1 And Samouēl died, and all Israēl assembled and mourned him, and they buried him at his home in Armathaim. And David got up and went down to the wilderness of Maan. | 1 And Samouēl died, and all Israēl assembled and mourned him, and they buried him at his home in Armathaim. And David got up and went down to the wilderness of Maan. |
Nabal and Abigail
2 And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had 3000 sheep, and 1000 goats; and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.
2 And there was a man in Maan, and his flocks were in Karmēl, and the man was very great, and he had 3000 sheep and 1000 goats, and it happened when he was shearing his flock in Karmēl. | 2 And there was a man in Maan, and his flocks were in Karmēl, and the man was very great, and he had 3000 sheep and 1000 goats, and it happened when he was shearing his flock in Karmēl. |
3 Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail; and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance; but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.
3 And the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigaia, and his wife was good at understanding and very beautiful in appearance, and the man was surly and evil in his businesses, and the man was dog-like. | 3 And the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigaia, and his wife was good at understanding and very beautiful in appearance, and the man was surly and evil in his businesses, and the man was dog-like. |
4 And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal did shear his sheep.
4 And in the wilderness, David heard that Nabal the Karmēlite was shearing his flock, | 4 And in the wilderness, David heard that Nabal the Karmēlite was shearing his flock, |
5 And David sent out ten young men, and David said to the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name.
5 and David sent ten youths and said to the youths, “Go up to Karmēl, and go to Nabal, and ask him in my name regarding peace, | 5 and David sent ten youths and said to the youths, “Go up to Karmēl, and go to Nabal, and ask him in my name regarding peace, |
6 And thus you shall say to him who lives in prosperity, Peace be both to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have.
6 and you shall say this: ‘To good times; may you be in good health and your house, and all that you have be in good health! | 6 and you shall say this: ‘To good times; may you be in good health and your house, and all that you have be in good health! |
7 And now I have heard that you have shearers: now your shepherds which were with us, we don’t hurt them, neither was there anything missing to them, all the while they were in Carmel.
7 And now, look! I have heard that they are shearing for you; now your shepherds who were with us in the wilderness, and we did not hinder them and did not demand anything of them, all the days they were in Karmēl. | 7 And now, look! I have heard that they are shearing for you; now your shepherds who were with us in the wilderness, and we did not hinder them and did not demand anything of them, all the days they were in Karmēl. |
8 Ask your young men, and they will show you. Therefore let the young men find favour in your eyes; for we come in a good day: give, please, whatever comes to your hand to your servants, and to your son David.

10 And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.

10 and Nabal answered David’s servants and said, “Who is David? And who is the son of Jessai? Slaves have been multiplied today, when they are breaking away each from before his master. | 10 and Nabal answered David’s servants and said, “Who is David? And who is the son of Jessai? Slaves have been multiplied today, when they are breaking away each from before his master. |
11 Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men, whom I don’t know where they are from?

12 So David’s young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all those sayings.
12 And David’s youths turned away on their way and returned and came and told David according to these words. | 12 And David’s youths turned away on their way and returned and came and told David according to these words. |
13 And David said to his men, Gird you on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword; and there went up after David about 400 men; and 200 abode by the stuff.
13 And David said to his men, “Each strap on his sword!” and about 400 men went up after David, and the 200 remained with the baggage. | 13 And David said to his men, “Each strap on his sword!” and about 400 men went up after David, and the 200 remained with the baggage. |
14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed on them.
14 And one of the youths told Abigaia, Nabal’s wife, saying, “Look! David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he turned away from them. | 14 And one of the youths told Abigaia, Nabal’s wife, saying, “Look! David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he turned away from them. |
15 But the men were very good to us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we anything, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields.
15 And the men were very good to us; they didn't hinder us nor make demands on us every day we were with them; and when we were in the fields, | 15 And the men were very good to us; they didn't hinder us nor make demands on us every day we were with them; |
16 They were a wall to us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.
16 they were like a wall around us both by night and by day, during all the days that we were with them keeping the flock. | 16 and when we were in the fields, they were like a wall around us both by night and by day, during all the days that we were with them keeping the flock. |
17 Now therefore know and consider what you will do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household; for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
17 And now know, and see what you will do, for evil has been decided against our master and against his house, and he is a pestilent son, and it is not possible to speak to him.” | 17 And now know, and see what you will do, for evil has been decided against our master and against his house, and he is a pestilent son, and it is not possible to speak to him.” |
Abigail Intercedes
18 Then Abigail made haste, and took 200 loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched grain, and 100 clusters of raisins, and 200 cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys.
18 And Abigaia hurried and took 200 loaves and two vessels of wine and five sheep ready dressed and five ephas of barley and one homer of raisins and 200 fruitcakes and put them on the donkeys | 18 And Abigaia hurried and took 200 loaves and two vessels of wine and five sheep ready dressed and five ephas of barley and one homer of raisins and 200 fruitcakes and put them on the donkeys |
19 And she said to her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she didn’t tell her husband Nabal.

