The Priests Slain at Nob

1 David therefore departed from there, and escaped to the cave Adullam; and when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down to that place to him.

1 And David left there and escaped and came to the Odollam cave. And his brothers and his father’s house heard and went down there to him. 1 And David left there and escaped and came to the Odollam cave. And his brothers and his father’s house heard and went down there to him.

2 And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented, gathered themselves to him; and he became a captain over them; and there were with him about 400 men.

2 And every one in distress and every one in debt and every one troubled in soul were gathering to him, and he was leader over them, and there were with him about 400 men. 2 And every one in distress and every one in debt and every one troubled in soul were gathering to him, and he was leader over them, and there were with him about 400 men.

3 And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, please, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.

3 And David went from there to Massēpha of Mōab and said to the king of Mōab, “Please let my father and my mother be with you until I know what God will do for me.” 3 And David went from there to Massēpha of Mōab and said to the king of Mōab, “Please let my father and my mother be with you until I know what God will do for me.”

4 And he brought them before the king of Moab; and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold.

4 And he persuaded the person of the king of Mōab, and they were dwelling with him all the days that David was in the fortification. 4 And he persuaded the person of the king of Mōab, and they were dwelling with him all the days that David was in the fortification.

5 And the prophet Gad said to David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get you into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.

5 And the prophet Gad said to David, “Don't remain in the fortress; leave, and you shall enter into the land of Jouda.” And David left and went and settled in the city of Sarich. 5 And the prophet Gad said to David, “Don't remain in the fortress; leave, and you shall enter into the land of Jouda.” And David left and went and settled in the city of Sarich.

6 When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;)

6 And Saoul heard that David had been recognized, and the men who were with him, and Saoul was sitting on the hill below the cultivated field which is in Rhama, and his spear in his hand, and all his servants stood beside him. 6 And Saoul heard that David had been recognized, and the men who were with him, and Saoul was sitting on the hill below the cultivated field which is in Rhama, and his spear in his hand, and all his servants stood beside him.

7 Then Saul said to his servants that stood about him, Hear now, you Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give everyone of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;

7 καὶ εἶπεν Σαοὺλ πρὸς τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ τοὺς παρεστηκότας αὐτῷ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἀκούσατε δή, υἱοὶ Βενιαμίν· εἰ ἀληθῶς πᾶσιν ὑμῖν δώσει υἱὸς Ἰεσσαὶ ἀγροὺς καὶ ἀμπελῶνας καὶ πάντας ὑμᾶς τάξει ἑκατοντάρχους καὶ χιλιάρχους; 7 καὶ εἶπε Σαοὺλ πρὸς τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ τοὺς παρεστηκότας αὐτῷ· ἀκούσατε δὴ υἱοὶ Βενιαμίν· εἰ ἀληθῶς πᾶσιν ὑμῖν δώσει υἱὸς Ἰεσσαὶ ἀγροὺς καὶ ἀμπελῶνας καὶ πάντας ὑμᾶς τάξει ἑκατοντάρχους καὶ χιλιάρχους;
7 And Saoul said to his servants who stood beside him and said to them, “Please listen, sons of Benjamin, if the son of Jessai will truly give every one of you fields and vineyards and make you all officers of hundreds and officers of thousands! 7 And Saoul said to his servants who stood beside him and said to them, “Please listen, sons of Benjamin, if the son of Jessai will truly give every one of you fields and vineyards and make you all officers of hundreds and officers of thousands!

8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that shows me that my son has made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you who is sorry for me, or shows to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

8 For you are all in collusion against me, and there is no one who uncovers my ear when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jessai, and there is no one of you who feels sorry for me or uncovers my ear because my son stirred up my slave against me as an enemy, as this day.” 8 For you are all in collusion against me, and there is no one who uncovers my ear when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jessai, and there is no one of you who feels sorry for me or uncovers my ear because my son stirred up my slave against me as an enemy, as this day.”

9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

9 And Dōēk the Syrian who was in charge of Saoul’s mules answered and said, “I have seen the son of Jessai coming to Nomba to Abimelech son of Achitōb the priest, 9 And Dōēk the Syrian who was in charge of Saoul’s mules answered and said, “I have seen the son of Jessai coming to Nomba to Abimelech son of Achitōb the priest,

10 And he inquired of Yahweh for him, and gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.

10 and he was inquiring by God for him, and he gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliad the allophyle.” 10 and he was inquiring by God for him, and he gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the allophyle.”

11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob; and they came all of them to the king.

11 And the king sent to call Abimelech son of Achitōb and all the sons of his father, the priests who were at Nomba, and all of them came to the king. 11 And the king sent to call Abimelech son of Achitōb and all the sons of his father, the priests who were at Nomba, and all of them came to the king.

12 And Saul said, Hear now, you son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.

12 And Saoul said, “Please listen, son of Achitōb.” And he said, “Here I am, speak, sir.” 12 And Saoul said, “Please listen, son of Achitōb.” And he said, “Here I am, speak, sir.”

