1 The words of Neemia the son of Achalia. And it happened in the month Chaselev, of the 20th year, that I was in Sousan court. | 1 The words of Neemia the son of Achelia. And it happened in the month Chaselev, of the 20th year, that I was in Susan the palace. |
2 That Hanani, one of my brothers, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
2 And Hanani, one of my brothers, came, he and men of Jouda; and I asked them concerning those who had survived, who had been left from the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. | 2 And Anani, one of my brothers, came, he and men of Jouda; and I asked them concerning those who had survived, who had been left from the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. |
3 And they said to me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates of it are burned with fire.
3 And they said to me, “The remnant, who are left from the captivity, are there in the country, in great evil and reproach; and the walls of Jerusalem are demolished, and its gates are burned with fire.” | 3 And they said to me, “The remnant, who are left from the captivity, are there in the country, in great evil and reproach; and the walls of Jerusalem are demolished, and its gates are burned with fire.” |
4 And it happened, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,
4 And it happened, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for days, and was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. | 4 And it happened, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for days, and was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. |
5 And said, I beseech you, Oh Yahweh Elohim of heaven, the great and terrible God, who keeps covenant and mercy for those who love him and observe his commandments.
5 And I said, “No, please, Oh Lord God of heaven, the mighty, the great and fearsome, keeping covenant and mercy to those who love him, and to those who keep his commandments; | 5 And I said, “No, please, Oh Lord God of heaven, the mighty, the great and fearsome, keeping covenant and mercy to those who love him, and to those who keep his commandments; |
6 Let your ear now be attentive, and your eyes open, that you may hear the prayer of your servant, which I pray before you now, day and night, for the sons of Israēl your servants, and confess the sins of the sons of Israēl, which we have sinned against you: both I and my father’s house have sinned.

6 please let your ear be attentive, and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant, which I pray before you at this time, today both day and night, for the sons of Israēl your servants, and confess for the sins of the sons of Israēl, which we have sinned against you: both I and the house of my father have sinned. |
7 We have dealt very corruptly against you, and haven’t kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which you commanded your servant Moses.
7 While breaking up, we broke up with you and we haven’t kept the commandments, and the ordinances, and the judgments, which you commanded your servant Mōysē. | 7 While breaking up, we broke up with you and we haven’t kept the commandments, and the ordinances, and the judgments, which you commanded your servant Mōysē. |
8 Remember, I beseech you, the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, If you transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations.
8 Please remember the word which you commanded your servant Mōysē, saying, ‛If you break covenant with me, I will disperse you among the peoples. | 8 Please remember the word which you commanded your servant Mōysē, saying, ‛If you break covenant with me, I will disperse you among the peoples. |
9 But if you turn to me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out to the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from there, and will bring them to the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
9 But if you return to me, and keep my commandments, and do them; if your dispersion is from the extremity of the skies, from there I will gather them, and I bring them into the place which I have chosen that my name dwells there. ’ | 9 But if you return to me, and keep my commandments, and do them; if your dispersion is from the extremity of the skies, from there I will gather them, and I bring them into the place which I have chosen that my name dwells there. ’ |
10 Now these are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power, and by your strong hand.

11 Oh Lord, I beseech you, let now your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who desire to fear your name; and prosper, please, your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer.

11 No please, Lord; but let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who want to fear your name; and please prosper your servant today, and give him into compassion before this man –” Now I was wine-server to the king. | 11 No please, Lord; but let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who want to fear your name; and please prosper your servant today, and give him into compassion before this man.” Now I was wine-server to the king. |