20 And it was so, as she rode on the donkey, that she came down by the covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down against her; and she met them.
20 And it happened, when she was mounted on the donkey and was going down under cover of the mountain, that, look! David and his men were coming down to meet her, and she met them. | 20 And it happened, when she was mounted on the donkey and was going down under cover of the mountain, that, look! David and his men were coming down to meet her, and she met them. |
21 Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained to him; and he has requited me evil for good.
21 And David said, “Maybe for an unrighteous fellow I have protected all his belongings in the wilderness, and we have not ordered to receive anything of all his belongings, and he has returned me evil for good. | 21 And David said, “Maybe for an unrighteous fellow I have protected all his belongings in the wilderness, and we have not ordered to receive anything of all his belongings, and he has returned me evil for good. |
22 So and more also do God to the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisses against the wall.
22 This is what God may do to David, and this is what he may he add, if by morning I will leave of all who belong to Nabal one who urinates against a wall.” | 22 This is what God may do to David, and this is what he may he add, if by morning I will leave of all who belong to Nabal one who urinates against a wall.” |
23 And when Abigail saw David, she hurried, and lighted off the donkey, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,
23 And Abigaia saw David, and she hurried and leaped down from her donkey; and she fell before David on her face, and did obeisance to him, bowing to the ground | 23 And Abigaia saw David, and she hurried and leaped down from her donkey; and she fell before David on her face, and did obeisance to him, bowing to the ground |
24 And fell at his feet, and said, on me, my lord, on me let this iniquity be; and let your handmaid, please, speak in your audience, and hear the words of your handmaid.
24 on his feet and said, “Upon me, my master, be the injustice; please let your slave speak in your ears, and hear a word of your slave. | 24 on his feet and said, “Upon me, my master, be the injustice; please let your slave speak in your ears, and hear a word of your slave. |
25 Don’t let my lord, please, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal; for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him; but I your handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom you sent.
25 Please let not my master set his heart on this pestilent person, for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him, but I, your slave, did not see your youths whom you sent. | 25 Please let not my master set his heart on this pestilent person, for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him, but I, your slave, did not see your youths whom you sent. |
26 Now therefore, my lord, as Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, seeing Yahweh has withheld you from coming to shed blood, and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now let your enemies, and they who seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
26 “And now, my master, the Lord lives, and your life lives, since the Lord restrained you from coming against innocent blood, and to save your hand for yourself, even now may your enemies and those who seek evil for my master be like Nabal. | 26 “And now, my master, the Lord lives, and your life lives, since the Lord restrained you from coming against innocent blood, and to save your hand for yourself, even now may your enemies and those who seek evil for my master be like Nabal. |
27 And now this blessing which your handmaid has brought to my lord, let it even be given to the young men who follow my lord.
27 And now take this blessing that your slave has brought for my master, and you shall give it to the youths who follow my master. | 27 And now take this blessing that your slave has brought for my master, and you shall give it to the youths who follow my master. |
28 please, forgive the trespass of your handmaid; for Yahweh will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fights the battles of Yahweh, and evil hasn’t been found in you all your days.
28 Please remove the trespass of your slave; for while making, the Lord will make for my master a faithful house, because my master is fighting the battle of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you ever. | 28 Please remove the trespass of your slave; for while making, the Lord will make for my master a faithful house, because my master is fighting the battle of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you ever. |
29 Yet a man is risen to pursue you, and to seek your soul; but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with Yahweh your Elohim; and the souls of your enemies, them he shall sling out, as out of the middle of a sling.
29 And a man will rise up pursuing you and seeking your life, and the life of my master shall be bound up in the bundle of life with the care of the Lord God, and the life of your enemies you shall sling out in the midst of the sling. | 29 And a man will rise up pursuing you and seeking your life, and the life of my master shall be bound up in the bundle of life with the care of the Lord God, and the life of your enemies you shall sling out in the midst of the sling. |
30 And it will happen, when Yahweh shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and shall have appointed you ruler over Israēl;
30 And it will be that the Lord will do to my master all the good that he spoke concerning you, and the Lord will command you to be leader over Israēl, | 30 And it will be that the Lord will do to my master all the good that he spoke concerning you, and the Lord will command you to be leader over Israēl, |
31 That this shall be no grief to you, nor offence of heart to my lord, either that you have shed blood causeless, or that my lord has avenged himself; but when Yahweh shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember your handmaid.

