David Again Spares Saul

1 And the Ziphites came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doesn’t David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon?

1 And the Ziphaites came from the dry country to Saoul on the hill, saying, “Look! David is sheltering with us on the hill of Echela, which is in front of Jessaimoun.” 1 And the Ziphaites came from the dry country to Saoul on the hill, saying, “Look! David is sheltering with us on the hill of Echela, which is in front of Jessaimoun.”

2 Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having 3000 chosen men of Israēl with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

2 And Saoul rose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, and with him were 3000 chosen men of Israēl, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. 2 And Saoul rose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, and with him were 3000 chosen men of Israēl, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

3 And Saul camped in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.

3 And Saoul encamped on the hill of Echela in front of Jessaimoun beside the road, and David settled in the wilderness. And David saw that Saoul had come after him into the wilderness, 3 And Saoul encamped on the hill of Echela in front of Jessaimoun beside the road, and David settled in the wilderness. And David saw that Saoul had come after him into the wilderness,

4 David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul came in very deed.

4 and David sent out spies and learned that Saoul had come prepared from Keila. 4 and David sent out spies and learned that Saoul had come prepared from Keila.

5 And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had camped; and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army; and Saul lay in the trench, and the people camped all around him.

5 And David rose secretly and went in to the place, where Saoul was sleeping there, and Abennēr son of Melchol, his chief commander, and Saoul was sleeping in a covered chariot, and the people were encamped around him. 5 And David rose secretly and went in to the place, where Saoul was sleeping there, and Abennēr son of Nēr, his chief commander, and Saoul was sleeping in a covered chariot, and the people were encamped around him.

6 Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with you.

6 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Δαυὶδ καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ἀχιμελὲχ τὸν Χετταῖον καὶ πρὸς Ἀβεσσὰ υἱὸν Σαρουίας ἀδελφὸν Ἰωὰβ λέγων τίς εἰσελεύσεται μετ’ ἐμοῦ πρὸς Σαοὺλ εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν;
6 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Δαυὶδ καὶ εἶπε πρὸς Ἀβιμέλεχ τὸν Χετταῖον καὶ πρὸς Ἀβεσσὰ υἱὸν Σαρουΐας ἀδελφὸν Ἰωὰβ λέγων· τίς εἰσελεύσεται μετ’ ἐμοῦ πρὸς Σαοὺλ εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν;
6 And David answered and said to Achimelech the Chettite and to Jōab’s brother Abessa son of Sarouia, saying “Who will enter with me into the camp to Saoul?” And Abessa said, “I will enter with you.” 6 And David answered and said to Achimelech the Chettite and to Jōab’s brother Abessa son of Sarouia, saying “Who will enter with me into the camp to Saoul?” And Abessa said, “I will enter with you.”

7 So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster; but Abner and the people lay all around him.

7 And David went in, and Abessa, to the people by night, and look! Saoul lay in sleep in a covered chariot, and his spear stuck in the ground at his head, and Abennēr and his people were sleeping around him. 7 And David went in, and Abessa, to the people by night, and look! Saoul lay in sleep in a covered chariot, and his spear stuck in the ground at his head, and Abennēr and his people were sleeping around him.

8 Then said Abishai to David, God has delivered your enemy into your hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, please, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I won’t smite him the second time.

8 And Abessa said to David, “The Lord has shut up your enemy into your hand today, and now I will strike him to the ground with the spear once, and I won't repeat it.” 8 And Abessa said to David, “The Lord has shut up your enemy into your hand today, and now I will strike him to the ground with the spear once, and I won't repeat it.”

9 And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not; for who can stretch forth his hand against Yahweh’s anointed, and be guiltless?

9 καὶ εἶπεν Δαυὶδ πρὸς Ἀβεσσὰ μὴ ταπεινώσῃς αὐτόν, ὅτι τίς ἐποίσει χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ χριστὸν κυρίου καὶ ἀθῳωθήσεται; 9 καὶ εἶπε Δαυὶδ πρὸς Ἀβεσσά· μὴ ταπεινώσῃς αὐτόν, ὅτι τίς ἐποίσει χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ χριστὸν Κυρίου καὶ ἀθωωθήσεται;
9 And David said to Abessa, “Don't humble him, for who shall bring his hand on the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless?” 9 And David said to Abessa, “Don't humble him, for who shall bring his hand on the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless?”

