Chapter 10

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Retribution for Israēl’s Sin

1 Israēl is an empty vine, he brings forth fruit to himself: according to the multitude of his fruit he has increased the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made good images.

1 Israēl is a luxuriantly growing vine; fruit thrives on it. According to the multitude of its fruits, he increased altars; according to the good things of his land, they built pillars. 1 Israēl is a luxuriantly growing vine; fruit thrives on it. According to the multitude of its fruits, he increased altars; according to the good things of his land, they built pillars.

2 Their heart is divided; now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall spoil their images.

2 It divided their hearts. Now they will be annihilated; he will break down their altars; their pillars will endure distress. 2 It divided their hearts. Now they will be annihilated; he will break down their altars; their pillars will endure distress.

3 For now they shall say, We have no king, because we didn’t fear Yahweh; what then should a king do to us?

3 διότι νῦν ἐροῦσιν οὐκ ἔστιν βασιλεὺς ἡμῖν, ὅτι οὐκ ἐφοβήθημεν τὸν κύριον, δὲ βασιλεὺς τί ποιήσει ἡμῖν; 3 διότι νῦν ἐροῦσιν· οὐκ ἔστι βασιλεὺς ἡμῖν, ὅτι οὐκ ἐφοβήθημεν τὸν Κύριον, δὲ βασιλεὺς τί ποιήσει ἡμῖν;
3 Because now they will say, “We have no king, because we didn’t fear the Lord, but the king, what will he do for us?” 3 Because now they will say, “We have no king, because we didn’t fear the Lord, but the king, what will he do for us?”

4 They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springs up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.

4 Voicing words, lying excuses, he will decree a covenant; judgment will spring up like grass on a dry part of a field. 4 Voicing words, lying excuses, he will decree a covenant; judgment will spring up like grass on a dry part of a field.

5 The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Beth-aven; for the people of it shall mourn over it, and the priests of it that rejoiced on it, for the glory of it, because it is departed from it.

5 The inhabitants of Samaria will dwell near the calf of the house of Ōn, because his people mourned for him. And just as they provoked him, they will rejoice over his glory, because it had been deported from him. 5 The inhabitants of Samaria will dwell near the calf of the house of Ōn, because his people mourned for him. And just as they provoked him, they will rejoice over his glory, because it had been deported from him.

6 It shall be also carried to Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israēl shall be ashamed of his own counsel.

6 And they carried him wrapped to the Assyrians as friendly gifts to King Jarim. Ephraim will accept with a gift, and Israēl will be shamed by his advice. 6 And they carried him wrapped to the Assyrians as friendly gifts to King Jareim. Ephraim will accept with a gift, and Israēl will be shamed by his advice.

7 As for Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam on the water.

7 Samaria tossed out her king like kindling on the surface of the water. 7 Samaria tossed out her king like kindling on the surface of the water.

8 The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israēl, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us.

8 And altars of Ōn, the sins of Israēl, shall be destroyed. Thorns and thistles shall grow up on their altars. And they shall say to the mountains, Cover us, and to the hills, Fall on us. 8 And the altars of Ōn, the sins of Israēl, shall be taken away: thorns and thistles shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us.

9 Oh Israēl, you have sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity didn’t overtake them.

9 ἀφ’ οὗ οἱ βουνοί, ἥμαρτεν Ἰσραήλ, ἐκεῖ ἔστησαν· οὐ μὴ καταλάβῃ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ βουνῷ πόλεμος ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ἀδικίας; 9 Ἀφ’ οὗ οἱ βουνοί, ἥμαρτεν Ἰσραήλ, ἐκεῖ ἔστησαν· οὐ μὴ καταλάβῃ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ βουνῷ πόλεμος ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ἀδικίας;
9 From which time the hills existed, Israēl has sinned; there they stood. Will a war not overtake them in the hill, against the children of injustice? 9 From which time the hills existed, Israēl has sinned; there they stood. Will a war not overtake them in the hill, against the children of injustice?

10 It is in my desire that I should chastise them; and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows.

10 I have come to discipline them, and peoples shall be gathered against them, when they are disciplined for their double injustice. 10 I have come to discipline them, and peoples shall be gathered against them, when they are disciplined for their double injustice.

11 And Ephraim is as a heifer that is taught, and loves to tread out the grain; but I passed over on her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride; Judah shall plow, and Jacōb shall break his clods.

11 Ephraim is a heifer taught to love quarrels. So I shall come against the most beautiful part of her neck; I shall mount Ephraim; I shall pass over Joudas in silence; Jacōb will prevail over him. 11 Ephraim is a heifer taught to love quarrels. So I shall come against the most beautiful part of her neck; I shall mount Ephraim; I shall pass over Joudas in silence; Jacōb will prevail over him.

12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek Yahweh, till he come and rain righteousness on you.

12 Sow for yourselves to righteousness; reap to the fruit of life; illuminate yourselves with the light of knowledge. Seek the Lord until the produce of righteousness comes to you. 12 Sow for yourselves to righteousness; reap to the fruit of life; illuminate yourselves with the light of knowledge. Seek the Lord until the produce of righteousness comes to you.

13 You have plowed wickedness, you have reaped iniquity; you have eaten the fruit of lies: because you did trust in your way, in the multitude of your mighty men.

13 ἵνα τί παρεσιωπήσατε ἀσέβειαν καὶ τὰς ἀδικίας αὐτῆς ἐτρυγήσατε, ἐφάγετε καρπὸν ψευδῆ;
13 ἱνατὶ παρεσιωπήσατε ἀσέβειαν καὶ τὰς ἀδικίας αὐτῆς ἐτρυγήσατε;
13 Why did you keep silent about ungodliness and reap her injustice, ate a false fruit? Because you hoped in your chariots, in the multitude of your army! 13 Why did you keep silent about ungodliness and reap her injustice? You ate a false fruit because you hoped in your sins, in the multitude of your army!

14 Therefore shall a tumult arise among your people, and all your fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces on her children.

14 And destruction shall rise up against your people, and all your walled places shall disappear, as the ruler Salaman from the house of Hierobaal, in the days of battle, dashed a mother to the ground with her children. 14 And destruction shall rise up against your people, and all your walled places shall disappear, as the ruler Salaman from the house of Hierobaal, in the days of battle, dashed a mother to the ground with her children.

15 So shall Bethel do to you because of your great wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israēl utterly be cut off.

15 Thus I will do to you, Oh house of Israēl, because of your evil; at dawn they were thrown away; Israēl’s king was thrown away. 15 Thus I will do to you, Oh house of Israēl, because of your evil injustice.
