Jonah’s Displeasure Rebuked

1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

1 But Jōnas was very deeply grieved, and he was confused. 1 But Jōnas was very deeply grieved, and he was confused

2 And he prayed to Yahweh, and said, please, Oh Yahweh, wasn’t this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repent you of the evil.

2 καὶ προσεύξατο πρὸς κύριον καὶ εἶπεν κύριε, οὐχ οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι μου ἔτι ὄντος μου ἐν τῇ γῇ μου;
2 καὶ προσηύξατο πρὸς Κύριον καὶ εἶπε· Κύριε, οὐχ οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι μου ἔτι ὄντος μου ἐν τῇ γῇ μου;
2 And he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Oh Lord, were these not my words when I was still in my land? Therefore I acted with foresight to flee to Tharsis; because I knew that you are merciful and compassionate, patient, and merciful, and repenting of evil. 2 And he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Oh Lord, were these not my words when I was still in my land? Therefore I acted with foresight to flee to Tharsis; because I knew that you are merciful and compassionate, patient, and merciful, and repenting of evil.

3 Therefore now, Oh Yahweh, take, I beseech you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

3 And now, Master Lord, take my soul from me; because it is better for me to die than to live.” 3 And now, Master Lord, take my soul from me; because it is better for me to die than to live.”

4 Then said Yahweh, Doest you well to be angry?

4 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Ἰωνᾶν Εἰ σφόδρα λελύπησαι σύ; 4 καὶ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς Ἰωνᾶν· εἰ σφόδρα λελύπησαι σύ;
4 And the Lord said to Jōnas, “Are you very much grieved?” 4 And the Lord said to Jōnas, “Are you very much grieved?”

5 So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a tent, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

5 And Jōnas went out from the city, and sat over against the city; and he made tent there for himself, and he sat beneath its shade until he saw what would become of the city. 5 And Jōnas went out from the city, and sat over against the city; and he made tent there for himself, and he sat beneath its shade until he saw what would become of the city.

6 And Yahweh Elohim prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

6 And the Lord God commanded a gourd, and it came up over the head of Jōnas, to be a shade over his head, to shade him from his calamities; and Jōnas rejoiced with great joy for the gourd. 6 And the Lord God commanded a gourd, and it came up over the head of Jōnas, to be a shade over his head, to shade him from his calamities; and Jōnas rejoiced with great joy for the gourd.

7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

7 In the next morning, God commanded a worm, and it hit the gourd, and it dried up. 7 In the next morning, God commanded a worm, and it hit the gourd, and it dried up.

8 And it happened, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat on the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

8 As the sun began to rise, that God commanded a burning hot wind; and the sun hit on the head of Jōnas, and he fainted, and gave up his soul, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.” 8 As the sun began to rise, that God commanded a burning hot wind; and the sun hit on the head of Jōnas, and he fainted, and gave up his soul, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”

9 And God said to Jonah, Are you right to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I am right to be angry, even to death.

9 καὶ εἶπεν θεὸς πρὸς Ἰωνᾶν Εἰ σφόδρα λελύπησαι σὺ ἐπὶ τῇ κολοκύνθῃ;
9 καὶ εἶπε Θεὸς πρὸς Ἰωνᾶν· εἰ σφόδρα λελύπησαι σὺ ἐπὶ τῇ κολοκύνθῃ;
9 And God said to Jōnas, “Are you very much grieved for the gourd?” And he said, “I am very much grieved, even to death.” 9 And God said to Jōnas, “Are you very much grieved for the gourd?” And he said, “I am very much grieved, even to death.”

10 Then said Yahweh, You have had pity on the gourd, for the which you haven’t laboured, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night.

10 And the Lord said, “You showed sympathy for the gourd, for which you haven’t suffered, neither did you nourish it; which came up before night, and perished before another night. 10 And the Lord said, “You showed sympathy for the gourd, for which you haven’t suffered, neither did you nourish it; which came up before night, and perished before another night.

11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than 60,000 persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

11 and shall not I spare Ninevē, the great city, in which dwell more than twelve times 10,000 human beings, who don’t know their right hand or their left hand; and also much cattle?” 11 and shall not I spare Ninevē, the great city, in which dwell more than twelve times 10,000 human beings, who don’t know their right hand or their left hand; and also much cattle?”