10 David said furthermore, As Yahweh lives, Yahweh shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.

10 And David said, “The Lord lives, if the Lord doesn’t strike him down or his day comes and he dies or he goes down into battle and is taken away, 10 And David said, “The Lord lives, if the Lord doesn’t strike him down or his day comes and he dies or he goes down into battle and is taken away,

11 Yahweh forbid that I should stretch forth my hand against Yahweh’s anointed: but, please, take you now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let’s go.

11 it is certainly not from the Lord to bring my hand against the Lord’s anointed, and now please take the spear from by his head, and the jar of water, and let us depart by ourselves.” 11 it is certainly not from the Lord to bring my hand against the Lord’s anointed, and now please take the spear from by his head, and the jar of water, and let us depart by ourselves.”

12 So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul’s bolster; and they got them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked; for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from Yahweh was fallen on them.

12 And David took the spear and the jar of water from by his head, and they went away by themselves. And there was no one to see it and no one to know it and no one to awaken; all were sleeping, because stupefaction from the Lord had fallen on them. 12 And David took the spear and the jar of water from by his head, and they went away by themselves. And there was no one to see it and no one to know it and no one to awaken; all were sleeping, because stupefaction from the Lord had fallen on them.

13 Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of a hill afar off; a great space being between them.

13 And David went over to the other side and stood on the top of the mountain far away, and the distance between them was great. 13 And David went over to the other side and stood on the top of the mountain far away, and the distance between them was great.

14 And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Don’t you answer, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who are you who cry to the king?

14 καὶ προσεκαλέσατο Δαυὶδ τὸν λαὸν καὶ τῷ Ἀβεννὴρ ἐλάλησεν λέγων οὐκ ἀποκριθήσει, Ἀβεννήρ;
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ἀβεννὴρ καὶ εἶπεν τίς εἶ σὺ καλῶν με;
14 καὶ προσεκαλέσατο Δαυὶδ τὸν λαὸν καὶ τῷ Ἀβεννὴρ ἐλάλησε λέγων· οὐκ ἀποκριθήσῃ Ἀβεννήρ;
καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ἀβεννὴρ καὶ εἶπε· τίς εἶ σὺ καλῶν με;
14 And David called to the people, and he spoke to Abennēr, saying, “Abennēr! Will you not answer?” And Abennēr answered and said, “Who are you who is calling me?” 14 And David called to the people, and he spoke to Abennēr, saying, “Abennēr! Will you not answer?” And Abennēr answered and said, “Who are you who is calling me?”

15 And David said to Abner, Art not you a valiant man? And who is like to you in Israēl? therefore then you haven’t kept your lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king your lord.

15 καὶ εἶπεν Δαυὶδ πρὸς Ἀβεννὴρ οὐκ ἀνὴρ σύ;
καὶ τίς ὡς σὺ ἐν Ἰσραήλ;
καὶ διὰ τί οὐ φυλάσσεις τὸν κύριόν σου τὸν βασιλέα;
15 καὶ εἶπε Δαυὶδ πρὸς Ἀβεννήρ· οὐκ ἀνὴρ σύ;
καὶ τίς ὡς σὺ ἐν Ἰσραήλ;
καὶ διατί οὐ φυλάσσεις τὸν κύριόν σου τὸν βασιλέα;
15 And David said to Abennēr, “Are you not a man? And who is like you in Israēl? And why don't you guard your master the king? For one of the people came in to destroy your master the king. 15 And David said to Abennēr, “Are you not a man? And who is like you in Israēl? And why don't you guard your master the king? For one of the people came in to destroy your master the king.

16 This thing is not good that you have done. As Yahweh lives, you are worthy to die, because you haven’t kept your master, Yahweh’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his bolster.

καὶ νῦν ἰδὲ δή· τὸ δόρυ τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ φακὸς τοῦ ὕδατος ποῦ ἐστιν τὰ πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ;
καὶ νῦν ἰδὲ δή· τὸ δόρυ τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ φακὸς τοῦ ὕδατος ποῦ ἔστι τὰ πρὸς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ;
16 And this thing that you have done is not good. The Lord lives, because you are sons of execution who guard our master the king, the Lord’s anointed. And now please look! Where are the king’s spear and the jar of water that are at his head?” 16 And this thing that you have done is not good. The Lord lives, because you are sons of execution who guard our master the king, the Lord’s anointed. And now please look! Where are the king’s spear and the jar of water that are at his head?”

