David Protected from Saul

1 And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David.

1 And Saoul spoke to his son Jōnathan and to all his servants to put David to death. And Saoul’s son Jōnathan was very fond of David. 1 And Saoul spoke to his son Jōnathan and to all his servants to put David to death.

2 But Jonathan Saul’s son delighted much in David; and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeks to kill you: now therefore, please, be careful until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide yourself.

2 And Jōnathan told David, saying, “Saoul seeks to put you to death; therefore be on guard tomorrow morning, and hide yourself, and stay in hiding, 2 And Saoul’s son Jōnathan was very fond of David. And Jōnathan told David, saying, “Saoul seeks to put you to death; therefore be on guard tomorrow morning, and hide yourself, and stay in hiding,

3 And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will commune with my father of you; and what I see, that I will tell you.

3 and I will go out and stand beside my father in a field, where you are there, and I will speak to my father about you and see what it might be, and I will tell you.” 3 and I will go out and stand beside my father in a field, where you are there, and I will speak to my father about you and see what it might be, and I will tell you.”

4 And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him, Don’t let the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hasn’t sinned against you, and because his works have been toward you very good.

4 And Jōnathan spoke well of David to his father Saoul and said to him, “Don't let the king sin against your slave David, because he has not sinned against you, and his deeds are very good, 4 And Jōnathan spoke well of David to his father Saoul and said to him, “Don't let the king sin against your slave David, because he has not sinned against you, and his deeds are very good,

5 For he did put his life in his hand, and killed the Philistine, and Yahweh wrought a great salvation for all Israēl: you saw it, and did rejoice; therefore then will you sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

5 καὶ ἔθετο τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὸν ἀλλόφυλον, καὶ ἐποίησεν κύριος σωτηρίαν μεγάλην, καὶ πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ εἶδον καὶ ἐχάρησαν· καὶ ἵνα τί ἁμαρτάνεις εἰς αἷμα ἀθῷον θανατῶσαι τὸν Δαυὶδ δωρεάν; 5 καὶ ἔθετο τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπάταξε τὸν ἀλλόφυλον, καὶ ἐποίησε Κύριος σωτηρίαν μεγάλην, καὶ πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ εἶδον καὶ ἐχάρησαν· καὶ ἱνατί ἁμαρτάνεις εἰς αἷμα ἀθῷον θανατῶσαι τὸν Δαυὶδ δωρεάν;
5 and he put his life in his hand and struck the allophyle, and the Lord brought about a great deliverance, and all Israēl saw and rejoiced, and why do you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death without cause?” 5 and he put his life in his hand and struck the allophyle, and the Lord brought about a great deliverance, and all Israēl saw and rejoiced, and why do you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death without cause?”

6 And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan; and Saul swore, As Yahweh lives, he shall not be slain.

6 And Saoul listened to the voice of Jōnathan, and Saoul swore, saying, “The Lord lives, he shall never die!” 6 And Saoul listened to the voice of Jōnathan, and Saoul swore, saying, “The Lord lives, he shall never die!”

7 And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as in times past.

7 And Jōnathan called David and told all these words to him, and Jōnathan brought David in to Saoul, and he was in his presence as yesterday and the third day. 7 And Jōnathan called David and told all these words to him, and Jōnathan brought David in to Saoul, and he was in his presence as yesterday and the third day.

8 And there was war again; and David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and killed them with a great slaughter; and they fled from him.

8 And the war continued to be against Saoul, and David prevailed over and fought the allophyles, and he struck among them with a very great blow, and they fled from before him. 8 And the war continued to be against Saoul, and David prevailed over and fought the allophyles, and he struck among them with a very great blow, and they fled from before him.

9 And the evil spirit from Yahweh was on Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand; and David played with his hand.

9 And there came an evil spirit from God on Saoul, and he slept in his house, and a spear was in his hand, and David was strumming music with his hands, 9 And there came an evil spirit from God on Saoul, and he slept in his house, and a spear was in his hand, and David was strumming music with his hands,

10 And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin; but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall; and David fled, and escaped that night.

10 and Saoul kept seeking to strike the spear into David, and David withdrew from before Saoul, and he struck the spear into the wall, and David departed and escaped. 10 and Saoul kept seeking to strike the spear into David, and David withdrew from before Saoul, and he struck the spear into the wall, and David departed and escaped.

11 Saul also sent messengers to David’s house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning; and Michal David’s wife told him, saying, If you save not your life to night, tomorrow you shall be slain.

11 And it happened in that night that Saoul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him to put him to death in the morning. And his wife Melchol told David, saying, “If you don't save your own life this night, tomorrow you will be put to death.” 11 And it happened in that night that Saoul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him to put him to death in the morning. And his wife Melchol told David, saying, “If you don't save your own life this night, tomorrow you will be put to death.”

12 So Michal let David down through a window; and he went, and fled, and escaped.

12 And Melchol lets David down through the window, and he departed and flew away and escaped. 12 And Melchol lets David down through the window, and he departed and flew away and escaped.

13 And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats’ hair for his bolster, and covered it with a cloth.

13 And Melchol took and laid the cenotaph on the bed, and she put goats’ liver by its head and covered them with clothing. 13 And Melchol took and laid the cenotaph on the bed, and she put goats’ liver by its head and covered them with clothing.

