Saul and the Spirit Medium
1 And it happened in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israēl. And Achish said to David, Know you assuredly, that you shall go out with me to battle, you and your men.
1 And it happened in those days that allophyles were gathering in their camps to go out to fight with Israēl, and Anchous said to David, “While knowing, you shall know that you will go out with me to battle, you and your men.” | 1 And it happened in those days that allophyles were gathering in their camps to go out to fight with Israēl, and Anchous said to David, “While knowing, you shall know that you will go out with me to battle, you and your men.” |
2 And David said to Achish, Surely you shall know what your servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make you keeper of my head forever.
2 And David said to Anchous, “Thus now you shall know what your slave will do,” and Anchous said to David, “So I will appoint you chief of the bodyguard all the days.” | 2 And David said to Anchous, “Thus now you shall know what your slave will do,” and Anchous said to David, “So I will appoint you chief of the bodyguard all the days.” |
3 Now Samuel was dead, and all Israēl had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those who had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.

3 And Samouēl died, and all Israēl mourned for him and buried him in Armathaim in his city. And Saoul removed the spirit-mediums and those in the know from the land. | 3 And Samouēl died, and all Israēl mourned for him and buried him in Armathaim in his city. And Saoul removed the spirit-mediums and those in the know from the land. |
4 And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and camped in Shunem; and Saul gathered all Israēl together, and they camped in Gilboa.
4 And the allophyles assembled and came and encamped at Soman, and Saoul gathered every man of Israēl, and they encamped at Gelboue. | 4 And the allophyles assembled and came and encamped at Soman, and Saoul gathered every man of Israēl, and they encamped at Gelboue. |
5 And when Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.
5 And Saoul saw the camp of the allophyles and was afraid, and his heart was greatly dismayed. | 5 And Saoul saw the camp of the allophyles and was afraid, and his heart was greatly dismayed. |
6 And when Saul inquired of Yahweh, Yahweh didn’t answer him, neither by dreams nor by Urim, nor by prophets.
6 And Saoul inquired through the Lord, and the Lord did not answer him by dreams and by clarity and by prophets. | 6 And Saoul inquired through the Lord, and the Lord did not answer him by dreams and by clarity and by prophets. |
7 Then said Saul to his servants, Seek me a woman that has a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that has a familiar spirit at Endor.
7 And Saoul said to his servants, “Seek out for me a spirit-medium woman, and I will go to her and seek by her,” and his servants said to him, “Look! there is a spirit-medium woman at Aendōr.” | 7 And Saoul said to his servants, “Seek out for me a spirit-medium woman, and I will go to her and seek by her,” and his servants said to him, “Look! there is a spirit-medium woman at Aendōr.” |
8 And Saul disguised himself, and put on other clothing, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night; and he said, please, divine to me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name to you.
8 And Saoul disguised himself and put on other clothes and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night, and he said to her, “Please seek divinations for me by a spirit-medium, and bring up for me whomever I say to you.” | 8 And Saoul disguised himself and put on other clothes and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night, and he said to her, “Please seek divinations for me by a spirit-medium, and bring up for me whomever I say to you.” |
9 And the woman said to him, Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those who have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land; therefore then lay you a snare for my life, to cause me to die?
9 And the woman said to him, “Look please! you know what Saoul did, how he utterly destroyed the spirit-mediums and those in the know from the land, and why are you ensnaring my life to put it to death?” | 9 And the woman said to him, “Look please! you know what Saoul did, how he utterly destroyed the spirit-mediums and those in the know from the land, and why are you ensnaring my life to put it to death?” |
10 And Saul swore to her by Yahweh, saying, As Yahweh lives, there shall no punishment happen to you for this thing.
10 And Saoul swore to her, saying, “The Lord lives, no injustice shall meet you in this matter.” | 10 And Saoul swore to her, saying, “The Lord lives, no injustice shall meet you in this matter.” |
11 Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up to you? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.

11 And the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” And he said, “Bring up Samouēl for me.” | 11 And the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” And he said, “Bring up Samouēl for me.” |
12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, Why have you deceived me? for you are Saul.

12 And the woman saw Samouēl, and she called out with a loud voice, and the woman said to Saoul, “Why did you deceive me? And you are Saoul!” | 12 And the woman saw Samouēl, and she called out with a loud voice, and the woman said to Saoul, “Why did you deceive me? And you are Saoul!” |
13 And the king said to her, Don’t be afraid; for what saw you? And the woman said to Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.

