David Delivers Keilah
1 Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshing floors.
1 And it was told to David, saying, “Look! the allophyles are fighting in Keila, and they are plundering, they are trampling the threshing floors.” | 1 And it was told to David, saying, “Look! the allophyles are fighting in Keila, and they are plundering, they are trampling the threshing floors.” |
2 Therefore David inquired of Yahweh, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And Yahweh said to David, Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.

3 And David’s men said to him, “Look! we are afraid here in Judea, and how will it be if we go to Keila? We shall enter into the spoils of the allophyles.” | 3 And David’s men said to him, “Look! we are afraid here in Judea, and how will it be if we go to Keila? We shall enter into the spoils of the allophyles.” |
4 Then David inquired of Yahweh yet again. And Yahweh answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.
4 And David continued to inquire again by the Lord, and the Lord answered him and said to him, “Arise, and go down to Keila, because I am giving the allophyles into your hands.” | 4 And David continued to inquire again by the Lord, and the Lord answered him and said to him, “Arise, and go down to Keila, because I am giving the allophyles into your hands.” |
5 So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
5 And David went, and the men who were with him, to Keila and fought with the allophyles, and they fled from before him, and he carried away their livestock and struck a great blow among them. And David rescued the inhabitants of Keila. | 5 And David went, and the men who were with him, to Keila and fought with the allophyles, and they fled from before him, and he carried away their livestock and struck a great blow among them. And David rescued the inhabitants of Keila. |
6 And it happened, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.
6 And it happened, when Abiathar son of Abimelech fled to David, that he came down with David to Keila having an ephod in his hand. | 6 And it happened, when Abiathar son of Abimelech fled to David, that he came down with David to Keila having an ephod in his hand. |
7 And it was told Saul that David came to Keilah. And Saul said, God has delivered him into my hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that has gates and bars.
7 And it was told Saoul that David had come to Keila, and Saoul said, “God has sold him into my hands, for he has shut himself in having entered a city of doors and bars.” | 7 And it was told Saoul that David had come to Keila, and Saoul said, “God has sold him into my hands, for he has shut himself in having entered a city of doors and bars.” |
8 And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.
8 And Saoul summoned all the people to war to go down to Keila to besiege David and his men. | 8 And Saoul summoned all the people to war to go down to Keila to besiege David and his men. |
9 And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring here the ephod.
9 And David learned that Saoul was not keeping quiet about his evil, and David said to the priest Abiathar, “Bring the ephod of the Lord.” | 9 And David learned that Saoul was not keeping quiet about his evil, and David said to the priest Abiathar, “Bring the ephod of the Lord.” |
10 Then said David, Oh Yahweh Elohim of Israēl, your servant has certainly heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
10 And David said, “Oh Lord, the God of Israēl, while hearing your slave has heard that Saoul seeks to come to Keila to destroy the city because of me. | 10 And David said, “Oh Lord, the God of Israēl, while hearing your slave has heard that Saoul seeks to come to Keila to destroy the city because of me. |
11 Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? Oh Yahweh Elohim of Israēl, I beseech you, tell your servant. And Yahweh said, He will come down.

11 Will it be shut up? And now, will Saoul come down as your slave has heard? Oh Lord, the God of Israēl, tell your slave.” And the Lord said, “It will be shut up.” | 11 Will it be shut up? And now, will Saoul come down as your slave has heard? Oh Lord, the God of Israēl, tell your slave.” And the Lord said, “It will be shut up.” |
12 Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And Yahweh said, They will deliver you up.

