Israēl Reaps the Whirlwind
1 Set the trumpet to your mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of Yahweh, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.
| 1 Into their chest like land, like an eagle over the house of the Lord, because they transgressed my covenant and acted impiously against my law. | 1 Into their chest like land, like an eagle over the house of the Lord, because they transgressed my covenant and acted impiously against my law. |
2 Israēl shall cry to me, My God, we know you.
| 2 They will call aloud for me, “Oh God we have known you.” | 2 They will call aloud for me, “Oh God we have known you.” |
3 Israēl has cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him.
| 3 Because Israēl has turned away from good things, they have pursued an enemy. | 3 Because Israēl has turned away from good things, they have pursued an enemy. |
4 They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I didn’t know it: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off.
| 4 They made a king for themselves, and not through me; they ruled and didn’t know me. They made their silver and gold into idols for themselves, that they might be destroyed. | 4 They made a king for themselves, and not through me; they ruled and didn’t know me. They made their silver and gold into idols for themselves, that they might be destroyed. |
5 Your calf, Oh Samaria, has cast you off; my anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency?
| 5 Get rid of your bull calf, Oh Samaria; my anger was provoked against them. How long will they be incapable of purification | 5 Get rid of your bull calf, Oh Samaria; my anger was provoked against them. How long will they be incapable of purification in Israēl? |
6 For from Israēl was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God; but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.
| 6
ἐν
τῷ
| 6 in Israēl? And an craftsman made it, and it is not a god. Because your bull calf, Oh Samaria, was a deceiver. | 6 And an craftsman made it, and it is not a god. Because your bull calf, Oh Samaria, was a deceiver. |
7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it has no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: perhaps it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
| 7 Because they sowed seeds blasted by the wind, their destruction shall also await them— a sheaf unable to produce flour, and even if it should do so, foreigners will devour it. | 7 Because they sowed seeds blasted by the wind, their destruction shall also await them— a sheaf unable to produce flour, and even if it should do so, foreigners will devour it. |
8 Israēl is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel in which is no pleasure.
| 8 Israēl was swallowed up; now they have come to be among the nations as a useless vessel, | 8 Israēl was swallowed up; now they have come to be among the nations as a useless vessel, |
9 For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild donkey alone by himself: Ephraim has hired lovers.
| 9 because they went up to the Assyrians. Ephraim flourished anew by himself; they loved gifts. | 9 because they went up to the Assyrians. Ephraim flourished anew by himself; they loved gifts. |
10 Yes, though they have hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes.
| 10 Therefore they will be delivered up among the nations. Now I will take them in, and they will relax for a little while, from anointing king and leaders. | 10 Therefore they will be delivered up among the nations. Now I will take them in, and they will relax for a little while, from anointing king and leaders. |
11 Because Ephraim has made many altars to sin, altars shall be to him to sin.
| 11 Because Ephraim multiplied altars, beloved altars became sins to him. | 11 Because Ephraim multiplied altars, beloved altars became sins to him. |
12 I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing.
| 12 I shall write down for him a multitude, even his precepts; the beloved altars were considered as foreign. | 12 I shall write down for him a multitude, even his precepts; the beloved altars were considered as foreign. |
13 They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of my offerings, and eat it; but Yahweh accepts them not; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.

| 13 Therefore, if they offer a sacrifice and eat meat, the Lord will not accept these things. Now he will remember their injustices and punish their sins; they have returned to Aigypt and will eat unclean things among the Assyrians. | 13 Therefore, if they offer a sacrifice and eat meat, the Lord will not accept these things. Now he will remember their injustices and punish their sins; they have returned to Aigypt and will eat unclean things among the Assyrians. |
14 For Israēl has forgotten his Maker, and builds temples; and Judah has multiplied fenced cities; but I will send a fire on his cities, and it shall devour the palaces of it.
καὶ

τοῦ
καὶ
καὶ

|
| 14 And Israēl has forgotten the one who made him and built shrines, and Joudas has multiplied walled cities, and I will send a fire into his cities, and it shall devour their foundations. | 14 And Israēl has forgotten the one who made him and built shrines, and Joudas has multiplied walled cities, and I will send a fire into his cities, and it shall devour their foundations. |