13 And the king said to her, “Stop being afaid! Tell whom you have seen.” And she said to him, “I have seen gods coming up out of the ground.” | 13 And the king said to her, “Stop being afaid! Tell whom you have seen.” And she said to him, “I have seen gods coming up out of the ground.” |
14 And he said to her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man comes up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.
14
καὶ
τί

14 And he said to her, “What did you perceive?” And she said to him, “A man, standing up, coming up out of the ground, and he is wrapped in a double-cloak.” And Saoul knew that this was Samouēl, and he bowed with his face to the ground and did obeisance to him. | 14 And he said to her, “What did you perceive?” And she said to him, “A man, standing up, coming up out of the ground, and he is wrapped in a double-cloak.” And Saoul knew that this was Samouēl, and he bowed with his face to the ground and did obeisance to him. |
15 And Samuel said to Saul, Why have you disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answers me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams; therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do.
15
καὶ
ἵνα

μοι
15
καὶ

15 And Samouēl said, “Why did you disturb me that I ascend?” And Saoul said, “I am greatly distressed, and the allophyles are warring against me, and God has withdrawn from me and no longer listens to me, either by the hand of prophets or by dreams, and now I have summoned you to know what I should do.” | 15 And Samouēl said, “Why did you disturb me that I ascend?” And Saoul said, “I am greatly distressed, and the allophyles are warring against me, and God has withdrawn from me and no longer listens to me, either by the hand of prophets or by dreams, and now I have summoned you to know what I should do.” |
16 Then said Samuel, Why then do you ask of me, seeing Yahweh is departed from you, and is become your enemy?
16
καὶ
ἵνα
τί
16 And Samouēl said, “Why do you ask me? And the Lord has withdrawn from you and is with your neighbour, | 16 And Samouēl said, “Why do you ask me? And the Lord has withdrawn from you and is with your neighbour, |
17 And Yahweh has done to him, as he spoke by me; for Yahweh has rent the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbour, even to David.
17 and the Lord has done to you just as he spoke by my hand, and the Lord will tear your kingdom out of your hand and give it to your neighbour, to David. | 17 and the Lord has done to you just as he spoke by my hand, and the Lord will tear your kingdom out of your hand and give it to your neighbour, to David. |
18 Because you didn’t obey the voice of Yahweh, nor executed his fierce wrath on Amalēk, therefore has Yahweh done this thing to you this day.
18 Because you didn't hear the voice of the Lord and did not do his anger of wrath on Amalēk, therefore the Lord did this thing to you this day. | 18 Because you didn't hear the voice of the Lord and did not do his anger of wrath on Amalēk, therefore the Lord did this thing to you this day. |
19 Moreover Yahweh will also deliver Israēl with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow you shall and your sons be with me: Yahweh also shall deliver the army of Israēl into the hand of the Philistines.
19 And the Lord will hand over Israēl along with you into the hands of allophyles, and tomorrow you and your sons with you shall fall, and the Lord will give the camp of Israēl into the hands of allophyles.” | 19 And the Lord will hand over Israēl along with you into the hands of allophyles, and tomorrow you and your sons with you shall fall, and the Lord will give the camp of Israēl into the hands of allophyles.” |
20 Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel; and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.
20 And Saoul hurried, and as he stood, he fell on the ground and was filled with fear because of the words of Samouēl, and there was no more any strength in him, for he had eaten nothing the whole day and that whole night. | 20 And Saoul hurried, and as he stood, he fell on the ground and was filled with fear because of the words of Samouēl, and there was no more any strength in him, for he had eaten nothing the whole day and that whole night. |
21 And the woman came to Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said to him, Behold, your handmaid has obeyed your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have listened to your words which you spoke to me.
21 And the woman came to Saoul and saw that he hurried greatly and said to him, “Look! indeed your slave heard your voice, and I put my life in my hand and heard the words that you spoke to me, | 21 And the woman came to Saoul and saw that he hurried greatly and said to him, “Look! indeed your slave heard your voice, and I put my life in my hand and heard the words that you spoke to me, |
22 Now therefore, please, listen you also to the voice of your handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength, when you go on your way.
22 and now please listen to the voice of your slave, and I will place a bit of food before you, and eat, and there will be strength in you for you will go on the way.” | 22 and now please listen to the voice of your slave, and I will place a bit of food before you, and eat, and there will be strength in you for you will go on the way.” |
23 But he refused, and said, I won’t eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he listened to their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat on the bed.
23 And he didn't want to eat, and his servants and the woman kept urging him, and he listened to their voice and got up from the ground and sat on the bench. | 23 And he didn't want to eat, and his servants and the woman kept urging him, and he listened to their voice and got up from the ground and sat on the bench. |
24 And the woman had a fat calf in the house; and she hurried, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread of it.
24 And the woman had a pasture-fed heifer in the house, and she hurried and slaughtered it and took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened cakes | 24 And the woman had a pasture-fed heifer in the house, and she hurried and slaughtered it and took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened cakes |
25 And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they ate. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
