David Takes Consecrated Bread
1 [LM 21:2] Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest; and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said to him, Why are you alone, and no man with you?
1 [LM 21:2] And David came to Nomba to the priest Abimelech. And Abimelech was astonished to meet him and said to him, “Why is it that you are alone, and no one with you?” | 1 [LM 21:2] And David got up and left, and Jōnathan went into the city. |
2 [LM 21:3] And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has commanded me a business, and has said to me, Let no man know anything of the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you; and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.

2 [LM 21:3] And David said to the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter today and said to me, ‘Let no one know the matter about which I send you and concerning which I have charged you,’ and I have testified solemnly to the youths in the place called Faith of God, Phellani, Alemoni, | 2 [LM 21:3] And David came to Nomba to the priest Abimelech. And Abimelech was astonished to meet him and said to him, “Why is it that you are alone, and no one with you?” |
3 [LM 21:4] Now therefore what is under your hand? give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or what there is present.
3 [LM 21:4] and now if there are in your hand five loaves, give into my hand what is found.” | 3 [LM 21:4] And David said to the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter today and said to me, ‘Let no one know the matter about which I send you and concerning which I have charged you,’ and I have testified solemnly to the youths in the place called Faith of God, Phellani, Alemoni, and now if there are in your hand five loaves, give into my hand what is found.” |
4 [LM 21:5] And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under my hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.
4 [LM 21:5] And the priest answered David and said, “There are no common loaves in my hand, for there are only holy loaves; if the youths have kept themselves from a woman, then they shall eat.” | 4 [LM 21:5] And the priest answered David and said, “There are no common loaves in my hand, for there are only holy loaves; if the youths have kept themselves from a woman, then they shall eat.” |
5 [LM 21:6] And David answered the priest, and said to him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yes, though it were consecrated this day in the vessel.
5 [LM 21:6] And David answered the priest and said to him, “Indeed we have kept ourselves from a woman yesterday and the third day; when I go on an expedition all the youths have become consecrated, and this expedition is non-religious, therefore it shall be consecrated today through my equipments.” | 5 [LM 21:6] And David answered the priest and said to him, “Indeed we have kept ourselves from a woman yesterday and the third day; when I go on an expedition all the youths have become consecrated, and this expedition is non-religious, therefore it shall be consecrated today through my equipments.” |
6 [LM 21:7] So the priest gave him hallowed bread; for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before Yahweh, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.
6 [LM 21:7] And Abimelech the priest gave him the loaves of the presentation, for there was no bread there except the loaves of the presence, which are removed from the presence of the Lord to be replaced by hot bread on the day that he took them. | 6 [LM 21:7] And Abimelech the priest gave him the loaves of the presentation, for there was no bread there except the loaves of the presence, which are removed from the presence of the Lord to be replaced by hot bread on the day that he took them. |
7 [LM 21:8] Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Yahweh; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.
7 [LM 21:8] And one of the youths of Saoul was there in that day detained neessaran before the Lord, and his name was Dōēk the Syrian, tending Saoul’s mules. | 7 [LM 21:8] And one of the youths of Saoul was there in that day detained neessaran before the Lord, and his name was Dōēk the Syrian, tending Saoul’s mules. |
8 [LM 21:9] And David said to Ahimelech, And is there not here under your hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.
8 [LM 21:9] And David said to Abimelech, “See if there is a spear or sword in this place at your hand, for I have not brought my sword and my equipments in my hand, because the king’s business was in haste.” | 8 [LM 21:9] And David said to Abimelech, “See if there is a spear or sword in this place at your hand, for I have not brought my sword and my equipments in my hand, because the king’s business was in haste.” |
9 [LM 21:10] And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if you will take that, take it; for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.

9 [LM 21:10] And the priest said, “Look! the sword of Goliath the allophyle whom you killed in the valley of Ēla, and it is wrapped in a garment; if you will take this for yourself, take it, for there is none in this place except this one.” And David said, “Look! there is none like it; give it to me.” | 9 [LM 21:10] And the priest said, “Look! the sword of Goliath the allophyle whom you killed in the valley of Ēla, and it is wrapped in a garment; if you will take this for yourself, take it, for there is none in this place except this one.” And David said, “Look! there is none like it; give it to me.” |
10 [LM 21:11] And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

11 [LM 21:12] And the servants of Achish said to him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

11 [LM 21:12] And the servants of Anchous said to him, “Is this not David, the king of the land? Did the dancers not take the lead for this one, saying, ‘Saoul killed among his thousands, and David among his ten thousands’?” | 11 [LM 21:12] And the servants of Anchous said to him, “Is this not David, the king of the land? Did the dancers not take the lead for this one, saying, ‘Saoul killed among his thousands, and David among his ten thousands’?” |
12 [LM 21:13] And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

13 [LM 21:14] And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down on his beard.
13 [LM 21:14] And he changed his face before him, and he pretended in that day, and he drummed on the doors of the city and gestured with his hands and fell against the doors of the gate, and his saliva dripped down on his beard. | 13 [LM 21:14] And he changed his face before him, and he pretended in that day, and he drummed on the doors of the city and gestured with his hands and fell against the doors of the gate, and his saliva dripped down on his beard. |
14 [LM 21:15] Then said Achish to his servants, Lo, you see the man is mad; therefore then have you brought him to me?

14 [LM 21:15] And Anchous said to his servants, “Look, see an epileptic man; why did you bring him to me? | 14 [LM 21:15] And Anchous said to his servants, “Look, see an epileptic man; why did you bring him to me? |
