1 Now the Philistines fought against Israēl; and the men of Israēl fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

וּפְלִשְׁתִּים נִלְחֲמוּ בְיִשְׂרָאֵל וַיָּנָס אִישׁ ־ יִשְׂרָאֵל מִפְּנֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים וַיִּפְּלוּ חֲלָלִים בְּהַר גִּלְבֹּעַ׃

2 And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.

וַיַּדְבְּקוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים אַחֲרֵי שָׁאוּל וְאַחֲרֵי בָנָיו וַיַּכּוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים אֶת ־ יֹונָתָן וְאֶת ־ אֲבִינָדָב וְאֶת ־ מַלְכִּי ־ שׁוּעַ בְּנֵי שָׁאוּל׃

וַתִּכְבַּד הַמִּלְחָמָה עַל ־ שָׁאוּל וַיִּמְצָאֻהוּ הַמֹּורִים בַּקָּשֶׁת וַיָּחֶל מִן ־ הַיֹּורִים׃

4 Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was very afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell on it.

4 καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ τῷ αἴροντι τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ σπάσαι τὴν ῥομφαίαν σου καὶ ἐκκέντησόν με ἐν αὐτῇ, μὴ ἔλθωσιν οἱ ἀπερίτμητοι οὗτοι καὶ ἐμπαίξωσίν μοι. καὶ οὐκ ἐβούλετο ὁ αἴρων τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἐφοβεῖτο σφόδρα· καὶ ἔλαβεν Σαοὺλ τὴν ῥομφαίαν καὶ ἐπέπεσεν ἐπ’ αὐτήν.	4 καὶ εἶπε Σαοὺλ τῷ αἴροντι τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ· σπάσαι τὴν ῥομφαίαν σου καὶ ἐκκέντησόν με ἐν αὐτῇ, μὴ ἔλθωσιν οἱ ἀπερίτμητοι οὗτοι καὶ ἐμπαίξωσί μοι. καὶ οὐκ ἐβούλετο ὁ αἴρων τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἐφοβεῖτο σφόδρα· καὶ ἔλαβε Σαοὺλ τὴν ῥομφαίαν καὶ ἐπέπεσεν ἐπ’ αὐτήν.

7 And when all the men of Israēl who were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, then they forsook their cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

9 And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines around, to carry tidings to their idols, and to the people.

9 καὶ ἐξέδυσαν αὐτὸν καὶ ἔλαβον τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέστειλαν εἰς γῆν ἀλλοφύλων κύκλῳ τοῦ εὐαγγελίσασθαι τοῖς εἰδώλοις αὐτῶν καὶ τῷ λαῷ·	9 καὶ ἐξέδυσαν αὐτὸν καὶ ἔλαβον τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέστειλαν εἰς γῆν ἀλλοφύλων κύκλῳ τοῦ εὐαγγελίσασθαι τοῖς εἰδώλοις αὐτῶν καὶ τῷ λαῷ·

11 And when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

12 They arose, all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

12 καὶ ἠγέρθησαν ἐκ Γαλαὰδ πᾶς ἀνὴρ δυνατὸς καὶ ἔλαβον τὸ σῶμα Σαοὺλ καὶ τὸ σῶμα τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤνεγκαν αὐτὰ εἰς Ἰαβὶς καὶ ἔθαψαν τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτῶν ὑπὸ τὴν δρῦν ἐν Ἰαβὶς καὶ ἐνήστευσαν ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας.	12 καὶ ἠγέρθησαν ἐκ Γαλαὰδ πᾶς ἀνὴρ δυνατὸς καὶ ἔλαβον τὸ σῶμα Σαοὺλ καὶ τὸ σῶμα τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤνεγκαν αὐτὰ εἰς Ἰαβὶς καὶ ἔθαψαν τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτῶν ὑπὸ τὴν δρῦν ἐν Ἰαβὶς καὶ ἐνήστευσαν ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας.

13 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against Yahweh, even against the word of Yahweh, which he didn’t keep, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire of it;

13 καὶ ἀπέθανεν Σαοὺλ ἐν ταῖς ἀνομίαις αὐτοῦ, αἷς ἠνόμησεν τῷ κυρίῳ, κατὰ τὸν λόγον κυρίου, διότι οὐκ ἐφύλαξεν· ὅτι ἐπηρώτησεν Σαοὺλ ἐν τῷ ἐγγαστριμύθῳ τοῦ ζητῆσαι, καὶ ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ Σαμουὴλ ὁ προφήτης·	13 καὶ ἀπέθανε Σαοὺλ ἐν ταῖς ἀνομίαις αὐτοῦ, αἷς ἠνόμησε τῷ Θεῷ κατὰ τὸν λόγον Κυρίου, διότι οὐκ ἐφύλαξεν· ὅτι ἐπηρώτησε Σαοὺλ ἐν τῷ ἐγγαστριμύθῳ τοῦ ζητῆσαι, καὶ ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ Σαμουὴλ ὁ προφήτης·

14 And didn’t inquire of Yahweh; therefore he killed him, and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.
