Message to Ethiopia
1 Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia.
1 Alas, sails of a land of ships beyond the rivers of Aithiopia. | 1 Alas, sails of a land of ships beyond the rivers of Aithiopia. |
2 That sends ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes on the waters, saying, Go, you swift messengers, to a nation scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hereto; a nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled!

2 The one who sends hostages by sea and papyrus letters on the water! For swift messengers will go to a high nation, and a foreign and difficult people; who is beyond it? It is a nation without hope and trampled down. Now the rivers of the land | 2 The one who sends hostages by sea and papyrus letters on the water! 3 All you inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, see, when he lifts up an ensign on the mountains; and when he blows a trumpet, hear.
3 will all be like an inhabited country; their country will be inhabited as if a signal were raised up from a mountain, it will be heard like the sound of a trumpet, | 3 will all be like an inhabited country; their country will be inhabited as if a signal were raised up from a mountain, it will be heard like the sound of a trumpet, |
4 For so Yahweh said to me, I will take my rest, and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat on herbs, and like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.
4 because thus the Lord said to me. There will be safety in my city like the light of noontime heat, and it will be like a cloud of dew in the day of harvest. | 4 because thus the Lord said to me. There will be safety in my city like the light of noontime heat, and it will be like a cloud of dew in the day of harvest. |
5 For before the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks, and take away and cut down the branches.
5 Before the harvest, when the blossom has been finished and the unripe grape blossoms a grape-bearing blossom, then he will take away the small clusters with pruning knives and take away the small branches and cut them off; | 5 Before the harvest, when the blossom has been finished and the unripe grape blossoms a grape-bearing blossom, then he will take away the small clusters with pruning knives and take away the small branches and cut them off; |
6 They shall be left together to the fowls of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth; and the fowls shall summer on them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter on them.

7 In that time shall the present be brought to Yahweh of armies of a people scattered and peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hereto; a nation meted out and trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have spoiled, to the place of the name of Yahweh of armies, the mount Zion.

7 At that time gifts will be brought to the Lord Sabaōth from a people afflicted and plucked and from a great people from now until eternal time; a nation having confidence and trodden down, which is in a part of a river of its country, to the place where the name of the Lord Sabaōth is, which is called Mount Siōn, | 7 At that time gifts will be brought to the Lord Sabaōth from a people afflicted and plucked and from a great people from now until eternal time; a nation having confidence and trodden down, which is in a part of a river of its country, to the place where the name of the Lord Sabaōth is, which is called Mount Siōn, |
