Prophecy of Moab’s Devastation
1 Send the lamb to the ruler of the land from Sela to the wilderness, to the mount of the daughter of Zion.
1
I will send as it were reptiles on the land.
Isn’t the mountain Siōn a deserted rock? |
1
I will send as it were reptiles on the land.
Isn’t the mountain of the daughter of Siōn a deserted rock? |
2 For it shall be, that, as a wandering bird cast out of the nest, so the daughters of Moab shall be at the fords of Arnon.

2 For you will be like a young bird taken away from a bird that is flying, Oh daughter of Mōab! And then, Oh Arnōn, | 2 For you will be like a young bird taken away from a bird that is flying, Oh daughter of Mōab! And then, Oh Arnōn, more |
3 Take counsel, execute judgment; make your shadow as the night in the midst of the noonday; hide the outcasts; don’t betray him who escapes.
3 take more advice, and make a shelter for her for mourning for all time. They flee in darkness at noon; they were astonished; don’t be taken away. | 3 take advice, and make a shelter for her for mourning for all time. They flee in darkness at noon; they were astonished; don’t be taken away. |
4
Let my outcasts dwell with you, Moab; be a covert to them from the face of the spoiler; for the extortioner is at an end, the spoiler ceases, the oppressors are consumed out of the land.
4 The fugitives of Mōab will dwell with you; they will be a shelter to you from before a pursuer, because your alliance has been taken away and the ruler who trampled on the land has perished. | 4 The fugitives of Mōab will dwell with you; they will be a shelter to you from before a pursuer, because your alliance has been taken away and the ruler who trampled on the land has perished. |
5 And in mercy shall the throne be established; and he shall sit on it in truth in the tent of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness.
5 And a throne shall be restored with mercy, and he shall sit on it with truth in David’s tent, judging and seeking justice and speedy righteousness. | 5 And a throne shall be restored with mercy, and he shall sit on it with truth in David’s tent, judging and seeking justice and speedy righteousness. |
6 We have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud: even of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his wrath; but his lies shall not be so.

τὴν

τὴν
τὴν
6 We have heard of the pride of Mōab; he is very proud; you have removed his arrogance. Your divination is not thus; | 6 We have heard of the pride of Mōab; he is very proud; you have removed his arrogance. Your divination is not thus, not thus |
7 Therefore shall Moab howl for Moab, everyone shall howl; for the foundations of Kir-hareseth you shall mourn; surely they are stricken.
7 not thus; Mōab shall howl, for in Mōab all shall howl. You will take care of those who dwell in Deseth, and you won’t be humiliated. | 7 Mōab shall howl, for in Mōab all shall howl. You will take care of those who dwell in Seth, and you won’t be humiliated. |
8 For the fields of Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah: the lords of the heathen have broken down the principal plants of it, they are come even to Jazer, they wandered through the wilderness: her branches are stretched out, they are gone over the sea.
8 The plains of Esebōn will mourn, the vine of Sebama. While you swallow up the nations, trample down her vines as far as Jazēr. You won’t come together; you won’t wander in the wilderness; those who were sent have been forsaken, for they passed through the wilderness. | 8 The plains of Esebōn will mourn, the vine of Sebama. While you swallow up the nations, trample down her vines as far as Jazēr. You won’t come together; you won’t wander in the wilderness; those who were sent have been forsaken, for they passed through the wilderness. |
9 Therefore I will bewail with the weeping of Jazer the vine of Sibmah: I will water you with my tears, Oh Heshbon, and Elealeh; for the shouting for your summer fruits and for your harvest is fallen.
9 Therefore I will weep as with the weeping of Jazēr for the vine of Sebama. He has cut down your trees, Oh Esebōn and Elealē, because I will trample down your harvest and vintage, and all things will fall. | 9 Therefore I will weep as with the weeping of Jazēr for the vine of Sebama. He has cut down your trees, Oh Esebōn and Elealē, because I will trample down your harvest and vintage, and all things will fall. |
10 And gladness is taken away, and joy out of the plentiful field; and in the vineyards there shall be no singing, neither shall there be shouting: those who tread grapes shall tread out no wine in their presses; I have made their vintage shouting to cease.
10 And gladness and joy will be taken away out of your vineyards, and they won’t rejoice in your vineyards, and they won’t tread out wine in the vats, for the vintage has ceased. | 10 And gladness and joy will be taken away out of your vineyards, and they won’t rejoice in your vineyards, and they won’t tread out wine in the vats, for the vintage has ceased. |
11 Therefore my bowels shall sound like a harp for Moab, and my inward parts for Kir-haresh.
11 Therefore my belly will sound like a kithara on Mōab, and my insides will be like a wall that you have renewed. | 11 Therefore my belly will sound like a kithara on Mōab, and my insides will be like a wall that you have renewed. |
12 And it will happen, when it is seen that Moab is weary on the high place, that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray; but he shall not prevail.
12 And it will be for your humiliation, because Mōab has grown weary at the altars, and he will enter into her handcrafted objects in order to pray but it won’t be able to deliver him. | 12 And it will be for your humiliation, because Mōab has grown weary at the altars, and he will enter into her handcrafted objects in order to pray but it won’t be able to deliver him. |
13 This is the word that Yahweh has spoken concerning Moab since that time.
13 This was the word that the Lord spoke against Mōab when he also spoke. | 13 This was the word that the Lord spoke against Mōab when he also spoke. |
14 But now Yahweh has spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of a hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be contemned, with all that great multitude; and the remnant shall be very small and feeble.
14 And now I say, In three years of the years of a hired worker, the glory of Mōab will be dishonoured with all its great riches, and very few will be left and no honour. | 14 And now I say, In three years of the years of a hired worker, the glory of Mōab will be dishonoured with all its great riches, and very few will be left and no honour. |
