David’s Victory over the Amalēkites

1 And it happened, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalēkites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;

1 And it happened, when David and his men entered into Sekelak on the third day, that Amalēk had made a raid on the south and on Sekelak and had struck Sekelak and burned it with fire, 1 And it happened, when David and his men entered into Sekelak on the third day, that Amalēk had made a raid on the south and on Sekelak and had struck Sekelak and burned it with fire,

2 And had taken the women captives, who were in it: they killed not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.

2 and the women and all that was in it, from small up to great, they didn't put to death man or woman, but captured them and went on their way. 2 and the women and all that was in it, from small up to great, they didn't put to death man or woman, but captured them and went on their way.

3 So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.

3 And David came, and his men, to the city, and look! it had been burned with fire, but their wives and their sons and their daughters taken captive. 3 And David came, and his men, to the city, and look! it had been burned with fire, but their wives and their sons and their daughters taken captive.

4 Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.

4 And David raised, and his men, their voice, and they wept until they had no more strength left to them to weep. 4 And David raised, and his men, their voice, and they wept until they had no more strength left to them to weep.

5 And David’s two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

5 And both David’s wives were taken captive, Achinoom the Jezraēlite and Abigaia the wife of Nabal the Karmēlite. 5 And both David’s wives were taken captive, Achinoom the Jezraēlite and Abigaia the wife of Nabal the Karmēlite

6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters; but David encouraged himself in Yahweh his God.

6 And David was greatly distressed, for the people said to stone him, because the soul of all the people was in great pain each for his sons and for his daughters, and David was strengthened in the Lord, his God. 6 And David was greatly distressed, for the people said to stone him, because the soul of all the people was in great pain each for his sons and for his daughters, and David was strengthened in the Lord, his God.

7 And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, please, bring me here the ephod. And Abiathar brought to that place the ephod to David.

7 And David said to the priest, Abiathar son of Achimelech, “Bring the ephod.” 7 And David said to the priest, Abiathar son of Achimelech, “Bring the ephod.”

8 And David inquired at Yahweh, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue; for you shall surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.

8 καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν Δαυὶδ διὰ τοῦ κυρίου λέγων εἰ καταδιώξω ὀπίσω τοῦ γεδδουρ τούτου;
εἰ καταλήμψομαι αὐτούς;
8 καὶ ἐπηρώτησε Δαυὶδ διά τοῦ Κυρίου λέγων· εἰ καταδιώξω ὀπίσω τοῦ γεδδοὺρ τούτου, εἰ καταλήψομαι αὐτούς;
8 And David inquired by the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue after this gang? Shall I overtake them?” And he said to him, “Pursue, for while overtaking, you shall overtake, and while delivering, you shall deliver.” 8 And David inquired by the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue after this gang? Shall I overtake them?” And he said to him, “Pursue, for while overtaking, you shall overtake, and while delivering, you shall deliver.”

9 So David went, he and the 600 men who were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those who were left behind stayed.

9 And David went out, he and 600 men with him. And they came to the stream Bosor, and the remaining stayed. 9 And David went out, he and 600 men with him. And they came to the stream Bosor, and the remaining stayed.

10 But David pursued, he and 400 men; for 200 abode behind, which were so faint that they couldn’t go over the brook Besor.

10 And he pursued with 400 men, but 200 stayed behind, who stayed on the other side of the stream Bosor. 10 And he pursued with 400 men, but 200 stayed behind, who stayed on the other side of the stream Bosor.

11 And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he ate; and they made him drink water;

11 And in a field they find an Aigyptian man, and they take him and bring him to David in a field, and they give him bread, and he ate, and they gave him water to drink, 11 And in a field they find an Aigyptian man, and they take him and bring him to David in a field, and they give him bread, and he ate, and they gave him water to drink,

12 And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins; and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him; for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights.

12 and they give him a piece of fruitcake, and he ate, and his spirit revived in him, for he hadn't eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights. 12 and they give him a piece of fruitcake, and he ate, and his spirit revived in him, for he hadn't eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights.

13 And David said to him, To whom do you belong? And where are you from? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalēkite; and my master left me, because three days ago I fell sick.

13 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Δαυὶδ τίνος σὺ εἶ;
13 καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ Δαυίδ· τίνος σὺ εἶ καὶ πόθεν εἶ;
13 And David said to him, “Whose are you, and where are you from?” And the Aigyptian youth said, “I am a slave of an Amalēkite man, and my master left me behind because I became sick three days ago. 13 And David said to him, “Whose are you, and where are you from?” And the Aigyptian youth said, “I am a slave of an Amalēkite man, and my master left me behind because I became sick three days ago.

14 We made an invasion on the south of the Cherethites, and on the coast which belongs to Judah, and on the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.

14 And we had made a raid on the south of Cholthi and on the parts of Jouda and on the south of Cheloub, and we burned Sekelak with fire.” 14 And we had made a raid on the south of Cholthi and on the parts of Jouda and on the south of Cheloub, and we burned Sekelak with fire.”

15 And David said to him, Can you bring me down to this company? And he said, Swear to me by God, that you will neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring you down to this company.