17 And Saul knew David’s voice, and said, Is this your voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, Oh king.

17 καὶ ἐπέγνω Σαοὺλ τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ Δαυὶδ καὶ εἶπεν φωνή σου αὕτη, τέκνον Δαυίδ;
17 καὶ ἐπέγνω Σαοὺλ τὴν φωνὴν Δαυὶδ καὶ εἶπε· φωνή σου αὕτη, τέκνον Δαυίδ;
17 And Saoul recognized David’s voice and said, “Is this your voice, my child David?” And David said, “Your slave, Oh master the king.” 17 And Saoul recognized David’s voice and said, “Is this your voice, my child David?” And David said, “Your slave, Oh master the king.”

18 And he said, Why does my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in my hand?

18 καὶ εἶπεν ἵνα τί τοῦτο καταδιώκει κύριός μου ὀπίσω τοῦ δούλου αὐτοῦ;
ὅτι τί ἡμάρτηκα καὶ τί εὑρέθη ἐν ἐμοὶ ἀδίκημα;
18 καὶ εἶπε· ἱνατί τοῦτο καταδιώκει κύριος ὀπίσω τοῦ δούλου αὐτοῦ;
ὅτι τί ἡμάρτηκα καὶ τί εὑρέθη ἐν ἐμοὶ ἀδίκημα;
18 And he said, “Why does my master thus pursue after his slave? For what have I sinned? And what injustice was found in me? 18 And he said, “Why does my master thus pursue after his slave? For what have I sinned? And what injustice was found in me?

19 Now therefore, please, let my master the king hear the words of his servant. If Yahweh have stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering; but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before Yahweh; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of Yahweh, saying, Go, serve other gods.

19 And now please let my master the king hear the word of his slave: if it is God who stirs you up against me, may he smell your offering, and if it is sons of men, may they be cursed before the Lord, for they have driven me out today so as not to be established in the heritage of the Lord, saying, ‘Go, be subject to other gods.’ 19 And now please let my master the king hear the word of his slave: if it is God who stirs you up against me, may he smell your offering, and if it is sons of men, may they be cursed before the Lord, for they have driven me out today so as not to be established in the heritage of the Lord, saying, ‘Go, be subject to other gods.’

20 Now therefore, don’t let my blood fall to the earth before the face of Yahweh; for the king of Israēl is come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains.

20 And now, may my blood not fall to the ground opposite the presence of the Lord, for the king of Israēl has come out to seek my life, as the night-owl hunts on the mountains.” 20 And now, may my blood not fall to the ground opposite the presence of the Lord, for the king of Israēl has come out to seek my life, as the night-owl hunts on the mountains.”

21 Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David; for I will no more do you harm, because my soul was precious in your eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.

21 And Saoul said, “I have done wrong; come back, my child David, for I will not harm you, because my life was precious in your eyes in this very day; I have been foolish and ignorant very greatly.” 21 And Saoul said, “I have done wrong; come back, my child David, for I will not harm you, because my life was precious in your eyes in this very day; I have been foolish and ignorant very greatly.”

22 And David answered and said, Behold the king’s spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it.

22 And David answered and said, “Look! the spear of the king! Let one of the youths cross over and get it. 22 And David answered and said, “Look! the spear of the king! Let one of the youths cross over and get it.

23 Yahweh render to every man his righteousness and his faithfullness; for Yahweh delivered you into my hand today, but I would not stretch forth my hand against Yahweh’s anointed.

23 And the Lord will return to each his righteous deeds and his faith, as the Lord gave you into my hand today, and I did not want to bring my hand on the Lord’s anointed, 23 And the Lord will return to each his righteous deeds and his faith, as the Lord gave you into my hand today, and I did not want to bring my hand on the Lord’s anointed,

24 And, behold, as your life was much set by this day in my eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of Yahweh, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation.

24 and look! as your life was magnified in my eyes on this today, so may my life be magnified before the Lord, and may he protect me, and he will deliver me from all tribulation.” 24 and look! as your life was magnified in my eyes on this today, so may my life be magnified before the Lord, and may he protect me, and he will deliver me from all tribulation.”

25 Then Saul said to David, Blessed be you, my son David: you shall both do great things, and also shall still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

25 And Saoul said to David, “Blessed be you, child. And while doing, you will do, and while succeeding, you will succeed.” And David went on his way, and Saoul returned to his place. 25 And Saoul said to David, “Blessed be you, child. And while doing, you will do, and while succeeding, you will succeed.” And David went on his way, and Saoul returned to his place.
