Israēl Multiplies in Egypt

1 Now these are the names of the sons of Israēl, who came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacōb.

5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacōb were 70 souls; for Joseph was in Egypt already.

5 But Jōsēph was in Aigypt. Now all souls from Jakōb were 75. 5 But Jōsēph was in Aigypt. Now all souls from Jakōb were 75.

6 And Joseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation.

6 Then Jōsēph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. 6 Then Jōsēph died, and all his brothers and all that generation.

7 And the sons of Israēl were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grown exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

7 But the sons of Israēl increased and multiplied and became numerous and were growing very, very strong. Now the land multiplied them. 7 But the sons of Israēl increased and multiplied and became numerous and were growing very, very strong. Now the land multiplied them.

8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph.

8 Then another king arose over Aigypt, who didn’t know Jōsēph. 8 Then another king arose over Aigypt, who didn’t know Jōsēph.

9 And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of the sons of Israēl are more and mightier than we.

9 Then he said to his nation, “Look, the race of the sons of Israēl is a great multitude and is stronger than we.” 9 Then he said to his nation, “Look, the race of the sons of Israēl is a great multitude and is stronger than we.”

10 Come on, let’s deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falls out any war, they join also to our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.”

10 Come then, let’s outwit them, lest it be multiplied, and, whenever war happens to us, these also shall be added to the opponents, and after they go to war against us, they depart out of the land. 10 Come then, let’s outwit them, lest it be multiplied, and, whenever war happens to us, these also shall be added to the opponents, and after they go to war against us, they depart out of the land.

11 Therefore they set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

11 And he set over them work supervisors in order to afflict them in the work. And they built fortified cities for Pharaō, both Pithōm and Rhamessē and Ōn, which is Sun City. 11 And he set over them work supervisors in order to afflict them in the work. And they built fortified cities for Pharaō, both Pithōm and Rhamessē and Ōn, which is Heliopolis.

12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the sons of Israēl.

12 But as much as they were humbling them, by so much the more they kept becoming very very strong, and the Aigyptians were sickened by the sons of Israēl. 12 But as much as they were humbling them, by so much the more they kept becoming very very strong, and the Aigyptians were sickened by the sons of Israēl.

13 And the Egyptians made the sons of Israēl to serve with rigour.

13 And the Aigyptians were oppressing the sons of Israēl by force. 13 And the Aigyptians were oppressing the sons of Israēl by force.

14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service, in which they made them serve, was with rigour.

14 and were grievously afflicting their life by the hard work in clay and brick making and all the work in the plains, according to all the work in which they were enslaving them with force. 14 and were grievously afflicting their life by the hard work in clay and brick making and all the work in the plains, according to all the work in which they were enslaving them with force.

15 And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah.

15 And the king of the Aigyptians spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, to one of them whose name was Sepphōra, and the name of the second was Phoua, 15 And the king of the Aigyptians spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, to one of them whose name was Sepphōra, and the name of the second was Phoua,

16 And he said, “When you do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the stools; if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

16 and he said, “When you act as midwives for the Hebrew women and they should be about to give birth–if male, kill it; but if female, preserve it.” 16 and he said, “When you act as midwives for the Hebrew women and they should be about to give birth–if male, kill it; but if female, preserve it.”

17 But the midwives feared God, and didn’t do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive.

17 But the midwives feared God, and they didn’t do as the king of Aigypt instructed them and were keeping the males alive. 17 But the midwives feared God, and they didn’t do as the king of Aigypt instructed them and were keeping the males alive.

18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and have saved the male children alive?”

18 ἐκάλεσεν δὲ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου τὰς μαίας καὶ εἶπεν αὐταῖς τί ὅτι ἐποιήσατε τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο καὶ ἐζωογονεῖτε τὰ ἄρσενα; 18 ἐκάλεσε δὲ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου τὰς μαίας καὶ εἶπε αὐταῖς· τί ὅτι ἐποιήσατε τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο καὶ ἐζωογονεῖτε τὰ ἄρσενα;
18 Then the king of Aigypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why is it that you have done this thing and kept the males alive?” 18 Then the king of Aigypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why is it that you have done this thing and kept the males alive?”

19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered before the midwives come in to them.”

19 The midwives then said to Pharaō, “The Hebrew women are not like the women of Aigypt, for they give birth before the midwives go in to them, and they were already giving birth.” 19 The midwives then said to Pharaō, “The Hebrew women are not like the women of Aigypt, for they give birth before the midwives go in to them, and they were already giving birth.”

20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.

20 Now God was doing well with the midwives, and the people kept on multiplying and becoming very strong. 20 Now God was doing well with the midwives, and the people kept on multiplying and becoming very strong.

21 And it happened, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

21 Because the midwives were fearing God, they made families for themselves. 21 Because the midwives were fearing God, they made families for themselves.

22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, “Every son that is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

22 Then Pharaō instructed all his people, saying, “Every male that might be born to the Hebrews, throw into the river, and every female, keep it alive.” 22 Then Pharaō instructed all his people, saying, “Every male that might be born to the Hebrews, throw into the river, and every female, keep it alive.”
