David and Jonathan Covenant
1 And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is my iniquity? and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?
1 And David fled from Navath in Rhama and came before Jōnathan and said, “What have I done? And what is my crime? And what have I sinned before your father that he is seeking my life?” | 1 And David fled from Navath in Rhama and came before Jōnathan and said, “What have I done? And what is my crime? And what have I sinned before your father that he is seeking my life?” |
2 And he said to him, God forbid; you shall not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will show it me; and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

2 And Jōnathan said to him, “By no means for you! You shall not die. Look! my father will not do anything either great or small and not uncover my ear; and why will my father hide this matter? This is not to be!” | 2 And Jōnathan said to him, “By no means for you! You shall not die. Look! my father will not do anything either great or small and not uncover my ear; and why will my father hide this matter? This is not to be!” |
3 And David swore moreover, and said, Your father certainly knows that I have found grace in your eyes; and he says, Don’t let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved; but truly as Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.
3 And David answered Jōnathan and said, “While knowing, your father knows that I have found favour in your eyes, and he said, ‘Do not let Jōnathan know this; he may not consent.’ But, the Lord lives, and your soul lives, that, as I said, between me and death has been filled up.” | 3 And David answered Jōnathan and said, “While knowing, your father knows that I have found favour in your eyes, and he said, ‘Do not let Jōnathan know this; he may not consent.’ But, the Lord lives, and your soul lives, that, as I said, between me and death has been filled up.” |
4 Then said Jonathan to David, Whatever your soul desires, I will even do it for you.
4 And Jōnathan said to David, “What does your soul desire, and what shall I do for you?” | 4 And Jōnathan said to David, “What does your soul desire, and what shall I do for you?” |
5 And David said to Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at food; but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field to the third day at evening.
5 And David said to Jōnathan, “Look! now, tomorrow is the new moon and seated I will not sit with the king to eat, and you will send me off, and I will hide in the plain until evening. | 5 And David said to Jōnathan, “Look! now, tomorrow is the new moon and seated I will not sit with the king to eat, and you will send me off, and I will hide in the plain until evening. |
6 If your father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city; for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.
6 If while observing, your father observes me, and you will say, ‘While asking, David asked of me to run as far as to Bethleem his city, for there is a sacrifice of days there for all the tribe.’ | 6 If while observing, your father observes me, and you will say, ‘While asking, David asked of me to run as far as to Bethleem his city, for there is a sacrifice of days there for all the tribe.’ |
7 If he say thus, It is well; your servant shall have peace; but if he be very wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.
7 If this is what he says, ‘Very well!’ there is peace for your slave, and if he should answer you harshly, know that evil has been determined by him. | 7 If this is what he says, ‘Very well!’ there is peace for your slave, and if he should answer you harshly, know that evil has been determined by him. |
8 Therefore you shall deal kindly with your servant; for you have brought your servant into a covenant of Yahweh with you: notwithstanding, if there is in me iniquity, slay me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father?
8 And you shall do mercy with your slave, because you have brought your slave into a covenant with the Lord along with yourself, and if there is iniquity in your slave, you put me to death, and why should you bring me thus to your father?” | 8 And you shall do mercy with your slave, because you have brought your slave into a covenant with the Lord along with yourself, and if there is iniquity in your slave, you put me to death, and why should you bring me thus to your father?” |
9 And Jonathan said, Far be it from you; for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come on you, then would not I tell it you?
9 And Jōnathan said, “My no means to you, for if while knowing, I know that the evil from my father had been determined to come on you. And if not, I will bring news to you to your cities.” | 9 And Jōnathan said, “My no means to you, for if while knowing, I know that the evil from my father had been determined to come on you. And if not, I will bring news to you to your cities.” |
10 Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if your father answer you roughly?
10 And David said to Jōnathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?” | 10 And David said to Jōnathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?” |
11 And Jonathan said to David, Come, and let’s go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.
11 And Jōnathan said to David, “Go, and remain in a field.” And they both went out into a field. | 11 And Jōnathan said to David, “Go, and remain in a field.” And they both went out into a field. |
12 And Jonathan said to David, Oh Yahweh Elohim of Israēl, when I have sounded my father about tomorrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there is good toward David, and I then send not to you, and show it you;
12 And Jōnathan said to David, “The Lord the God of Israēl knows that I will question my father as the third time, and look! if there is good concerning David, then I will not send to you in the field; | 12 And Jōnathan said to David, “The Lord the God of Israēl knows that I will question my father as the third time, and look! if there is good concerning David, then I will not send to you in the field; |
13 Yahweh do so and much more to Jonathan; but if it please my father to do you evil, then I will show it you, and send you away, that you may go in peace; and Yahweh be with you, as he has been with my father.
13 this is what God may do to Jōnathan, and this is what he may continue, for I will report the evils to you and uncover your ear and I will send you off, and you will depart in peace, and the Lord will be with you as he was with my father. | 13 this is what God may do to Jōnathan, and this is what he may continue, for I will report the evils to you and uncover your ear and I will send you off, and you will depart in peace, and the Lord will be with you as he was with my father. |
14 And you shall not only while yet I live show me the kindness of Yahweh, that I die not.
14 And if I am still living, you shall also do mercy with me, and if I die by death, | 14 And if I am still living, you shall also do mercy with me, and if I die by death, |
15 But also you shall not cut off your kindness from my house forever: no, not when Yahweh has cut off the enemies of David everyone from the face of the earth.
15 you shall not remove your mercy from my house for ever, and if not, when the Lord removes the enemies of David, each from the face of the land, | 15 you shall not remove your mercy from my house for ever, and if not, when the Lord removes the enemies of David, each from the face of the land, |
