Nineveh Repents

1 And the word of Yahweh came to Jonah the second time, saying,

1 And the word of the Lord came to Jōnas the second time, saying, 1 And the word of the Lord came to Jōnas the second time, saying,

2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the preaching that I bid you.

2 “Rise, go into Ninevē, the great city, and preach in it according to the previous proclamation which I spoke to you.” 2 “Rise, go into Ninevē, the great city, and preach in it according to the previous proclamation which I spoke to you.”

3 So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey.

3 And Jōnas arose, and went into Ninevē, just as the Lord said. Now Ninevē was a large city to God, of about three days’ journey. 3 And Jōnas arose, and went into Ninevē, as the Lord said. Now Ninevē was a large city to God, of about three days’ journey.

4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet 40 days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

4 And Jōnas began to enter into the city about a day’s journey, and he proclaimed, and said, Yet three days, and Ninevē shall be overthrown. 4 And Jōnas began to enter into the city about a day’s journey, and he proclaimed, and said, Yet three days, and Ninevē shall be overthrown.

5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the great of them even to the least of them.

5 And the men of Ninevē believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and wore sackcloths, from the greatest of them to the least of them. 5 And the men of Ninevē believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and wore sackcloths, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

6 For word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

6 And the word reached the king of Ninevē, and he arose from his throne, and removed his long robe from him, and wrapped on sackcloth, and sat on ashes. 6 And the word reached the king of Ninevē, and he arose from his throne, and removed his long robe from him, and wrapped on sackcloth, and sat on ashes.

7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything: don’t let them feed, nor drink water.

7 And proclamation was made, and it was commanded in Ninevē by the king and by his noblemen, saying, “Don’t let men, or cattle, or oxen, or sheep, taste any thing, nor feed, nor drink water. 7 And proclamation was made, and it was commanded in Ninevē by the king and by his noblemen, saying, “Don’t let men, or cattle, or oxen, or sheep, taste any thing, nor feed, nor drink water.

8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God: yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

8 So men and cattle were clothed with sackcloths, and shouted to God fervently; and they turned everyone away from his evil way, and from the iniquity that was in their hands, saying, 8 So men and cattle were clothed with sackcloths, and shouted to God fervently; and they turned everyone away from their evil way, and from the iniquity that was in their hands, saying,

9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

9 Τίς οἶδεν εἰ μετανοήσει θεὸς καὶ ἀποστρέψει ἐξ ὀργῆς θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀπολώμεθα; 9 τίς οἶδεν εἰ μετανοήσει Θεὸς καὶ ἀποστρέψει ἐξ ὀργῆς θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀπολώμεθα;
9 Who knows if God will repent, and turn away from the anger of his wrath, and we won’t perish?” 9 Who knows if God will repent, and turn away from the anger of his wrath, and we won’t perish?”

10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do to them; and he did it not.

10 And God saw their works, that they turned away from their evil ways; and God repented concerning the evil which he said he would do to them; and he didn’t do it. 10 And God saw their works, that they turned away from their evil ways; and God repented concerning the evil which he said he would do to them; and he didn’t do it.