13 And Saul said to him, Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

13 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Σαοὺλ ἵνα τί συνέθου κατ’ ἐμοῦ σὺ καὶ υἱὸς Ἰεσσαὶ δοῦναί σὲ αὐτῷ ἄρτον καὶ ῥομφαίαν καὶ ἐρωτᾶν αὐτῷ διὰ τοῦ θεοῦ θέσθαι αὐτὸν ἐπ’ ἐμὲ εἰς ἐχθρὸν ὡς ἡμέρα αὕτη; 13 καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ Σαούλ· ἱνατί συνέθου κατ’ ἐμοῦ σὺ καὶ υἱὸς Ἰεσσαὶ δοῦναί σε αὐτῷ ἄρτον καὶ ῥομφαίαν καὶ ἐρωτᾶν αὐτῷ διὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ θέσθαι αὐτὸν ἐπ’ ἐμὲ εἰς ἐχθρόν, ὡς ἡμέρα αὕτη;
13 And Saoul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jessai, that you gave him bread and a sword and that you ask through God for him, to set him against me as an enemy, as this day?” 13 And Saoul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jessai, that you gave him bread and a sword and that you ask through God for him, to set him against me as an enemy, as this day?”

14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all your servants as David, which is the king’s son in law, and goes at your bidding, and is honourable in your house?

14 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη τῷ βασιλεῖ καὶ εἶπεν καὶ τίς ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς δούλοις σου ὡς Δαυὶδ πιστὸς καὶ γαμβρὸς τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ἄρχων παντὸς παραγγέλματός σου καὶ ἔνδοξος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ σου; 14 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη τῷ βασιλεῖ καὶ εἶπε· καὶ τίς ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς δούλοις σου ὡς Δαυὶδ πιστὸς καὶ γαμβρὸς τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ἄρχων παντὸς παραγγέλματός σου καὶ ἔνδοξος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ σου;
14 And he answered the king and said, “And who among all your slaves is like David, faithful and the king’s son-in-law and administrator of your every order and honored in your house? 14 And he answered the king and said, “And who among all your slaves is like David, faithful and the king’s son-in-law and administrator of your every order and honored in your house?

15 Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? be it far from me: don’t let the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for your servant didn’t knowing of all this, less or more.

15 σήμερον ἦργμαι ἐρωτᾶν αὐτῷ διὰ τοῦ θεοῦ;
15 σήμερον ἦργμαι ἐρωτᾶν αὐτῷ διὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ;
15 Have I begun today to ask by God for him? By no means! Don't let the king impute anything to his slave or to the whole of my father’s house, for your slave knew nothing of all this matter, small or large.” 15 Have I begun today to ask by God for him? By no means! Don't let the king impute anything to his slave or to the whole of my father’s house, for your slave knew nothing of all this matter, small or large.”

16 And the king said, You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you, and all your father’s house.

16 And Saoul the king said, “You shall die by death, Abimelech, you and all your father’s house.” 16 And Saoul the king said, “You shall die by death, Abimelech, you and all your father’s house.”

17 And the king said to the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of Yahweh; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and didn’t show it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall on the priests of Yahweh.

17 And the king said to the runners who stood around him, “Draw near, and put to death the priests of the Lord, because their hand is with David and because they knew that he was fleeing and they didn't uncover my ear.” And the servants of the king were not willing to bring their hands to attack the priests of the Lord. 17 And the king said to the runners who stood around him, “Draw near, and put to death the priests of the Lord, because their hand is with David and because they knew that he was fleeing and they didn't uncover my ear.” And the servants of the king were not willing to bring their hands to attack the priests of the Lord.

18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn you, and fall on the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell on the priests, and killed on that day 85 persons that did wear a linen ephod.

18 And the king said to Dōēk, “You, turn, and attack the priests.” And Dōēk the Syrian turned and put to death the priests of the Lord in that day, 305 men, all carrying an ephod. 18 And the king said to Dōēk, “You, turn, and attack the priests.” And Dōēk the Syrian turned and put to death the priests of the Lord in that day, 305 men, all carrying an ephod.

19 And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

19 And Nomba, the city of the priests, he struck with the edge of the sword: from man up to woman, from child up to infant, and calf and donkey and sheep. 19 And Nomba, the city of the priests, he struck with the edge of the sword: from man up to woman, from child up to infant, and calf and donkey and sheep.

20 And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.

20 And one son of Abimelech son of Achitōb escaped, and his name was Abiathar, and he fled after David. 20 And one son of Abimelech son of Achitōb escaped, and his name was Abiathar, and he fled after David.

21 And Abiathar showed David that Saul had slain Yahweh’s priests.

21 And Abiathar told David that Saoul put to death all the priests of the Lord. 21 And Abiathar told David that Saoul put to death all the priests of the Lord.

22 And David said to Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father’s house.

22 And David said to Abiathar, “I knew in that day that Dōēk the Syrian; mthat telling he would tell Saoul. I am responsible for the lives of your father’s house. 22 And David said to Abiathar, “I knew in that day that Dōēk the Syrian; mthat telling he would tell Saoul. I am responsible for the lives of your father’s house.

23 Abide you with me, fear not; for he who seeks my life seeks your life; but with me you shall be in safeguard.

23 Stay with me; don't be afraid; for where I shall seek a place for my life, I shall also seek one for your life, for you are guarded with me.” 23 Stay with me; don't be afraid; for where I shall seek a place for my life, I shall also seek one for your life, for you are guarded with me.”
