Jonathan and David
1 And it happened, when he had made an end of speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
1 N/A | 1 And it happened when he had finished speaking to Saoul, that the soul of Jōnathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jōnathan loved him as his own soul. |
2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.
2 N/A | 2 And Saoul took him in that day, and did not allow him to return to his father’s house. |
3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
3 N/A | 3 And Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul. |
4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.
4 N/A | 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of his outer garment, and gave it to David, and his cloak and his sword and his bow, and his belt. |
5 And David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely; and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
5 N/A | 5 And David went out wherever Saoul sent him, he was wise, and Saoul appointed him over the men of war, and he was pleasing in the eyes of all the people, and also in the eyes of Saoul’s slaves. |
6 And it happened as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israēl, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music.
6 And the dancers came to meet David out of all the cities of Israēl, with tambourine and with rejoicing and with cymbals. | 6 And the dancers came to meet David out of all the cities of Israēl, with tambourine and with rejoicing and with cymbals. |
7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
7 And the women began and were saying, “Saoul killed among his thousands, and David among his ten thousands.” | 7 And the women began and were saying, “Saoul killed among his thousands, and David among his ten thousands.” |
8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands; and what can he have more but the kingdom?
8 And the matter appeared evil in the eyes of Saoul concerning this word, and he said, “To David they have given the ten thousands, and to me they given the thousands.” | 8 And the matter appeared evil in the eyes of Saoul concerning this word, and he said, “To David they have given the ten thousands, and to me they given the thousands.” |
9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.
9 And Saoul kept eyeing David with suspicion from that day and beyond. | 9 And Saoul kept eyeing David with suspicion from that day and beyond. |
Saul Turns against David
10 And it happened on the next day, that the evil spirit from God came on Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house; and David played with his hand, as at other times; and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand.

10 N/A | 10 And it happened on the next day that an evil spirit from God fell on Saoul, and he prophesied in the midst of his house. And David was strumming music with his hand, according to every day. And Saoul’s spear was in his hand. |
11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.
11 N/A | 11 And Saoul took his spear and said, “I will strike David even to the wall.” But David escaped twice from his presence. |
12 And Saul was afraid of David, because Yahweh was with him, and was departed from Saul.
12 And Saoul was afraid from before David, | 12 And Saoul was afraid from before David, |
13 Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over 1000; and he went out and came in before the people.
13 and he removed him from him and appointed him an officer of a thousand for himself, and he kept going out and coming in before the people. | 13 and he removed him from him and appointed him an officer of a thousand for himself, and he kept going out and coming in before the people. |
14 And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and Yahweh was with him.
14 And David was prudent in all his ways, and the Lord was with him. | 14 And David was prudent in all his ways, and the Lord was with him. |
15 Therefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.
15 And Saoul saw how he acted very prudently, and he was afraid from before him. | 15 And Saoul saw how he acted very prudently, and he was afraid from before him. |
16 But all Israēl and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.
16 And all Israēl and Jouda loved David, because he was going out and coming in from before the people. | 16 And all Israēl and Jouda loved David, because he was going out and coming in from before the people. |
17 And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give you to wife: only be valiant for me, and fight Yahweh’s battles. For Saul said, Don’t let my hand be on him, but let the hand of the Philistines be on him.

17 N/A | 17 And Saoul said to David, “Look! my elder daughter Merob, I will give her to you for a wife, only be a mighty son for me and fight the wars of the Lord.” And Saoul said, “Let not my hand be on him, but the hand of the allophyles shall be on him.” |
18 And David said to Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father’s family in Israēl, that I should be son-in-law to the king?
18 N/A | 18 And David said to Saoul, “Who am I, and what is the life of my father’s relatives in Israēl, that I should be the king’s son-in-law?” |
19 But it happened at the time when Merab Saul’s daughter should have been given to David, that she was given to Adriel the Meholathite to wife.
19 N/A | 19 And it happened at the time when Merob, Saoul’s daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given to Esriēl the Mothulathite for a wife. |
David Marries Saul’s Daughter
20 And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David; and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
20 And Saoul’s daughter Melchol loved David, and Saoul was told, and it was correct in his eyes. | 20 And Saoul’s daughter Melchol loved David, and Saoul was told, and it was correct in his eyes. |
21 And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Therefore Saul said to David, You shall this day be my son-in-law in the one of the twain.

21 And Saoul said, “I will give her to him, and she will be a stumbling block for him.” And the hand of the allophyles was against Saoul, | 21 And Saoul said, “I will give her to him, and she will be a stumbling block for him.” And the hand of the allophyles was against Saoul, |
22 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you: now therefore be the king’s son in law.
22 and Saoul commanded his servants, saying, “Speak to David secretly, saying, ‘Look! the king wants you, and all his servants love you, and as for you, become the king’s son-in-law.’ ” | 22 and Saoul commanded his servants, saying, “Speak to David secretly, saying, ‘Look! the king wants you, and all his servants love you, and as for you, become the king’s son-in-law.’ ” |
23 And Saul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king’s son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

23 And Saoul’s servants spoke these words in the hearing of David. And David said, “Does it seem light in your eyes to become the king’s son-in-law? And as for me, I am a humble man and of not honored.” | 23 And Saoul’s servants spoke these words in the hearing of David. And David said, “Does it seem light in your eyes to become the king’s son-in-law? And as for me, I am a humble man and of not honored.” |
24 And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spoke David.
24 And the servants of Saoul reported to him according to these things that David spoke. | 24 And the servants of Saoul reported to him according to these things that David spoke. |
25 And Saul said, Thus you shall say to David, The king desires none dowry, but 100 foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
25 And Saoul said, “This is what you shall say to David, ‘The king doesn’t want to punish the king’s enemies with a present, except with 100 foreskins of the allophyles.’ ” And Saoul counted on tossing him into the hands of the allophyles. | 25 And Saoul said, “This is what you shall say to David, ‘The king doesn’t want to punish the king’s enemies with a present, except with 100 foreskins of the allophyles.’ ” And Saoul counted on tossing him into the hands of the allophyles. |
26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son in law; and the days were not expired.
26 And the servants of Saoul told David these words, and the word was correct in David’s eyes to be the king’s son-in-law. | 26 And the servants of Saoul told David these words, and the word was correct in David’s eyes to be the king’s son-in-law. |
27 Therefore David arose and went, he and his men, and killed of the Philistines 200 men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king’s son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

28 And Saul saw and knew that Yahweh was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him.

30 Then the princes of the Philistines went forth; and it happened, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
