The Philistines Mistrust David
1 Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek; and the Israēlites camped by a fountain which is in Jezreel.
1 And allophyles gathered all their armies at Aphek, and Israēl encamped in Aendōr which is in Jezrael. | 1 And allophyles gathered all their armies at Aphek, and Israēl encamped in Aendōr which is in Jezrael. |
2 And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands; but David and his men passed on in the rear guard with Achish.
2 And satraps of allophyles were passing on by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were passing on in the rear with Anchous, | 2 And satraps of allophyles were passing on by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were passing on in the rear with Anchous, |
3 Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israēl, which has been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell to me to this day?

3 and the satraps of the allophyles said, “Who are these who pass by?” And Anchous said to the commanders of the allophyles, “Is this not David, the slave of King Saoul of Israēl? He has been with us for days; this is the second year, and from the day he fell in with me I have found no fault in him and until this day.” | 3 and the satraps of the allophyles said, “Who are these who pass by?” And Anchous said to the commanders of the allophyles, “Is this not David, the slave of King Saoul of Israēl? 4 And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said to him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which you have appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an adversary to us; for with which should he reconcile himself to his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?

4 And the commanders of the allophyles were distressed by him and said to him, “Return the man to his place, where you have appointed him there, and don't let him go with us to the battle, and don't let him be a traitor against the camp; and by what means could this fellow reconcile himself to his master? Wouldn't it be with the heads of those men? | 4 And the commanders of the allophyles were distressed by him and said to him, “Return the man to his place, where you have appointed him there, and don't let him go with us to the battle, and don't let him be a traitor against the camp; and by what means could this fellow reconcile himself to his master? Wouldn't it be with the heads of those men? |
5 Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
5 Is this not David, for whom they began with dances, saying, ‘Saoul has killed among his thousands, and David among his ten thousands’?” | 5 Is this not David, for whom they began with dances, saying, ‘Saoul has killed among his thousands, and David among his ten thousands’?” |
6 Then Achish called David, and said to him, Surely, as Yahweh lives, you have been upright, and your going out and your coming in with me in the army is good in my sight; for I haven’t found evil in you since the day of your coming to me to this day: nevertheless the lords favour you not.
6 And Anchous called David and said to him, “The Lord lives, that you and your coming in and your going out with me in the camp are right and good in my eyes and that I have not found evil against you from the day you have come to me until the present day, but in the eyes of the satraps you are not good. | 6 And Anchous called David and said to him, “The Lord lives, that you and your coming in and your going out with me in the camp are right and good in my eyes and that I have not found evil against you from the day you have come to me until the present day, but in the eyes of the satraps you are not good. |
7 Therefore now return, and go in peace, that you displease not the lords of the Philistines.
7 And now return, and go in peace, and you shall not do evil in the eyes of the satraps of the allophyles.” | 7 And now return, and go in peace, and you shall not do evil in the eyes of the satraps of the allophyles.” |
8 And David said to Achish, But what have I done? And what have you found in your servant so long as I have been with you to this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?
8 And David said to Anchous, “What have I done to you, and what did you find in your slave from the day I was before you even until this day, that I shall not go to fight the enemies of my master the king?” | 8 And David said to Anchous, “What have I done to you, and what did you find in your slave from the day I was before you even until this day, that I shall not go to fight the enemies of my master the king?” |
9 And Achish answered and said to David, I know that you are good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.
9 And Anchous replied to David, “I know that you are good in my eyes, but the satraps of the allophyles say, ‘He shall not go up with us to battle.’ | 9 And Anchous replied to David, “I know that you are good in my eyes, but the satraps of the allophyles say, ‘He shall not go up with us to battle.’ |
10 Therefore now rise up early in the morning with your master’s servants that are come with you; and as soon as you be up early in the morning, and have light, depart.
10 And now arise early in the morning, you and the servants of your master who came with you, and go to the place, there where I appointed you, and don't place a pestilent thought in your heart, for you are good before me, and start early on the way, and let there be light on you, and go.” | 10 And now arise early in the morning, you and the servants of your master who came with you, and go to the place, there where I appointed you, and don't place a pestilent thought in your heart, for you are good before me, and start early on the way, and let there be light on you, and go.” |
11 So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
11 And David was early to depart, he and his men, and to guard the land of the allophyles, and the allophyles went up to fight against Israēl. | 11 And David was early to depart, he and his men, and to guard the land of the allophyles, and the allophyles went up to fight against Israēl. |
