Chapter 12

Ephraim Reminded

1 [M 12:2] Ephraim feeds on wind, and follows after the east wind: he daily increases lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.

1 Ephraim is an evil wind; he pursued hot wind all day long. He multiplied empty and worthless things, and he made a covenant with the Assyrians and kept trading olive oil to Aigypt. 1 Ephraim is an evil wind; he pursued hot wind all day long. He multiplied empty and worthless things, and he made a covenant with the Assyrians and kept trading olive oil to Aigypt.

2 [M 12:3] Yahweh has also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacōb according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.

2 And the Lord has a judgment against Joudas, to punish Jacōb according to his ways, and he will repay him according to his business. 2 And the Lord has a judgment against Joudas, to punish Jacōb according to his ways, and he will repay him according to his business.

3 [M 12:4] He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God.

3 In the womb he kicked his brother and in his hardships prevailed against God. 3 In the womb he kicked his brother and in his hardships prevailed against God.

4 [M 12:5] Yes, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication to him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spoke with us;

4 And he fought with an angel and predominated. They wept and begged me; they found me in the house of Ōn, and there a word was spoken to him. 4 And he fought with an angel and predominated. They wept and begged me; they found me in the house of Ōn, and there a word was spoken to him.

5 [M 12:6] Even Yahweh Elohim of armies; Yahweh is his memorial.

5 But the Lord Almighty God shall be his memorial. 5 But the Lord Almighty God shall be his memorial.

6 [M 12:7] Therefore turn you to your God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on your God continually.

6 And as for you, you shall return by your God. Guard mercy and judgment, and draw near to your God continually. 6 And as for you, you shall return by your God. Guard mercy and judgment, and draw near to your God continually.

7 [M 12:8] He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loves to oppress.

7 In his hand Chanaan is a yoke of injustice; he has loved to oppress. 7 In his hand Chanaan is a yoke of injustice; he has loved to oppress.

8 [M 12:9] And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.

8 And Ephraim said, “But I am rich; I have found relief for myself.” None of the fruits of his toil will be available to him, because of the injustice with which he sinned. 8 And Ephraim said, “But I am rich; I have found relief for myself.” None of the fruits of his toil will be available to him, because of the injustice with which he sinned.

9 [M 12:10] And I that am Yahweh your Elohim from the land of Egypt will yet make you to dwell in tents, as in the days of the solemn feast.

9 But I the Lord, your God, brought you up from the land of Aigypt; I will make you live in tents again, just as the day of the feast. 9 But I the Lord, your God, brought you up from the land of Aigypt; I will make you live in tents again, just as the day of the feast.

10 [M 12:11] I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.

10 And I will speak to the prophets, and I will multiplied visions, and I was made similar by the hand of the prophets. 10 And I will speak to the prophets, and I will multiplied visions, and I was made similar by the hand of the prophets.

11 [M 12:12] Is there iniquity in Gilead? Surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yes, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.

11 If Galaad is nothing, then the leaders offering sacrifices in Galgal were liars, and their altars like stone heaps on a dry plot of a field. 11 If Galaad is nothing, then the leaders offering sacrifices in Galgal were liars, and their altars like stone heaps on a dry plot of a field.

12 [M 12:13] And Jacōb fled into the country of Syria, and Israēl served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.

12 And Jacōb retreated to the plain of Syria, and Israēl was subject because of a wife, and because of a wife he kept watch. 12 And Jacōb retreated to the plain of Syria, and Israēl was subject because of a wife, and because of a wife he kept watch.

13 [M 12:14] And by a prophet Yahweh brought Israēl out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.

13 And through a prophet the Lord brought Israēl up from Aigypt, and through a prophet he was guarded. 13 And through a prophet the Lord brought Israēl up from Aigypt, and through a prophet he was guarded.

14 [M 12:15] Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly; therefore he shall leave his blood on him, and his reproach shall his Lord return to him.

14 Ephraim became angry and provoked, and his blood shall be poured out on him, and the Lord shall repay him for his reproach. 14 Ephraim became angry and provoked, and his blood shall be poured out on him, and the Lord shall repay him for his reproach.