16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let Yahweh even require it at the hand of David’s enemies.
16 that the name of Jōnathan be removed from the house of David, and may the Lord seek out the enemies of David.” | 16 that the name of Jōnathan be removed from the house of David, and may the Lord seek out the enemies of David.” |
17 And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
17 And Jōnathan continuked still to swear to David, for he loved the soul of one who loved him. | 17 And Jōnathan continuked still to swear to David, for he loved the soul of one who loved him. |
18 Then Jonathan said to David, Tomorrow is the new moon; and you shall be missed, because your seat will be empty.
18 And Jōnathan said, “Tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be noticed, because your seat will be noticed. | 18 And Jōnathan said, “Tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be noticed, because your seat will be noticed. |
19 And when you have stayed three days, then you shall go down quickly, and come to the place where you did hide yourself when the business was in hand, and shall remain by the stone Ezel.
19 And you shall do it three times and observe and come to your place where you hid on the workday, and you will sit by that saddlebag. | 19 And you shall do it three times and observe and come to your place where you hid on the workday, and you will sit by that saddlebag. |
20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side of it, as though I shot at a mark.
20 And I will shoot three times with darts, sending them into the target. | 20 And I will shoot three times with darts, sending them into the target. |
21 And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say to the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of you, take them; then come you; for there is peace to you, and no hurt; as Yahweh lives.
21 And look! I will send the lad, saying, ‘Go, find the dart for me.’ If I say to the lad, saying, ‘Here is the dart, away from you, even here; take it’; come, for, the Lord lives, there is peace for you, and there is no word. | 21 And look! I will send the lad, saying, ‘Go, find the dart for me.’ |
22 But if I say thus to the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond you; go your way; for Yahweh has sent you away.
22 If this is what I say to the young man, ‘Here is the dart, away from you, even beyond’; go, for the Lord has sent you away. | 22 If I say to the lad, saying, ‘Here is the dart, away from you, even here; take it’; come, for, the Lord lives, there is peace for you, and there is no word. If this is what I say to the young man, ‘Here is the dart, away from you, even beyond’; go, for the Lord has sent you away. |
23 And as touching the matter which you and I have spoken of, behold, Yahweh be between you and me forever.
23 And as for the matter about which I and you have spoken, look! the Lord is a witness between me and you forever.” | 23 And as for the matter about which I and you have spoken, look! the Lord is a witness between me and you forever.” |
24 So David hid himself in the field; and when the new moon came, the king sat him down to eat food.
24 And David hides himself in a field, and the month came, and the king comes to the table to eat. | 24 And David hides himself in a field, and the month came, and the king comes to the table to eat. |
25 And the king sat on his seat, as at other times, even on a seat by the wall; and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s place was empty.
25 And the king sat on his seat, as once and again, on the seat by a wall. And he preceded Jōnathan, and Abennēr sat beside Saoul, and David’s place was under observation. | 25 And the king sat on his seat, as once and again, on the seat by a wall. And he preceded Jōnathan, and Abennēr sat beside Saoul, and David’s place was under observation. |
26 Nevertheless Saul spoke not anything that day; for he thought, Something has befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.
26 And Saoul did not say anything in that day, for he said, “A chance; he appears not to be clean because he has not purified himself.” | 26 And Saoul did not say anything in that day, for he said, “A chance; he appears not to be clean because he has not purified himself.” |
27 And it happened on the next day, which was the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty; and Saul said to Jonathan his son, Why doesn’t come the son of Jesse to food, neither yesterday, nor today?
27 And it happened on the next day, on the second day of the month, and David’s place was under observation. And Saoul said to his son Jōnathan, “Why is it that the son of Jessai has not arrived to the table, both yesterday and today?” | 27 And it happened on the next day, on the second day of the month, and David’s place was under observation. And Saoul said to his son Jōnathan, “Why is it that the son of Jessai has not arrived to the table, both yesterday and today?” |
28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem.
28 And Jōnathan answered Saoul and said to him, “David asked me to go as far as to Bethleem his city, | 28 And Jōnathan answered Saoul and said to him, “David asked me to go as far as to Bethleem his city, |
29 And he said, Let me go, please; for our family has a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he has commanded me to be there; and now, if I have found favour in your eyes, let me get away, please, and see my brothers. Therefore he doesn’t come to the king’s table.

Saul Is Angry with Jonathan
30 Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, You son of the perverse rebellious woman, I don’t know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own confusion, and to the confusion of your mother’s nakedness?
30 And Saoul w 8as greatly angry with wrath against Jōnathan, and he said to him, “You son of traitorous girls! For do I not know that you are an accomplice of the son of Jessai to your shame and to the shame of your mother’s uncovering? | 30 And Saul was exceedingly angry with Jonathan, and said to him, You son of traitorous damsels! for do I not know that you are an accomplice with the son of Jessae to your same, and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness? |
31 For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the ground, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Therefore now send and fetch him to me, for he shall surely die.
31 For during all the days which the son of Jessai lives on the land, your kingdom shall not be established. Now therefore send, take the youth, for he is a son of death.” | 31 For during all the days which the son of Jessai lives on the land, your kingdom shall not be established. Now therefore send, take the youth, for he is a son of death.” |
32 And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, Why he shall be slain? what has he done?

34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

35 And it happened in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.

36 And he said to his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

37 And when the lad came to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond you?

39 But the lad didn’t know anything: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

41 And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times; and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.
