Temple Work Resumed

1 Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of Elohim of Israēl, even to them.

1 And Haggaius the prophet, and Zacharias the son of Addō, prophesied a prophesy to the Joudeans in Jouda and Hierousalēm in the name of the God of Israēl who was over them. 1 And Aggaius the prophet, and Zacharias the son of Addō, prophesied a prophesy to the Joudeans in Jouda and Hierousalēm in the name of the God of Israēl who was over them.

2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

2 Then Zorobabel the son of Salathiēl, and Jesous the son of Jōsedek rose up, and began to build the house of God who was in Hierousalēm; and with them were the prophets of God assisting them. 2 Then Zorobabel the son of Salathiēl, and Jesous the son of Jōsedek rose up, and began to build the house of God who was in Hierousalēm; and with them were the prophets of God assisting them.

3 At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus to them, Who has commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?

3 ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ ἦλθεν ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς Θανθαναὶ ἔπαρχος πέραν τοῦ ποταμοῦ καὶ Σαθαρβουζανὰ καὶ οἱ σύνδουλοι αὐτῶν καὶ τοῖα εἶπαν αὐτοῖς τίς ἔθηκεν ὑμῖν γνώμην τοῦ οἰκοδομῆσαι τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον καὶ τὴν χορηγίαν ταύτην καταρτίσασθαι; 3 ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ ἦλθεν ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς Θανθαναῒ ἔπαρχος πέραν τοῦ ποταμοῦ καὶ Σαθαρβουζαναῒ καὶ οἱ σύνδουλοι αὐτῶν καὶ τοιάδε εἶπαν αὐτοῖς· τίς ἔθηκεν ὑμῖν γνώμην τοῦ οἰκοδομῆσαι τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον καὶ τὴν χορηγίαν ταύτην καταρτίσασθαι;
3 At the same time there came on them Thanthanai, the governor on this side the river, and Satharbouzana, and their fellow-servants, and spoke thus to them, “Who has made a decision for you to build this house, and to provide this equipment?” 3 At the same time there came on them Thanthanai, the governor on this side the river, and Satharbouzana, and their fellow-servants, and spoke thus to them, “Who has made a decision for you to build this house, and to provide this equipment?”

4 Then said we to them after this manner, What are the names of the men who make this building?

4 τότε ταῦτα εἴποσαν αὐτοῖς τίνα ἐστὶν τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν ἀνδρῶν τῶν οἰκοδομούντων τὴν πόλιν ταύτην; 4 τότε ταῦτα εἴποσαν αὐτοῖς· τίνα ἐστὶ τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν ἀνδρῶν τῶν οἰκοδομούντων τὴν πόλιν ταύτην;
4 Thus they spoke these things to them, “What are the names of the men who are building this city?” 4 Thus they spoke these things to them, “What are the names of the men who are building this city?”

5 But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, that they couldn’t cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius; and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.

5 But the eyes of God were on the captivity of Jouda, and they didn’t force them to halt until the decision was brought to Dareius; and then this was sent to the tribute-gatherer. 5 But the eyes of God were on the captivity of Jouda, and they didn’t force them to halt until the decision was brought to Dareius; and then this was sent to the tribute-gatherer.

Adversaries Write to Darius

6 The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and his companions the Apharsachites, which were on this side the river, sent to Darius the king.

6 the explanation of a letter, which Thanthanai, the governor of the part on this side the river, and Satharbouzana, and their fellow-servants the Apharsachaeans who were on this side of the river, sent to king Dareius. 6 the explanation of a letter, which Thanthanai, the governor of the part on this side the river, and Satharbouzanai, and their fellow-servants the Apharsachaeans who were on this side of the river, sent to king Dareius.

7 They sent a letter to him, in which was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace.

7 They sent a report to him, and thus it was written in it: “To king Dareius, all peace. 7 They sent a report to him, and thus it was written in it: “To king Dareius, all peace.

8 Be it known to the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is built with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goes fast on, and prospers in their hands.