12 N/A | 12 Then David said, Will they of Keila betray me and my men into the hands of Saul? Then the Lord said, They will betray. |
13 Then David and his men, which were about 600, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went wherever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he forbear to go forth.
13 And David arose, and the men who were with him, about 400, and they departed from Keila, and they kept going wherever they went, and it was told Saoul that David had escaped from Keila, and he ceased to go out. | 13 And David arose, and the men who were with him, about 400, and they departed from Keila, and they kept going wherever they went, and it was told Saoul that David had escaped from Keila, and he ceased to go out. |
14 And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
14 And David settled in the wilderness in Maserem at the narrows, and he sat in the wilderness in Mount Ziph in the dry land, and Saoul kept seeking him all the days, and the Lord did not give him into his hands. | 14 And David settled in the wilderness in Maserem at the narrows, and he sat in the wilderness in Mount Ziph in the dry land, and Saoul kept seeking him all the days, and the Lord did not give him into his hands. |
Saul Pursues David
15 And David saw that Saul came out to seek his life; and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood.
15 And David saw that Saoul is coming out to seek David, and David was in the dry mountain in New Ziph. | 15 And David saw that Saoul is coming out to seek David, and David was in the dry mountain in New Ziph. |
16 And Jonathan Saul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
16 And Saoul’s son Jōnathan arose and departed to David at New and strengthened his hands in the Lord. | 16 And Saoul’s son Jōnathan arose and departed to David at New and strengthened his hands in the Lord. |
17 And he said to him, Fear not; for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you; and you shall be king over Israēl, and I shall be next to you; and that also Saul my father knows.
17 And he said to him, “Don't be afraid, for the hand of my father Saoul shall not find you, and you shall be king over Israēl, and I shall be second to you, and my father Saoul knows that this is so.” | 17 And he said to him, “Don't be afraid, for the hand of my father Saoul shall not find you, and you shall be king over Israēl, and I shall be second to you, and my father Saoul knows that this is so.” |
18 And they two made a covenant before Yahweh; and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.

19 Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doesn’t David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon?

20 Now therefore, Oh king, come down according to all the desire of your soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand.
20 And now, as for everything that is on the king’s soul for a descent, let him descend to us; they have shut him up into the king’s hands.” | 20 And now, as for everything that is on the king’s soul for a descent, let him descend to us; they have shut him up into the king’s hands.” |
21 And Saul said, Blessed be of Yahweh; for you have mercy on me.
21 And Saoul said to them, “May you be blessed to the Lord, for you were sorry for me. | 21 And Saoul said to them, “May you be blessed to the Lord, for you were sorry for me. |
22 Go, please, prepare yet, and know and see his place where his haunt is, and who has seen him there; for it is told me that he deals very craftily.
22 Please go, and prepare once more, and know his place where his foot will be, quickly there where you said, lest he be cunning. | 22 Please go, and prepare once more, and know his place where his foot will be, quickly there where you said, lest he be cunning. |
23 See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hides himself, and come you again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you; and it will happen, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.

24 And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul; but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain on the south of Jeshimon.
24 And the Ziphaites rose up and departed ahead of Saoul, and David and his men were in the Maan wilderness in the evening to the right of Jessaimoun. | 24 And the Ziphaites rose up and departed ahead of Saoul, and David and his men were in the Maan wilderness in the evening to the right of Jessaimoun. |
25 Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David; therefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.

25 And Saoul departed, and his men, to search for him, and they reported to David, and he went down to the rock that is in the wilderness of Maan. And Saoul heard and pursued after David into the wilderness of Maan. | 25 And Saoul departed, and his men, to search for him, and they reported to David, and he went down to the rock that is in the wilderness of Maan. And Saoul heard and pursued after David into the wilderness of Maan. |
26 And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain; and David made haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men surrounded David and his men all around to take them.
26 And Saoul and his men are going on one side of this mountain, and David and his men were on the other side of this mountain. And David was sheltering himself to depart from before Saoul, and Saoul and his men encamped against David and his men to capture them. | 26 And Saoul and his men are going on one side of this mountain, and David and his men were on the other side of this mountain. And David was sheltering himself to depart from before Saoul, and Saoul and his men encamped against David and his men to capture them. |
27 But there came a messenger to Saul, saying, Haste you, and come; for the Philistines have invaded the land.
