Adversaries Hinder the Work
1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the sons of the captivity built the temple to Yahweh Elohim of Israēl;
1 And the ones who afflicted Jouda and Benjamin heard that the sons of the captivity were building a house to the Lord God of Israēl. | 1 And the ones who afflicted Jouda and Benjamin heard that the sons of the captivity were building a house to the Lord God of Israēl. |
2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said to them, Let’s build with you; for we seek your God, as you do; and we sacrifice to him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, who brought us up here.

2 And they approached Zorobabel, and the leaders of the families, and said to them, “We will build with you; because just like you, we seek our God, and we sacrifice to him from the days of Asaraddōn king of Assour who brought us here.” | 2 And they approached Zorobabel, and the leaders of the families, and said to them, “We will build with you; because just like you, we seek our God, and we sacrifice to him from the days of Asaraddōn king of Assour who brought us here.” |
3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israēl, said to them, You have nothing to do with us to build a house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to Yahweh Elohim of Israēl, as king Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.
3 then Zorobabel, and Jēsous and the rest of the leaders of the families of Israēl said to them, “It is not for us and for you to build a house to our God, for we ourselves together will build for our Lord God, as Kyrus the king of the Persians commanded us.” | 3 then Zorobabel, and Jēsous and the rest of the leaders of the families of Israēl said to them, “It is not for us and for you to build a house to our God, for we ourselves together will build for our Lord God, as Kyrus the king of the Persians commanded us.” |
4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
4 And the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Jouda, and hindered them from building, | 4 And the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Jouda, and hindered them from building, |
5 And hired counsellers against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
5 and kept hiring people against them, plotting to disperse their plan, all the days of Kyrus king of the Persians, and until the reign of Dareius king of the Persians. | 5 and kept hiring people against them, plotting to disperse their plan, all the days of Kyrus king of the Persians, and until the reign of Dareius king of the Persians. |
6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote to him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

The Letter to King Artaxerxes
8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort.
8 Rhaoum the chancellor, and Samsai the scribe wrote an epistle against Hierousalēm to King Arthasastha, saying, | 8 Rhaoum the chancellor, and Samsai the scribe wrote an epistle against Hierousalēm to King Arthasastha, saying, |
9 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
9 “Thus Rhaoum the chancellor judged, also Samsai the scribe, and the rest of our fellow-servants, the Dinais, the Apharsathachaeans, the Tarphallaeans, the Apharsaeans, the Archyaeans, the Babylōnians, the Sousanachaeans, who are Ēlamites, | 9 “Thus Rhaoum the chancellor judged, also Sampsai the scribe, and the rest of our fellow-servants, the Deinais, the Apharsathachaeans, the Tarphalaeans, the Aphasraeans, the Archyaeans, the Babylōnians, the Sousanachaeans, Davaeans, |
10 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
10 and the rest of the nations which the great and noble Assenaphar exiled, and settled them in the cities of Somorōn, and the rest of them beyond the river.” | 10 and the rest of the nations which the great and noble Assenaphar exiled, and settled them in the cities of Somorōn, and the rest of them beyond the river.” |
11 This is the copy of the letter that they sent to him, even to Artaxerxes the king; Your servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
11 This is the content of the letter, which they sent to him. To king Arthasastha, Your servants, men beyond the river. | 11 This is the content of the letter, which they sent to him. To king Arthasastha, Your servants, men beyond the river. |
12 Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from you to us are come to Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls of it, and joined the foundations.
12 “Let it be known to the king that the Joudeans who came up from you to us came to Hierousalēm the rebellious and wicked city, which they are building, and its walls are set in order, and they have established its foundations. | 12 “Let it be known to the king that the Joudeans who came up from you to us came to Hierousalēm the rebellious and wicked city, which they are building, and its walls are set in order, and they have established its foundations. |
13 Be it known now to the king, that, if this city be built, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so you shall diminish the revenue of the kings.
13 Now then be it known to the king, that if that city be built up, and its walls restored, there will be no tribute to you, nor will they give. And this wrongs kings. | 13 Now then be it known to the king, that if that city be built up, and its walls restored, there will be no tribute to you, nor will they give. And this wrongs kings. |
14 Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it wasn’t meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
14 And it is not proper for us to see the disgrace of the king; therefore have we sent and made known this to the king; | 14 And it is not proper for us to see the disgrace of the king; therefore have we sent and made known this to the king; |
15 That search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers; so you shall find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city destroyed.
15 In order that he examines in your fathers’s history books; and you will find, and know that that city is rebellious, and is harmful to kings and countries; also there are hide-outs for slaves from long ago in the middle of it. For this reason this city was devastated. | 15 In order that he examines in your fathers’s history books; and you will find, and know that that city is rebellious, and is harmful to kings and countries; also there are hide-outs for slaves from long ago in the middle of it. For this reason this city was devastated. |
16 We certify the king that, if this city be built again, and the walls of it set up, by this means you shall have no portion on this side the river.
16 We therefore make known to the king, that, if that city should be built, and its walls restored, you won’t have peace.” | 16 We therefore make known to the king, that, if that city should be built, and its walls restored, you won’t have peace.” |
The King Replies and Work Stops
17 Then sent the king an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and to the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
17 Then the king sent to Rhaoum the chancellor, and Samsai the scribe, and the rest of their fellow-servants who dwelt in Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, saying, Peace and news, | 17 Then the king sent to Rhaoum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and the rest of their fellow-servants who dwelt in Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, saying, Peace and news, |
18 The letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me.
18 “The tribute-gatherer whom you sent to us, has been called before me. | 18 “The tribute-gatherer whom you sent to us, has been called before me. |
19 And I commanded, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of old time has made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it.
19 And a decision was made by me, and we have looked and found that from remote days that city rises up against kings, and that revolts and hide-outs are in it. | 19 And a decision was made by me, and we have looked and found that from remote days that city rises up against kings, and that revolts and hide-outs are in it. |
20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid to them.
20 And there were powerful kings in Hierousalēm, and they prevailed over all the area west of the river, and full tribute and share were given to them. | 20 And there were powerful kings in Hierousalēm, and they prevailed over all the area beyond the river, and full tribute and share were given to them. |
21 Give now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city won’t be built, until another commandment shall be given from me.
21 Now therefore make a decision to halt those men, and that city won’t be built any further, as a result of the decision. | 21 Now therefore make a decision to halt those men, and that city won’t be built any further, |
22 Take heed now that you don’t fail to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
22 Watch out for negligence in doing this, lest destruction increase to the harm of kings.” | 22 As a result of the decision, watch out for negligence in doing this, lest destruction increase to the harm of kings.” |
23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
23 Then the tribute-gatherer of king Arthasastha read before Rhaoum the chancellor, and Samsai the scribe, and his fellow-servants. Then they went in a hurry to Hierousalēm and through Jouda; and with horses and force, they caused them to cease. | 23 Then the tribute-gatherer of king Arthasastha read before Rhaoum the chancellor, and Samsai the scribe, and his fellow-servants. Then they went in a hurry to Hierousalēm and through Jouda; and with horses and force, they caused them to cease. |
24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased to the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
24 Then the work of the house of God in Hierousalēm ceased, and it was idle until the second year of the reign of Dareius king of the Persians. | 24 Then the work of the house of God in Hierousalēm ceased, and it was idle until the second year of the reign of Dareius king of the Persians. |