8 Let it be known to the king, that we went into the country of Joudea, to the house of the great God; and it is being built with select stones, and timbers are being laid in the walls, and that work is prosperous, and goes on well by their hands. 8 Let it be known to the king, that we went into the country of Joudea, to the house of the great God; and it is being built with select stones, and timbers are being laid in the walls, and that work is prosperous, and goes on well by their hands.

9 Then asked we those elders, and said to them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?

9 τότε ἠρωτήσαμεν τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους ἐκείνους καὶ οὕτως εἴπαμεν αὐτοῖς τίς ἔθηκεν ὑμῖν γνώμην τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον οἰκοδομῆσαι καὶ τὴν χορηγίαν ταύτην καταρτίσασθαι; 9 τότε ἠρωτήσαμεν τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους ἐκείνους, καὶ οὕτως εἴπαμεν αὐτοῖς· τίς ἔθηκεν ὑμῖν γνώμην τὸν οἶκον τοῦτον οἰκοδομῆσαι καὶ τὴν χορηγίαν ταύτην καταρτίσασθαι;
9 Then we asked those elders, and thus we said to them, ‛Who gave you the decision to build this house, and to supply this equipment?’ 9 Then we asked those elders, and thus we said to them, ‛Who gave you the decision to build this house, and to supply this equipment?’

10 We asked their names also, to certify you, that we might write the names of the men who were the chief of them.

10 And we asked them their names, to make them known to you, so as to record for you the names of the men who are their leaders. 10 And we asked them their names, to make them known to you, so as to record for you the names of the men who are their leaders.

11 And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israēl built and set up.

11 And they answered the matter to us, saying, ‛We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are building the house which was built many years before this, and a great king of Israēl built it, and established it. 11 And they answered the matter to us, saying, ‛We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are building the house which was built many years before this, and a great king of Israēl built it, and established it for them.

12 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

12 for them. But after that, our fathers angered the God of heaven, he gave them into the hands of Nabouchodonosor the king of Babylōn, the Chaldean, and he destroyed this house, and carried the people captive to Babylōn. 12 But after that, our fathers angered the God of heaven, he gave them into the hands of Nabouchodonosor the king of Babylōn, the Chaldean, and he destroyed this house, and carried the people captive to Babylōn.

13 But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God.

13 But in the first year of king Kyrus, Kyrus the king made a decision to have this house of God built. 13 But in the first year of king Kyrus, Kyrus the king made a decision to have this house of God built.

14 And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;

14 As for the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nabouchodonosor carried out from the house that was in Hierousalēm, and carried them away into the king’s temple, king Kyrus brought them out from the temple of the king, and gave them to Sasabasar the treasurer, who was over the treasury; 14 As for the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nabouchodonosor carried out from the house that was in Hierousalēm, and carried them away into the king’s temple, king Kyrus brought them out from the temple of the king, and gave them to Sabanasar the treasurer, who was over the treasury;

15 And said to him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be built in his place.

15 and said to him, “Take all the vessels, and go, put them in the house that is in Hierousalēm in their place.” 15 and said to him, “Take all the vessels, and go, put them in the house that is in Hierousalēm in their place.”

16 Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and since that time even until now has it been in building, and yet it is not finished.

16 Then that Sasabasar came, and laid the foundations of the house of God in Hierousalēm; and from that time even until now it has been building, and hasn’t been finished.’ 16 Then that Sabanasar came, and laid the foundations of the house of God in Hierousalēm; and from that time even until now it has been building, and hasn’t been finished.’

17 Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.

17 And now, if it is good for the king, let search be made in the treasury-house of the king at Babylōn, that you may know that a decision was made by king Kyrus to build that house of God which is in Hierousalēm. When the king knows about this, let him send it to us.” 17 And now, if it is good for the king, let search be made in the treasury-house of the king at Babylōn, that you may know that a decision was made by king Kyrus to build that house of God which is in Hierousalēm. When the king knows about this, let him send it to us.”
