God judges Egypt

1 And Yahweh said to Moses, “See, I have made you a god to Pharaoh; and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet.

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Look! I have given you as a god to Pharaō, and Aarōn, your brother, shall be your prophet. 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Look! I have given you as a god to Pharaō, and Aarōn, your brother, shall be your prophet.

2 You shall speak all that I command you; and Aaron your brother shall speak to Pharaoh, that he send the sons of Israēl out of his land.

2 Then you shall speak to him all things that I command you, and Aarōn, your brother, shall speak to Pharaō so that he sends the sons of Israēl out from his land. 2 Then you shall speak to him all things that I command you, and Aarōn, your brother, shall speak to Pharaō so that he sends the sons of Israēl out from his land.

3 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.

3 But I will harden Pharaō’s heart, and I will multiply my signs and wonders in Aigypt’s land. 3 But I will harden Pharaō’s heart, and I will multiply my signs and wonders in Aigypt’s land.

4 But Pharaoh shall not listen to you, that I may lay my hand on Egypt, and bring forth my armies, and my people the sons of Israēl, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments.

4 And Pharaō won’t listen to you, and I will lay my hand on Aigypt, and I will bring out with my force, my people, the sons of Israēl, from Aigypt’s land with great vengeance. 4 And Pharaō won’t listen to you, and I will lay my hand on Aigypt, and I will bring out with my force, my people, the sons of Israēl, from Aigypt’s land with great vengeance.

5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh, when I stretch forth my hand on Egypt, and bring out the sons of Israēl from among them.”

5 And all the Aigyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out my hand against Aigypt, and I shall bring the sons of Israēl out from their midst.” 5 And all the Aigyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out my hand against Aigypt, and I shall bring the sons of Israēl out from their midst.”

6 And Moses and Aaron did as Yahweh commanded them, so they did.

6 And Moses and Aarōn did just as the Lord commanded them; so they did. 6 And Moses and Aarōn did just as the Lord commanded them; so they did.

7 And Moses was 80 years old, and Aaron 83 years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

7 Now Moses was 80 years old, but Aarōn, his brother, was 83 years old, when he spoke to Pharaō. 7 Now Moses was 80 years old, but Aarōn, his brother, was 83 years old, when he spoke to Pharaō.

Aaron’s Rod Becomes a Serpent

8 And Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

8 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aarōn, saying, 8 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aarōn, saying,

9 “When Pharaoh shall speak to you, saying, ‘Show a miracle for you!’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent.’ ”

9 “And if Pharaō should speak to you, saying, ‛Give us a sign or wonder,’ then you shall say to Aarōn, your brother, ‛Take the rod, and throw it on the ground before Pharaō and before his attendants,’ and it will be a dragon.” 9 “And if Pharaō should speak to you, saying, ‛Give us a sign or wonder,’ then you shall say to Aarōn, your brother, ‛Take the rod, and throw it on the ground before Pharaō and before his attendants,’ and it will be a dragon.”

10 And Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so as Yahweh had commanded; and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.

10 Then Moses and Aarōn went in before Pharaō and his attendants and did so just as the Lord commanded them. And Aarōn threw down the rod before Pharaō and before his attendants, and it became a dragon. 10 Then Moses and Aarōn went in before Pharaō and his attendants and did so just as the Lord commanded them. And Aarōn threw down the rod before Pharaō and before his attendants, and it became a dragon.

11 Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers. Now the magicians of Egypt also did in like manner with their enchantments.

11 But Pharaō summoned the experts of Aigypt and the sorcerers, and they also, the enchanters of the Aigyptians, did likewise by their magic potions. 11 But Pharaō summoned the experts of Aigypt and the sorcerers, and they also, the enchanters of the Aigyptians, did likewise by their magic potions.

12 For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents; but Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.

12 And each one threw down his rod, and they became dragons, then the rod of Aarōn swallowed the rods of those men . 12 And each one threw down his rod, and they became dragons, then the rod of Aarōn swallowed the rods of those men .

13 And he hardened Pharaoh’s heart, that he didn’t listen to them; as Yahweh had said.

13 And the heart of Pharaō was irresponsive, and he didn’t listen to them, just as the Lord spoke to them. 13 And the heart of Pharaō was irresponsive, and he didn’t listen to them, just as the Lord spoke to them.

Water Is Turned to Blood

14 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is hardened, he refuses to let the people go.

14 Now the Lord said to Moses, “The heart of Pharaō is weighed down so as not to send out the people. 14 Now the Lord said to Moses, “The heart of Pharaō is weighed down so as not to send out the people.

