1 And Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept on him, and kissed him.

3 And they fulfilled his 40 days, for so the days of burial are numbered; and Aigypt mourned for him 70 days. | 3 And they fulfilled his 40 days, for so the days of burial are numbered; and Aigypt mourned for him 70 days. |
4 And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, please, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
4 And when the days of mourning had passed, Jōsēph spoke to the officials of Pharaō, saying, “If I have found favour before you, speak concerning me in the ears of Pharaō, saying, | 4 And when the days of mourning had passed, Jōsēph spoke to the officials of Pharaō, saying, “If I have found favour before you, speak concerning me in the ears of Pharaō, saying, |
5 ‘My father made me swear, saying, “Lo, I die: in my grave which I have dug for me in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore let me go up, please, and bury my father, and I will come again.’ ”
5 My father made me swear an oath, saying, ‛In the tomb which I dug for myself in Chanaan-land, there you shall bury me.’ Now then I will go up and bury my father, and I will return. | 5 My father made me swear an oath, saying, ‛In the tomb which I dug for myself in Chanaan-land, there you shall bury me.’ Now then I will go up and bury my father, and I will return. |
6 And Pharaoh said, “Go up, and bury your father, according as he made you swear.”
6 And Pharaō said, “Go up, bury your father, as he made you to swear.” | 6 And Pharaō said to Jōsēph, “Go up, bury your father, as he made you to swear.” |
7 And Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Aigypt,
7 So Jōsēph went up to bury his father; and all the servants of Pharaō went up with him, and the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Aigypt. | 7 So Jōsēph went up to bury his father; and all the servants of Pharaō went up with him, and the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Aigypt. |
8 And all the house of Joseph, and his brothers, and his father’s house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.
8 And all the household of Jōsēph, and his brothers, and all the house of his father, and his relatives; and they left behind the sheep and the oxen in Gesem’s land. | 8 And all the household of Jōsēph, and his brothers, and all the house of his father, and his relatives; and they left behind the sheep and the oxen in Gesem’s land. |
9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company.
9 And both chariots and horse riders went up with him; and it was a very great convoy of people. | 9 And both chariots and horse riders went up with him; and it was a very great convoy of people. |
10 And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very severe lamentation; and he made a mourning for his father seven days.
10 And they arrived at the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they lamented him with a very great and fervent lamentation, and he made mourning for his father seven days. | 10 And they arrived at the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they lamented him with a very great and fervent lamentation, and he made mourning for his father seven days. |
11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning to the Aigyptians.” Therefore its name was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond Jordan.
11 And the inhabitants of the land of Chanaan saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad and said, “This is a great mourning to the Aigyptians.” Therefore someone called the name of the place Mourning-of-Aigypt, which is beyond the Jordan. | 11 And the inhabitants of the land of Chanaan saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad and said, “This is a great mourning to the Aigyptians.” Therefore someone called the name of the place Mourning-of-Aigypt, which is beyond the Jordan. |
Burial at Machpelah
12 And his sons did to him according as he commanded them.
12 And thus his sons did for him and they buried him there. | 12 And thus his sons did for him. |
13 For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a burial place of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.
13 And his sons took him up into Chanaan-land and buried him in the double cave before Mambrē, which cave Abraham acquired in acquisition of a tomb from Ephrōn the Chettite. | 13 And his sons took him up into Chanaan-land and buried him in the double cave before Mambrē, which cave Abraham acquired in acquisition of a tomb from Ephrōn the Chettite. |
14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brothers, and all who went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.
14 And Jōsēph returned to Aigypt, he and his brothers, and those who had gone up together to bury his father. | 14 And Jōsēph returned to Aigypt, he and his brothers, and those who had gone up together to bury his father. |
15 And when Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “Joseph will perhaps hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did to him.”
15 But after Jōsēph’s brothers saw that their father had died, they said, “Perhaps Jōsēph may bear a grudge against us and pay back a payback on us for all the evil things that we demonstrated to him.” | 15 But after Jōsēph’s brothers saw that their father had died, they said, “Perhaps Jōsēph may bear a grudge against us and pay back a payback on us for all the evil things that we demonstrated to him.” |
16 And they sent a messenger to Joseph, saying, “Your father commanded before he died, saying,
16 And they came to Jōsēph, saying, “Before his death, your father made us swear us, saying, | 16 And they came to Jōsēph, saying, “Before his death, your father made us swear us, saying, |
17 ‘So you shall say to Joseph, “Forgive, please now, the trespass of your brothers, and their sin; for they did to you evil.”’ and now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

23 And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son Manasseh were brought up on Joseph’s knees.
