1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.

The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

3 The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the sons of Israēl, says Yahweh of armies.

3 And no longer will it be strong enough for Ephraim to escape to, and no longer will there be a kingdom in Damascus, and the rest of the Syrians will perish, for you are not better than the sons of Israēl and their glory. The Lord Sabaoth says this. | 3 And no longer will it be strong enough for Ephraim to escape to, and no longer will there be a kingdom in Damascus, and the rest of the Syrians will perish, for you are not better than the sons of Israēl and their glory. The Lord Sabaoth says this. |
4 And in that day it will happen, that the glory of Jacōb shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean.
4 On that day, there will be an abandonment of the glory of Jakōb, and the riches of his glory will be shaken. | 4 On that day, there will be an abandonment of the glory of Jakōb, and the riches of his glory will be shaken. |
5 And it shall be as when the harvestman gathers the grain, and reaps the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he who gathers ears in the valley of Rephaim.
5 And it shall be as if someone were to gather the standing crop and reap the seed of the heads of grain, and it shall be as if someone were to gather a head of grain in a solid valley; | 5 And it shall be as if someone were to gather the standing crop and reap the seed of the heads of grain, and it shall be as if someone were to gather a head of grain in a solid valley; |
6 Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches of it, says Yahweh Elohim of Israēl.
6 and as if a stalk should be left in it, or like berries of an olive tree— two or three on the topmost height, or four or five left on its branches. This is what the Lord God of Israēl says. | 6 and as if a stalk should be left in it, or like berries of an olive tree— two or three on the topmost height, or four or five left on its branches. This is what the Lord God of Israēl says. |
7 At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israēl.
7 On that day a man will have confidence in the one who made him, and his eyes will look to the Holy One of Israēl, | 7 On that day a man will have confidence in the one who made him, and his eyes will look to the Holy One of Israēl, |
8 And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect what his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.
8 and they won’t trust in the altars nor in the works of their hands, which their own fingers have made, and they won’t look at their trees nor at their abominations. | 8 and they won’t trust in the altars nor in the works of their hands, which their own fingers have made, and they won’t look at their trees nor at their abominations. |
9 In that day shall his strong cities be as a forsaken bough, and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the sons of Israēl; and there shall be desolation.
9 On that day your cities will be abandoned, just as the Amorrites and the Evaites abandoned them before the sons of Israēl, and they will be desolate. | 9 On that day your cities will be abandoned, just as the Amorrites and the Evaites abandoned them before the sons of Israēl, and they will be desolate. |
10 Because you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and haven’t been mindful of the rock of your strength, therefore you shall plant pleasant plants, and shall set it with strange slips.

10 Because you have abandoned God your Saviour and have not remembered the Lord your helper, therefore you will plant an unbelieving plant and an unbelieving seed. | 10 Because you have abandoned God your Saviour and have not remembered the Lord your helper, therefore you will plant an unbelieving plant and an unbelieving seed. |
11 In the day you shall make your plant to grow, and in the morning you shall make your seed to flourish; but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.
11 But on the day that you plant them, you will be misled, and if you sow in the morning, it will flourish for a harvest in whatever day you take possession, and like a man’s father you will take possession of it for your sons. | 11 But on the day that you plant them, you will be misled, and if you sow in the morning, it will flourish for a harvest in whatever day you take possession, and like a man’s father you will take possession of it for your sons. |
12 Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!
12 Alas, a multitude of many nations! Like a surging sea, so will you be troubled, and the back of many nations will roar like water. | 12 Alas, a multitude of many nations! Like a surging sea, so will you be troubled, and the back of many nations will roar like water. |
13
The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters; but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
13 Many nations are like much water, as when much water violently rushes down. And he will curse him and pursue him far away, like the dust of chaff when they winnow before the wind and like a storm carrying whirlwind dust. | 13 Many nations are like much water, as when much water violently rushes down. And he will curse him and pursue him far away, like the dust of chaff when they winnow before the wind and like a storm carrying whirlwind dust. |
14 And behold at evening trouble; and before the morning he is not. This is the portion of those who spoil us, and the lot of those who rob us.
