Ephraim’s Idolatry
1 When Ephraim spoke trembling, he exalted himself in Israēl; but when he offended in Baal, he died.
1 According to the word, Ephraim himself received statutes in Israēl, and he established them for the goddess Baal and he died. | 1 According to the word, Ephraim himself received statutes in Israēl, and he established them for the goddess Baal and he died. |
2 And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men who sacrifice kiss the calves.
2 And they continued to sin and made a casting for themselves from their silver according to the likeness of idols, works of artisans completed for them. “Sacrifice men,” they say, “for calves have died out.” | 2 And now they continued to sin and made a casting for themselves from their silver according to the likeness of idols, works of artisans completed for them. “Sacrifice men,” they say, “for calves have died out.” |
3 Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that passes away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.
3 Therefore they shall be like a morning mist and like an early dew that goes away, like dust that blows away from the threshing floor and like a cloud of grasshoppers. | 3 Therefore they shall be like a morning mist and like an early dew that goes away, like dust that blows away from the threshing floor and like a mist of tears. |
4 Yet I am Yahweh your Elohim from the land of Egypt, and you shall know no god but me; for there is no saviour beside me.
4 But I am the Lord your God who makes heaven firm and creates land, whose hands created all the group of objects of the sky. And I didn’t display them for you to follow after them. And I brought you up from the land of Aigypt, and you shall know no God except me, and apart from me there is no one who saves. | 4 But I am the Lord your God, the one who makes heaven firm and creates land, whose hands created all the group of objects of the sky. And I didn’t display them for you to follow after them. And I brought you up from the land of Aigypt, and you shall know no God except me, and apart from me there is no one who saves. |
5 I knew you in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.
5 I tended you in the wilderness, in an uninhabitable land, | 5 I tended you in the wilderness, in an uninhabitable land, |
6 According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.

7 Therefore I will be to them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them.
7 And I will become like a panther to them and like a leopard according to the way of the Assyrians. | 7 And I will become like a panther to them and like a leopard according to the way of the Assyrians. |
8 I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will tear the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.
8 I will meet them like a hungry bear and shatter the enclosure of their heart. And cubs of the thicket will devour them there; wild animals of the field will tear them apart. | 8 I will meet them like a hungry bear and shatter the enclosure of their heart. And cubs of the thicket will devour them there; wild animals of the field will tear them apart. |
9 Oh Israēl, you have destroyed yourself; but in me is your help.
9 In your destruction, Oh Israēl, who will help you? | 9 In your destruction, Oh Israēl, who will help you? |
10 I will be your king: where is any other that may save you in all your cities? And your judges of whom you said, Give me a king and princes?
10

10 Where is this king of yours? And let him save you in all your cities. Let him judge you who said, “Give me a king and a leader.” | 10 Where is this king of yours? And let him save you in all your cities. Let him judge you who said, “Give me a king and a leader.” |
11 I gave you a king in my anger, and took him away in my wrath.
11 And I gave you a king in my anger and sustained in my wrath | 11 And I gave you a king in my anger and sustained in my wrath |
12 The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is hid.

13 The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come on him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.

13 Pains as of her who is giving birth will come to him. This son is not sensible, because he won’t withstand in the crushing of children. | 13 Pains as of her who is giving birth will come to him. This son is not sensible, because he won’t withstand in the crushing of children. |
14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: Oh death, I will be your plagues; Oh grave, I will be your destruction: repentance shall be hid from my eyes.

14 I shall rescue them out of the hand of Hades and shall redeem them from Death. Oh Death, where is your sentence? Oh Hades, where is your sharp goad? Comfort is concealed from my eyes. | 14 I shall rescue them out of the hand of Hades and shall redeem them from Death. Oh Death, where is your sentence? Oh Hades, where is your sharp goad? Comfort is concealed from my eyes. |
15 Though he be fruitful among his brothers, an east wind shall come, the wind of Yahweh shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.
15

15 Because this one will cause separation among brothers; the Lord will bring a hot wind out of the wilderness against him, and it will dry up his streams; it will devastate his fountains. It will dry up his land, and all his desirable vessels. | 15 Because this one will cause separation among brothers; the Lord will bring a hot wind out of the wilderness against him, and it will dry up his streams; it will devastate his fountains. 16 [M 14:1] Samaria shall become desolate; for she has rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.
