Chapter 11

AlexandrinusVaticanus

God Yearns over His People

1 When Israēl was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

1 Because Israēl was an infant, and I loved him, and out of Aigypt I summoned his children. 1 At dawn they were thrown away; Israēl’s king was thrown away; because Israēl was an infant, and I loved him, and out of Aigypt I summoned his children.

2 As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed to Baals, and burned incense to carved images.

2 As I summoned them, so they moved away from my presence; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and offering incense to carvings. 2 As I summoned them, so they moved away from my presence; they kept sacrificing to the Baaleim and offering incense to carvings.

3 I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they didn’t know that I healed them.

3 And I shackled the feet of Ephraim; I took him on my arm; and they didn’t know that I had healed them. 3 And I shackled the feet of Ephraim; I took him on my arm; and they didn’t know that I had healed them.

4 I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love; and I was to them as they who take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid food to them.

4 Within the ruin of men, I stretched them out with the chains of my love. And I will be to them like a man striking his cheeks. And I will watch him attentively; I will prevail with him. 4 Within the ruin of men, I stretched them out with the chains of my love. And I will be to them like a man striking his cheeks. And I will watch him attentively; I will prevail with him.

5 He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.

5 Ephraim settled in Aigypt, and Assour himself was his king, because they didn’t want to return. 5 Ephraim settled in Aigypt, and Assour himself was his king, because they didn’t want to return.

6 And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels.

6 And the sword was weak in his cities and ceased in his hands. And they shall eat from their plots. 6 And the sword was weak in his cities and ceased in his hands. And they shall eat from their plots.

7 And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.

7 And his people are hanging from his dwelling place, and God will be angered at his precious things and will not lift him up. 7 And his people are hanging from his dwelling place, and God will be angered at his precious things and will not lift him up.

8 How shall I give you up, Ephraim? How shall I deliver you, Israēl? How shall I make you as Admah? How shall I set you as Zeboim? My heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.

8 τί σὲ διαθῶ, Ἐφραίμ;
ὑπερασπιῶ σου, Ἰσραήλ;
τί σὲ διαθῶ;
ὡς Ἀδαμὰ θήσομαί σὲ καὶ ὡς Σεβωῒμ;
8 τί σε διαθῶμαι, Ἐφραίμ;
ὑπερασπιῶ σου, Ἰσραήλ;
τί σε διαθῶ;
ὡς Ἀδαμὰ θήσομαί σε καὶ ὡς Σεβοείμ;
8 How am I to treat you, Oh Ephraim? Shall I shield you, Oh Israēl? How am I to treat you? Shall I make you like Adama and like Sebōim? My heart was turned around in them; my sense of regret was confounded. 8 How am I to treat you, Oh Ephraim? Shall I shield you, Oh Israēl? How am I to treat you? Shall I make you like Adama and like Sebōeim? My heart was turned around in them; my sense of regret was confounded.

9 I won’t execute the fierceness of my anger, I won’t return to destroy Ephraim; for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of you; and I won’t enter into the city.

9 I won’t do according to the anger of my wrath; I won’t abandon Ephraim to be wiped out; because I am God and not a man, holy in your midst, and I will not enter into a city. 9 I won’t do according to the anger of my wrath; I won’t abandon Ephraim to be wiped out; because I am God and not a man, holy in your midst, and I will not enter into a city.

10 They shall walk after Yahweh: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.

10 I will go after the Lord; he will roar like a lion. Because he will roar, even the children of waters shall be amazed. 10 I will go after the Lord; he will roar like a lion. Because he will roar, even the children of waters shall be amazed.

11 They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria; and I will place them in their houses, says Yahweh.

11 And they shall be amazed like a bird from Aigypt and like a dove from the land of the Assyrians, and I will restore them to their homes, says the Lord. 11 And they shall be amazed like a bird from Aigypt and like a dove from the land of the Assyrians, and I will restore them to their homes, says the Lord.

12 [M 12:1] Ephraim encircles me about with lies, and the house of Israēl with deceit; but Judah yet rules with God, and is faithful with the saints.

12 Ephraim has surrounded me with a lie, and the house of Israēl and Joudas with impiety; now God knew them, and the holy people shall be called God’s. 12 Ephraim has surrounded me with a lie, and the house of Israēl and Joudas with impiety; now God knew them, and the holy people shall be called God’s.