15 Get you to Pharaoh in the morning; lo, he goes out to the water; and you shall stand by the river’s brink for when he comes; and the rod which was turned to a serpent you shall take in your hand.

15 Go to Pharaō in the morning. Look! he is going out to the water, and you shall stand, meeting him on the bank of the river; and in your hand, you shall take the rod that was turned into a snake. 15 Go to Pharaō in the morning. Look! he is going out to the water, and you shall stand, meeting him on the bank of the river; and in your hand, you shall take the rod that was turned into a snake.

16 And you shall say to him, ‘Yahweh Elohim of the Hebrews has sent me to you, saying, “Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness”; and, behold, until now you would not hear.

16 And you shall say to him, ‛The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, “Send out my people in order that they may serve me in the wilderness. And Look! up to this time, you didn’t listen. 16 And you shall say to him, ‛The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, “Send out my people in order that they may serve me in the wilderness. And Look! up to this time, you didn’t listen.

17 ‘Thus says Yahweh, “In this you shall know that I am Yahweh: behold, I will smite with the rod that is in my hand on the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.

17 The Lord says this. By this you shall know that I am the Lord. Look! with the rod that is in my hand I am striking on the water that is in the river, and it shall transform into blood. 17 By this you shall know that I am the Lord. Look! with the rod that is in my hand I am striking on the water that is in the river, and it shall transform into blood.

18 And the fish that is in the river shall die, and the river shall stink; and the Egyptians shall refuse to drink of the water of the river.”’ ”

18 And the fish that are in the river shall die, and the river shall stink, and the Aigyptians shall be unable to drink water from the river.”’ ” 18 And the fish that are in the river shall die, and the river shall stink, and the Aigyptians shall be unable to drink water from the river.”’ ”

19 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod, and stretch out your hand on the waters of Egypt, on their streams, on their rivers, and on their ponds, and on all their pools of water, that they may become blood; and that there may be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood, and in vessels of stone.’ ”

19 Next the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aarōn, your brother, ‛Take your rod, and stretch out your hand over the waters of Aigypt and over their rivers and over their trenches and over their marshes and over all their collected water, and they shall be blood.’ ” And blood came to be in all Aigypt’s land, both in things made with wood and in things made with stone. 19 Next the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aarōn, your brother, ‛Take your rod in your hand, and stretch out your hand over the waters of Aigypt and over their rivers and over their trenches and over their marshes and over all their collected water, and they shall be blood.’ ” And blood came to be in all Aigypt’s land, both in things made with wood and in things made with stone.

20 And Moses and Aaron did so, as Yahweh commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.

20 And Moses and Aarōn did so just as the Lord commanded them. Then after he lifted up with his rod, he struck the water that was in the river before Pharaō and before his attendants, and all the water in the river transformed into blood. 20 And Moses and Aarōn did so just as the Lord commanded them. Then after he lifted up with his rod, he struck the water that was in the river before Pharaō and before his attendants, and all the water in the river transformed into blood.

21 And the fish that were in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians couldn’t drink the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.

21 And the fish in the river died, and the river stank, and the Aigyptians were unable to drink water from the river, and there was blood in the whole land of Aigypt. 21 And the fish in the river died, and the river stank, and the Aigyptians were unable to drink water from the river, and there was blood in the whole land of Aigypt.

22 And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments; and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, neither did he listen to them; as Yahweh had said.

22 But also the enchanters of the Aigyptians did likewise with their magical potions. And Pharaō’s heart was inflexible, and he didn’t listen to them, just as the Lord said. 22 But also the enchanters of the Aigyptians did likewise with their magical potions. And Pharaō’s heart was inflexible, and he didn’t listen to them, just as the Lord said.

23 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house, neither did he set his heart to this also.

23 And after Pharaō turned around, he went into his house, and he didn’t bother his mind even about this. 23 And after Pharaō turned around, he went into his house, and he didn’t bother his mind even about this.

24 And all the Egyptians dug all around the river for water to drink; for they couldn’t drink of the water of the river.

24 Now all the Aigyptians dug around the river so that they might drink water, and they were unable to drink water from the river. 24 Now all the Aigyptians dug around the river so that they might drink water, and they were unable to drink water from the river.

25 And seven days were fulfilled, after that Yahweh had struck the river.

25 And seven days elapsed after the Lord struck the river. 25 And seven days elapsed after the Lord struck the river.