32 And David said to Abigail, Blessed be Yahweh Elohim of Israēl, which sent you this day to meet me.
32 And David said to Abigaia, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israēl, who sent you to meet me on this very day, | 32 And David said to Abigaia, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israēl, who sent you to meet me on this very day, |
33 And blessed be your advice, and blessed be you, which have kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with my own hand.
33 and blessed be your character, and blessed be you who has hindered me on this very day so as not to come into spilling of blood and to save my hand for myself. | 33 and blessed be your character, and blessed be you who has hindered me on this very day so as not to come into spilling of blood and to save my hand for myself. |
34 For in very deed, as Yahweh Elohim of Israēl lives, which has kept me back from hurting you, except you had hurried and come to meet me, surely there hadn't been left to Nabal by the morning light any that pisses against the wall.
34 Nevertheless the Lord, the God of Israēl, lives, who has hindered me today from hurting you, because if you hadn't hurried and arrived to meet me, then I had said, ‘By morning light there would not have been left to Nabal one who urinates against a wall.’ ” | 34 Nevertheless the Lord, the God of Israēl, lives, who has hindered me today from hurting you, because if you hadn't hurried and arrived to meet me, then I had said, ‘By morning light there would not have been left to Nabal one who urinates against a wall.’ ” |
35 So David received of her hand what she had brought him, and said to her, Go up in peace to your house; see, I have listened to your voice, and have accepted your person.
35 And David received from her hand all that she had brought him, and he said to her, “Go up to your house in peace; see, I have heeded your voice, and I have chosen your face.” | 35 And David received from her hand all that she had brought him, and he said to her, “Go up to your house in peace; see, I have heeded your voice, and I have chosen your face.” |
36 And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; therefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.
36 And Abigaia came to Nabal, and look! he had a party in his house like a party of a king, and Nabal’s heart was merry on him, and he was exceedingly drunk, and she didn't tell him a word small or great until the morning light. | 36 And Abigaia came to Nabal, and look! he had a party in his house like a party of a king, and Nabal’s heart was merry on him, and he was exceedingly drunk, and she didn't tell him a word small or great until the morning light. |
37 But it happened in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
37 And it happened in the morning, when Nabal had sobered up from the wine, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became like a stone. | 37 And it happened in the morning, when Nabal had sobered up from the wine, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became like a stone. |
38 And it happened about ten days after, that Yahweh smote Nabal, that he died.
38 And it happened about ten days later, and the Lord struck Nabal, and he died. | 38 And it happened about ten days later, and the Lord struck Nabal, and he died. |
David Marries Abigail
39 And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be Yahweh, that has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and has kept his servant from evil; for Yahweh has returned the wickedness of Nabal on his own head, And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.

39 And David heard and said, “Blessed be the Lord who has judged the cause of my reproach at Nabal’s hand and has kept back his slave from the hand of evil acts, and the Lord has returned the evil-doing of Nabal on his head.” And David sent and spoke concerning Abigaia to take her to himself as a wife. |
40 And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, David sent us to you to take you to him to wife.
40 And David’s servants came to Abigaia at Karmēl and spoke to her, saying, “David sent us to you to take you to him as a wife.” | 40 And David’s servants came to Abigaia at Karmēl and spoke to her, saying, “David sent us to you to take you to him as a wife.” |
41 And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let your handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.
41 And she rose and did obeisance, face to the ground, and said, “Look! your slave is for a servant girl to wash the feet of your servants.” | 41 And she rose and did obeisance, face to the ground, and said, “Look! your slave is for a servant girl to wash the feet of your servants.” |
42 And Abigail hurried, and arose, and rode on a donkey, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.

43 David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives.