15 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Δαυὶδ εἰ κατάξεις με ἐπὶ τὸ γεδδουρ τοῦτο;
15 καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ Δαυίδ· εἰ κατάξεις με ἐπὶ τὸ γεδδοὺρ τοῦτο;
15 And David said to him, “Will you take me down to this gang?” And he said, “Please swear to me by God that you will not put me to death and not hand me over into the hands of my master, and I will take you down to this gang.” 15 And David said to him, “Will you take me down to this gang?” And he said, “Please swear to me by God that you will not put me to death and not hand me over into the hands of my master, and I will take you down to this gang.”

16 And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad on all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.

16 And he took him down there, and look! they were scattered out over the surface of all the ground, eating and drinking and celebrating a feast with all the great spoils they took from the land of allophyles and from the land of Jouda. 16 And he took him down there, and look! they were scattered out over the surface of all the ground, eating and drinking and celebrating a feast with all the great spoils they took from the land of allophyles and from the land of Jouda.

17 And David smote them from the twilight even to the evening of the next day; and there didn’t escape a man of them, save 400 young men, which rode on camels, and fled.

17 And David came on them and struck them from morning star until afternoon and on the next day, and not a man of them escaped, except 400 youths, who had mounted on camels and fled. 17 And David came on them and struck them from morning star until afternoon and on the next day, and not a man of them escaped, except 400 youths, who had mounted on camels and fled.

18 And David recovered all that the Amalēkites had carried away; and David rescued his two wives.

18 And David recovered all that the Amalēkites took and rescued both his wives. 18 And David recovered all that the Amalēkites took and rescued both his wives.

19 And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor anything that they had taken to them: David recovered all.

19 And nothing was missing with them, from small up to great and from the spoils even up to sons and daughters and up to all the things that they took of theirs; David brought back all the things. 19 And nothing was missing with them, from small up to great and from the spoils even up to sons and daughters and up to all the things that they took of theirs; David brought back all the things.

20 And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drove before those other cattle, and said, This is David’s spoil.

20 And David took all the flocks and herds and led them away ahead of the spoils, and of those spoils it was being said, “These are David’s spoils.” 20 And David took all the flocks and herds and led them away ahead of the spoils, and of those spoils it was being said, “These are David’s spoils.”

The Spoils Are Divided

21 And David came to the 200 men, which were so faint that they couldn’t follow David, whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor; and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people who were with him; and when David came near to the people, he saluted them.

21 And David comes to the 200 men who had been too exhausted to go after David, and he had caused them to sit at the stream Bosor, and they went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him, and David drew near to the people, and they asked him the matters for peace. 21 And David comes to the 200 men who had been too exhausted to go after David, and he had caused them to sit at the stream Bosor, and they went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him, and David drew near to the people, and they asked him the matters for peace.

22 Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those who went with David, and said, Because they didn’t go with us, we won’t give them anything of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.

22 And every pestilent and bad man among the men, the warriors, who had gone with David answered and said, “Because they didn't pursue together with us, we will not give them any of the spoils that we have recovered, except let each take his wife and his children and leave.” 22 And every pestilent and bad man among the men, the warriors, who had gone with David answered and said, “Because they didn't pursue together with us, we will not give them any of the spoils that we have recovered, except let each take his wife and his children and leave.”

23 Then said David, You shall not do so, my brothers, with what Yahweh has given us, who has preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.

23 And David said, “You shall not do so after the Lord delivered them to us and guarded us, and the Lord delivered the gang that came against us into our hands. 23 And David said, “You shall not do so after the Lord delivered them to us and guarded us, and the Lord delivered the gang that came against us into our hands.

24 For who will listen to you in this matter? but as his part is that goes down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarries by the stuff: they shall part alike.

24 καὶ τίς ὑπακούσεται ὑμῶν τῶν λόγων τούτων;
24 καὶ τίς ἐπακούσεται ὑμῶν τῶν λόγων τούτων;
24 And who will listen to these your words? For they are not inferior to you; because according to the share of the one who goes down into the battle, so shall be the share of the one who stays by the baggage; according to this they shall be distributed.” 24 And who will listen to these your words? For they are not inferior to you; because according to the share of the one who goes down into the battle, so shall be the share of the one who stays by the baggage; according to this they shall be distributed.”

25 And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israēl to this day.

25 And it came to be from that day and beyond, that it was for an ordinance and for a statute for Israēl until today. 25 And it came to be from that day and beyond, that it was for an ordinance and for a statute for Israēl until today.

26 And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil to the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, Behold a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of Yahweh;

26 And David came to Sekelak and sent part of the spoils to the elders of Jouda and to his neighbours, saying, “Look! some of the spoils of the enemies of the Lord,” 26 And David came to Sekelak and sent part of the spoils to the elders of Jouda and to his neighbours, saying, “Look! some of the spoils of the enemies of the Lord,”

27 for those in Baithsour and those in Rhama of the south and those in Jeththor 27 for those in Baithsour and those in Rhama of the south and those in Jeththor

28 And to them who were in Aroer, and to them who were in Siphmoth, and to them who were in Eshtemoa,
