David Spares Saul’s Life
1 [LM 24:2] And it happened, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.
1 [LM 24:2] And it happened, when Saoul returned from after the allophyles, that it was told him, saying, “David is in the wilderness of Engaddi.” | 1 [LM 24:2] And it happened, when Saoul returned from after the allophyles, that it was told him, saying, “David is in the wilderness of Engaddi.” |
2 [LM 24:3] Then Saul took 3000 chosen men out of all Israēl, and went to seek David and his men on the rocks of the wild goats.
2 [LM 24:3] And he took with him 3000 chosen men out of all Israēl and went to search for David and his men in front of Sadaiem. | 2 [LM 24:3] And he took with him 3000 chosen men out of all Israēl and went to search for David and his men in front of Sadaiem. |
3 [LM 24:4] And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet; and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
3 [LM 24:4] And he came to the flocks of herds that were beside the road, and a cave was there, and Saoul went in to prepare himself, and David and his men were sitting in the inner part of the cave. | 3 [LM 24:4] And he came to the flocks of herds that were beside the road, and a cave was there, and Saoul went in to prepare himself, and David and his men were sitting in the inner part of the cave. |
4 [LM 24:5] And the men of David said to him, Behold the day of which Yahweh said to you, Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it shall seem good to you. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe privately.

4 [LM 24:5] And David’s men said to him, “Look! this is the day of which the Lord spoke to you to deliver your enemy into your hands, and you shall do to him as is good in your eyes.” And David arose and stealthily removed the wing of Saoul’s double cloak. | 4 [LM 24:5] And David’s men said to him, “Look! this is the day of which the Lord spoke to you to deliver your enemy into your hands, and you shall do to him as is good in your eyes.” And David arose and stealthily removed the wing of Saoul’s double cloak. |
5 [LM 24:6] And it happened afterward, that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.
5 [LM 24:6] And it happened after these things that David’s heart struck him, because he had removed the wing of his double cloak. | 5 [LM 24:6] And it happened after these things that David’s heart struck him, because he had removed the wing of his double cloak. |
6 [LM 24:7] And he said to his men, Yahweh forbid that I should do this thing to my master, Yahweh’s anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of Yahweh.
6 [LM 24:7] And David said to his men, “By no means is it to me from the Lord, if I shall do this thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, to bring my hand on him, for this one is the Lord’s anointed.” | 6 [LM 24:7] And David said to his men, “By no means is it to me from the Lord, if I shall do this thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, to bring my hand on him, for this one is the Lord’s anointed.” |
7 [LM 24:8] So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

7 [LM 24:8] And David persuaded his men with words and did not allow them to get up to put Saoul to death. And Saoul got up and went down to the road. | 7 [LM 24:8] And David persuaded his men with words and did not allow them to get up to put Saoul to death. And Saoul got up and went down to the road. |
8 [LM 24:9] David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.
8 [LM 24:9] And David got up after him out of the cave, and David shouted after Saoul, saying, “My master king!” And Saoul looked behind him, and David bowed with his face to the ground and did obeisance to him. | 8 [LM 24:9] And David got up after him out of the cave, and David shouted after Saoul, saying, “My master king!” And Saoul looked behind him, and David bowed with his face to the ground and did obeisance to him. |
9 [LM 24:10] And David said to Saul, Why hear you men’s words, saying, Behold, David seeks your hurt?
9 [LM 24:10] And David said to Saoul, “Why do you listen to the words of the people, saying, ‘Look! David seeks your life’? | 9 [LM 24:10] And David said to Saoul, “Why do you listen to the words of the people, saying, ‘Look! David seeks your life’? |
10 [LM 24:11] Behold, this day your eyes have seen how that Yahweh had delivered you today into my hand in the cave; and some bade me kill you; but my eye spared you; and I said, I won’t put forth my hand against my lord; for he is Yahweh’s anointed.
10 [LM 24:11] Look! in this day, your eyes have seen how the Lord gave you today into my hand in the cave, and I was not willing to kill you, and I spared you and said, ‘I will not bring my hand against my master; because this one is the Lord’s anointed.’ | 10 [LM 24:11] Look! in this day, your eyes have seen how the Lord gave you today into my hand in the cave, and I was not willing to kill you, and I spared you and said, ‘I will not bring my hand against my master; because this one is the Lord’s anointed.’ |
11 [LM 24:12] Moreover, my father, see, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe and didn’t kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I haven’t sinned against you; yet you hunt my soul to take it.

11 [LM 24:12] And look! the wing of your double cloak is in my hand; I have removed the wing, and I have not killed you, and know, and see today that there is no evil in my hand, nor impiety and rebellion. And I have not sinned against you, and you are binding my life to take it. | 11 [LM 24:12] And look! the wing of your double cloak is in my hand; I have removed the wing, and I have not killed you, and know, and see today that there is no evil in my hand, nor impiety and rebellion. And I have not sinned against you, and you are binding my life to take it. |
12 [LM 24:13] Yahweh judge between me and you, and Yahweh avenge me of you; but my hand shall not be on you.
12 [LM 24:13] May the Lord judge between me and you, and may the Lord avenge me on you, and my hand shall not be on you, | 12 [LM 24:13] May the Lord judge between me and you, and may the Lord avenge me on you, and my hand shall not be on you, |
13 [LM 24:14] As says the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceeds from the wicked; but my hand shall not be on you.
13 [LM 24:14] as the old proverb says, ‘Out of the lawless will come forth error,’ and my hand shall not be on you. | 13 [LM 24:14] as the old proverb says, ‘Out of the lawless will come forth error,’ and my hand shall not be on you. |
14 [LM 24:15] After whom is the king of Israēl come out? after whom do you pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

14 [LM 24:15] And now after whom do you come out Oh king of Israēl? After whom do you pursue? After a dead dog and after one flea. | 14 [LM 24:15] And now after whom do you come out Oh king of Israēl? After whom do you pursue? After a dead dog and after one flea. |
15 [LM 24:16] Yahweh therefore be judge, and judge between me and you, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand.

16 [LM 24:17] And it happened, when David had made an end of speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, Is this your voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.

16 [LM 24:17] And it happened, when David had finished speaking these words to Saoul, that Saoul said, “Is this your voice, my child David?” and Saoul lifted up his voice and wept. | 16 [LM 24:17] And it happened, when David had finished speaking these words to Saoul, that Saoul said, “Is this your voice, my child David?” and Saoul lifted up his voice and wept. |
17 [LM 24:18] And he said to David, You are more righteous than I; for you have rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded you evil.

19 [LM 24:20] For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? therefore Yahweh reward you good for that you have done to me this day.
19 [LM 24:20] and that if one should find his enemy in distress and should send him out on a good way, then the Lord will repay him good as you have done today. | 19 [LM 24:20] and that if one should find his enemy in distress and should send him out on a good way, then the Lord will repay him good as you have done today. |
20 [LM 24:21] And now, behold, I know well that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israēl shall be established in your hand.

22 [LM 24:23] And David swore to Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men got them up to the hold.
