Shishak of Egypt Invades Judah

1 And it came to be, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of Yahweh, and all Israēl with him.

1 And it happened when the kingdom of Roboam was established, and when he had grown strong, that he forsook the commandments of the Lord, and all Israēl with him. 1 And it happened when the kingdom of Roboam was established, and when he had grown strong, that he forsook the commandments of the Lord, and all Israēl with him.

2 And it came to be, that in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had transgressed against Yahweh,

2 And it happened in the fifth year of the reign of Roboam, Susakim king of Egypt came up against Jerousalēm, because they had sinned against the Lord, 2 And it happened in the fifth year of the reign of Roboam, Susakim king of Egypt came up against Jerousalēm, because they had sinned against the Lord,

3 With 1200 chariots, and 60,000 horsemen; and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt; the Lubims, the Sukkiims, and the Ethiopians.

3 with 1200 chariots, and 60,000 horses; and there was no number of the multitude that came with him from Egypt; Libyans, Trogodytes, and Ethiopians. 3 with 1200 chariots, and 60,000 horses; and there was no number of the multitude that came with him from Egypt; Libyans, Trogodytes, and Ethiopians.

4 And he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah, and came to Jerusalem.

4 And they obtained possession of the strong cities, which were in Jouda, and came to Jerousalēm. 4 And they obtained possession of the strong cities, which were in Jouda, and came to Jerousalēm.

5 Then came Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, who were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, Thus says Yahweh, You have forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak.

5 And Samaias the prophet came to Roboam, and to the princes of Jouda who were gathered to Jerousalēm for fear of Susakim, and said to them, Thus said the Lord, You have left me, and I will leave you in the hand of Susakim. 5 And Samaias the prophet came to Roboam, and to the princes of Jouda who were gathered to Jerousalēm for fear of Susakim, and said to them, Thus said the Lord, You have left me, and I will leave you in the hand of Susakim.

6 Whereupon the princes of Israēl and the king humbled themselves; and they said, Yahweh is righteous.

6 And the elders of Israēl and the king were ashamed, and said, The Lord is righteous. 6 And the elders of Israēl and the king were ashamed, and said, The Lord is righteous.

7 And when Yahweh saw that they humbled themselves, the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; therefore I won’t destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance; and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.

7 And when the Lord saw that they repented, then came the word of the Lord to Samaias, saying, They have repented; I won’t destroy them, but I will set them in safety for a little while, and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerousalēm. 7 And when the Lord saw that they repented, then came the word of the Lord to Samaias, saying, They have repented; I won’t destroy them, but I will set them in safety for a little while, and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerousalēm.

8 Nevertheless they shall be his servants; that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.

8 Nevertheless they shall be servants, and know my service, and the service of the kings of the earth. 8 Nevertheless they shall be servants, and know my service, and the service of the kings of the earth.

Plunder Impoverishes Judah

9 So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of Yahweh, and the treasures of the king’s house; he took all: he carried away also the shields of gold which Solomon had made.

9 So Susakim king of Egypt went up against Jerousalēm, and took the treasures that were in the house of the Lord, and the treasures that were in the king’s house: he took all; and he took the golden shields which Salōmōn had made. 9 So Susakim king of Egypt went up against Jerousalēm, and took the treasures that were in the house of the Lord, and the treasures that were in the king’s house: he took all; and he took the golden shields which Salōmōn had made.

10 Instead of which king Rehoboam made shields of bronze, and committed them to the hands of the chief of the guard, that kept the entrance of the king’s house.

10 And king Roboam made copper-alloy shields instead of them. And Susakim set over him captains of footmen, as keepers of the gate of the king. 10 And king Roboam made copper-alloy shields instead of them. And Susakim set over him captains of footmen, as keepers of the gate of the king.

11 And when the king entered into the house of Yahweh, the guard came and fetched them, and brought them again into the guard chamber.

11 And it happened, when the king went into the house of the Lord, the guards and the footmen went in, and they who returned to meet the footmen. 11 And it happened, when the king went into the house of the Lord, the guards and the footmen went in, and they who returned to meet the footmen.

12 And when he humbled himself, the wrath of Yahweh turned from him that he would not destroy him altogether; and also in Judah things went well.

12 And when he repented, the anger of the Lord turned from him, and didn’t destroy him utterly; for there were good things in Jouda. 12 And when he repented, the anger of the Lord turned from him, and didn’t destroy him utterly; for there were good things in Jouda.

13 So king Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned; for Rehoboam was 41 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem, the city which Yahweh had chosen out of all the tribes of Israēl, to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess.

13 So king Roboam strengthened himself in Jerousalēm, and reigned; and Roboam was 40 and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 17 years in Jerousalēm, in the city which the Lord chose out of all the tribes of the sons of Israēl to call his name there; and his mother’s name was Noomma the Ammanitess.

14 And he did evil, because he didn’t prepar his heart to seek Yahweh.

14 And he did evil, for he didn’t direct his heart to seek the Lord. 14 And he did evil, for he didn’t direct his heart to seek the Lord.

15 Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.

15 καὶ λόγοι Ῥοβοὰμ οἱ πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ ἔσχατοι οὐκ ἰδοὺ γεγραμμένοι ἐν τοῖς λόγοις Σαμαίᾳ τοῦ προφήτου καὶ Ἀδδὼ τοῦ ὁρῶντος καὶ πράξεις αὐτοῦ;
15 καὶ λόγοι Ῥοβοὰμ οἱ πρῶτοι καὶ ἔσχατοι οὐκ ἰδοὺ γεγραμμένοι ἐν τοῖς λόγοις Σαμαία τοῦ προφήτου καὶ Ἀδδὼ τοῦ ὁρῶντος καὶ πράξεις αὐτοῦ;
15 And the acts of Roboam, the first and the last, behold, are they not written in the book of Samaia the prophet, and Addo the seer, with his achievements. 15 And the acts of Roboam, the first and the last, behold, are they not written in the book of Samaia the prophet, and Addo the seer, with his achievements.

16 And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David; and Abijah his son reigned in his stead.

16 And Roboam made war with Jeroboam all his days. And Roboam died with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David; and Abia his son reigned in his stead. 16 And Roboam made war with Jeroboam all his days. And Roboam died with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David; and Abia his son reigned in his stead.
