I Samuel

1 And it happened in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israēl. And Achish said to David, Know you assuredly, that you shall go out with me to battle, you and your men.

5 And when Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.

6 And when Saul inquired of Yahweh, Yahweh didn’t answer him, neither by dreams nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

7 Then said Saul to his servants, Seek me a woman that has a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that has a familiar spirit at Endor.

7 καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ ζητήσατέ μοι γυναῖκα ἐγγαστρίμυθον, καὶ πορεύσομαι πρὸς αὐτὴν καὶ ζητήσω ἐν αὐτῇ· καὶ εἶπαν οἱ παῖδες αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτόν ἰδοὺ γυνὴ ἐγγαστρίμυθος ἐν Ἀενδώρ.	7 καὶ εἶπε Σαοὺλ τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ· ζητήσατέ μοι γυναῖκα ἐγγαστρίμυθον, καὶ πορεύσομαι πρὸς αὐτὴν καὶ ζητήσω ἐν αὐτῇ· καὶ εἶπαν οἱ παῖδες αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτόν· ἰδοὺ γυνὴ ἐγγαστρίμυθος ἐν Ἀενδώρ.

8 And Saul disguised himself, and put on other clothing, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night; and he said, please, divine to me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name to you.

10 And Saul swore to her by Yahweh, saying, As Yahweh lives, there shall no punishment happen to you for this thing.

11 Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up to you? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.

12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, Why have you deceived me? for you are Saul.

13 And the king said to her, Don’t be afraid; for what saw you? And the woman said to Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.

14 And he said to her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man comes up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.

15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why have you disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answers me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams; therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do.

15 And Samouēl said, “Why did you disturb me that I ascend?” And Saoul said, “I am greatly distressed, and the allophyles are warring against me, and God has withdrawn from me and no longer listens to me, either by the hand of prophets or by dreams, and now I have summoned you to know what I should do.”	15 And Samouēl said, “Why did you disturb me that I ascend?” And Saoul said, “I am greatly distressed, and the allophyles are warring against me, and God has withdrawn from me and no longer listens to me, either by the hand of prophets or by dreams, and now I have summoned you to know what I should do.”

16 Then said Samuel, Why then do you ask of me, seeing Yahweh is departed from you, and is become your enemy?

17 And Yahweh has done to him, as he spoke by me; for Yahweh has rent the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbour, even to David.

17 καὶ πεποίηκεν κύριός σοί καθὼς ἐλάλησεν ἐν χειρί μου, καὶ διαρρήξει κύριος τὴν βασιλείαν σου ἐκ χειρός σου καὶ δώσει αὐτὴν τῷ πλησίον σου τῷ Δαυίδ.	17 καὶ πεποίηκε Κύριός σοι καθὼς ἐλάλησε Κύριος ἐν χειρί μου, καὶ διαρρήξει Κύριος τὴν βασιλείαν σου ἐκ χειρός σου καὶ δώσει αὐτὴν τῷ πλησίον σου τῷ Δαυίδ.

18 Because you didn’t obey the voice of Yahweh, nor executed his fierce wrath on Amalēk, therefore has Yahweh done this thing to you this day.

18 διότι οὐκ ἤκουσας φωνῆς κυρίου καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησας θυμὸν ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ ἐν Ἀμαλήκ, διὰ τοῦτο τὸ ῥῆμα ἐποίησεν κύριός σοί τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ.	18 διότι οὐκ ἤκουσας φωνῆς Κυρίου καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησας θυμὸν ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ ἐν Ἀμαλήκ, διὰ τοῦτο τὸ ῥῆμα ἐποίησε Κύριός σοι ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ.

19 Moreover Yahweh will also deliver Israēl with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow you shall and your sons be with me: Yahweh also shall deliver the army of Israēl into the hand of the Philistines.

19 καὶ παραδώσει κύριος τὸν Ἰσραὴλ μετὰ σοῦ εἰς χεῖρας ἀλλοφύλων, καὶ αὔριον σὺ καὶ οἱ υἱοί σου μετὰ σοῦ πεσοῦνται, καὶ τὴν παρεμβολὴν Ἰσραὴλ δώσει κύριος εἰς χεῖρας ἀλλοφύλων.	19 καὶ παραδώσει Κύριος τὸν Ἰσραὴλ μετὰ σοῦ εἰς χεῖρας ἀλλοφύλων, καὶ αὔριον σὺ καὶ οἱ υἱοί σου μετὰ σοῦ πεσοῦνται, καὶ τὴν παρεμβολὴν Ἰσραὴλ δώσει Κύριος εἰς χεῖρας ἀλλοφύλων.

20 Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel; and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.

21 And the woman came to Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said to him, Behold, your handmaid has obeyed your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have listened to your words which you spoke to me.