14 And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick.

14 And Saoul sent messengers to take David, and they say he is ill. 14 And Saoul sent messengers to take David, and they say he is ill.

15 And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him.

15 And he sends for David, saying, “Bring him to me on the bed, that I may put him to death.” 15 And he sends for David, saying, “Bring him to me on the bed, that I may put him to death.”

16 And when the messengers were come in, behold, there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goats’ hair for his bolster.

16 And the messengers come, and look! the cenotaph is on the bed, and goats’ liver by its head. 16 And the messengers come, and look! the cenotaph is on the bed, and goats’ liver by its head.

17 And Saul said to Michal, Why have you deceived me so, and sent away my enemy, that he is escaped? And Michal answered Saul, He said to me, Let me go; why should I kill you?

17 καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ τῇ Μελχὸλ ἵνα τί οὕτως παρελογίσω με καὶ ἐξαπέστειλας τὸν ἐχθρόν μου καὶ διεσώθη;
17 καὶ εἶπε Σαοὺλ τῇ Μελχόλ· ἱνατί οὕτως παρελογίσω με καὶ ἐξαπέστειλας τὸν ἐχθρόν μου καὶ διεσώθη;
17 And Saoul said to Melchol, “Why have you thus deceived me and sent off my enemy, and he has escaped?” And Melchol said to Saoul, “He said, ‘Send me off, but if not, I will put you to death.’ ” 17 And Saoul said to Melchol, “Why have you thus deceived me and sent off my enemy, and he has escaped?” And Melchol said to Saoul, “He said, ‘Send me off, but if not, I will put you to death.’ ”

18 So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.

18 And David fled and escaped and came to Samouēl at Armathaim and told him all that Saoul did to him, and David and Samouēl went and settled at Navath in Rhama. 18 And David fled and escaped and came to Samouēl at Armathaim and told him all that Saoul did to him, and David and Samouēl went and settled at Navath in Rhama.

19 And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.

19 And it was told to Saoul, saying, “Look! David is at Navath in Rhama.” 19 And it was told to Saoul, saying, “Look! David is at Navath in Rhama.”

20 And Saul sent messengers to take David; and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was on the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.

20 And Saoul sent messengers to take David, and they saw the assembly of the prophets, and Samouēl stood as appointed over them, and a spirit of God came on the messengers of Saoul, and they were prophesying. 20 And Saoul sent messengers to take David, and they saw the assembly of the prophets, and Samouēl stood as appointed over them, and a spirit of God came on the messengers of Saoul, and they were prophesying.

21 And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.

21 And it was told to Saoul, and he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. And Saoul continued to send messengers the third time, and they too prophesied. 21 And it was told to Saoul, and he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. And Saoul continued to send messengers the third time, and they too prophesied.

22 Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu; and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in Ramah.

22 καὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργῇ Σαοὺλ καὶ ἐπορεύθη καὶ αὐτὸς εἰς Ἀρμαθαὶμ καὶ ἔρχεται ἕως τοῦ φρέατος τοῦ ἅλω τοῦ ἐν τῷ Σεφὶ καὶ ἠρώτησεν καὶ εἶπεν ποῦ Σαμουὴλ καὶ Δαυίδ;
22 καὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργῇ Σαοὺλ καὶ ἐπορεύθης καὶ αὐτὸς εἰς Ἀρμαθαὶμ καὶ ἔρχεται ἕως τοῦ φρέατος τοῦ ἅλω τοῦ ἐν τῷ Σεφὶ καὶ ἠρώτησε καὶ εἶπε· ποῦ Σαμουὴλ καὶ Δαυίδ;
22 And Saoul was angry with wrath, and he also went to Armathaim, and he came to the well of the threshing floor that is in Sephi, and he asked and said, “Where are Samouēl and David?” And they said, “Look! at Navath in Rhama.” 22 And Saoul was angry with wrath, and he also went to Armathaim, and he came to the well of the threshing floor that is in Sephi, and he asked and said, “Where are Samouēl and David?” And they said, “Look! at Navath in Rhama.”

23 And he went to that place to Naioth in Ramah; and the Spirit of God was on him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

23 And he went from there toward Navath in Rhama, and a spirit of God also came on him, and as he was going, he was prophesying until he came to Navath in Rhama. 23 And he went from there toward Navath in Rhama, and a spirit of God also came on him, and as he was going, he was prophesying until he came to Navath in Rhama.

24 And he stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Why they say, Is Saul also among the prophets?

24 καὶ ἐξεδύσατο τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπροφήτευσεν ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν καὶ ἔπεσεν γυμνὸς ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην καὶ ὅλην τὴν νύκτα· διὰ τοῦτο ἔλεγον εἰ καὶ Σαοὺλ ἐν προφήταις; 24 καὶ ἐξεδύσατο τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπροφήτευσεν ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν καὶ ἔπεσε γυμνὸς ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην καὶ ὅλην τὴν νύκτα· διὰ τοῦτο ἔλεγον· εἰ καὶ Σαοὺλ ἐν προφήταις;
24 And he stripped off his clothes, and he prophesied before them and fell naked all that day and the whole night. Therefore they were saying, “Is Saoul also among the prophets?” 24 And he stripped off his clothes, and he prophesied before them and fell naked all that day and the whole night. Therefore they were saying, “Is Saoul also among the prophets?”
