The Response to God’s Rebuke

1 Come, and let’s return to Yahweh; for he has torn, and he will heal us; he has smitten, and he will bind us up.

1 “Let us go and return to our Lord God, because it is he who has torn away, and he will heal us; he will strike, and he will bandage us. 1 “Let us go and return to our Lord God, because it is he who has torn away, and he will heal us; he will strike, and he will bandage us.

2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.

2 After two days he will restore us to health; on the third day we will rise up and live before him; 2 After two days he will restore us to health; on the third day we will rise up and live before him

3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know Yahweh: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come to us as the rain, as the latter and former rain to the earth.

3 and we will know. We will pursue to know the Lord; we will find him ready as dawn, and he will come to us like the early and the latter rain to the land.” 3 and we will know. We should pursue to know the Lord; we will find him ready as dawn, and he will come to us like the early and the latter rain to the land.”

4 Oh Ephraim, what shall I do to you? Oh Judah, what shall I do to you? For your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goes away.

4 τί σοί ποιήσω, Ἐφραίμ;
τί σοί ποιήσω, Ἰούδα;
4 τί σοι ποιήσω Ἐφραίμ;
τί σοι ποιήσω Ἰούδα;
4 What shall I do with you, Oh Ephraim? What shall I do with you, Oh Joudas? Your mercy is like a morning cloud and like morning dew going away. 4 What shall I do with you, Oh Ephraim? What shall I do with you, Oh Joudas? Your mercy is like a morning cloud and like morning dew going away.

5 Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth; and your judgments are as the light that goes forth.

5 Therefore I cut off your prophets; I killed them by the words of my mouth, and my judgment will go forth as light. 5 Therefore I cut off your prophets; I killed them by the words of my mouth, and my judgment will go forth as light.

6 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

6 Because I want mercy and not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than whole burnt offerings. 6 Because I want mercy and not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than whole burnt offerings.

7 But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.

7 But they are like a man transgressing a covenant; there he despised me. 7 But they are like a man transgressing a covenant; there he despised me.

8 Gilead is a city of those who work iniquity, and is polluted with blood.

8 Galaad is a city working worthless things, agitating water, 8 Galaad is a city working worthless things, agitating water,

9 And as troops of robbers wait for a man, so the company of priests murder in the way by consent; for they commit lewdness.

9 And your strength is that of a man, a pirate; priests have hidden the way of the Lord; they have murdered Sikima, because they did lawlessness. 9 And your strength is that of a man, a pirate; priests have hidden the way; they have murdered Sikima, because they did lawlessness.

10 I have seen a horrible thing in the house of Israēl: there is the prostitution of Ephraim, Israēl is defiled.

10 In the house of Israēl I saw a horrible thing: Ephraim’s prostitution there; Israēl has been defiled, and Joudas. 10 In the house of Israēl I saw a horrible thing: Ephraim’s prostitution there; Israēl has been defiled, and Joudas.

11 Also, Oh Judah, he has set a harvest for you, when I returned the captivity of my people.

11 Begin to reap for yourself when I return the captivity of my people, 11 Begin to reap for yourself when I return the captivity of my people, when I heal Israēl.
