Joseph Interprets a Dream

1 And it happened after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.

1 After these things, it happened that the head wine steward of the king of Aigypt and the chief baker offended their lord the king of Aigypt. 1 After these things, it happened that the head wine steward of the king of Aigypt and the chief baker offended their lord the king of Aigypt.

2 And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.

2 And Pharaō became angry with his two eunuchs (with the head wine steward and with the chief baker), 2 And Pharaō became angry with his two eunuchs (with the head wine steward and with the chief baker),

3 And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.

3 and he put them in custody by the warden into the prison, there in the place where Jōsēph had been led away. 3 and he put them in custody in the prison, there in the place where Jōsēph had been led away.

4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; and they continued a season in ward.

4 And the chief jailer put them together with Jōsēph, and he helped them, and they were in the jail for days. 4 And the chief jailer put them together with Jōsēph, and he helped them, and they were in the jail for days.

5 And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison.

5 And both saw a dream, each a dream in one night, a vision of his dream – the head wine steward and the chief baker who belonged to the king of Aigypt who were in prison. 5 And both saw a dream in one night, a vision of his dream – the head wine steward and the chief baker who belonged to the king of Aigypt who were in prison.

6 And Joseph came in to them in the morning, and looked on them, and, behold, they were sad.

6 And Jōsēph came in to them in the morning, and he saw them, and they had been troubled. 6 And Jōsēph came in to them in the morning, and he saw them, and they had been troubled.

7 And he asked Pharaoh’s officers that were with him in the ward of his lord’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sadly today?”

7 καὶ ἠρώτα τοὺς εὐνούχους Φαραώ, οἳ ἦσαν μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ παρὰ τῷ κυρίῳ αὐτοῦ, λέγων, Τί ὅτι τὰ πρόσωπα ὑμῶν σκυθρωπὰ σήμερον; 7 καὶ ἠρώτα τοὺς εὐνούχους Φαραώ, οἳ ἦσαν μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ παρὰ τῷ κυρίῳ αὐτοῦ, λέγων· τί ὅτι τὰ πρόσωπα ὑμῶν σκυθρωπὰ σήμερον;
7 And he was asking Pharaō’s eunuchs, who were with him in the prison at his master’s place, saying, “Why is it that your faces are gloomy today?” 7 And he was asking Pharaō’s eunuchs, who were with him in the prison at his master’s place, saying, “Why is it that your faces are gloomy today?”

8 And they said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.” And Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me them, please.”

εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἰωσήφ, Οὐχὶ διὰ τοῦ θεοῦ διασάφησις αὐτῶν ἐστιν;
εἶπε δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἰωσήφ· οὐχὶ διὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ διασάφησις αὐτῶν ἔστι;
8 And they said to him, “We have seen a dream, and there is no one to interpret it.” Then Jōsēph said to them, “Isn’t the explanation of them through God? So tell them to me.” 8 And they said to him, “We have seen a dream, and there is no one to interpret it.” Then Jōsēph said to them, “Isn’t the explanation of them through God? So tell them to me.”

9 And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;

9 And the head wine steward told his dream to Jōsēph and said, “In my sleep a vine was before me. 9 And the head wine steward told his dream to Jōsēph and said, “In my sleep a vine was before me.

10 And in the vine were three branches; and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters of it brought forth ripe grapes.

10 And on the vine were three stems, and it was flourishing, having produced shoots; the clusters of grapes were ripe. 10 And on the vine were three stems, and it was flourishing, having produced shoots; the clusters of grapes were ripe.

11 And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.”

11 And Pharaō’s cup was in my hand, and I took the bunch of grapes and squeezed it out into the cup and gave the cup into Pharaō’s hands.” 11 And Pharaō’s cup was in my hand, and I took the bunch of grapes and squeezed it out into the cup and gave the cup into Pharaō’s hands.”

12 And Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days.

12 And Jōsēph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three stems are three days; 12 And Jōsēph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three stems are three days;

13 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up your head, and restore you to your place; and you shall deliver Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, after the former manner when you were his butler.

13 yet three days and Pharaō will remember your office and restore you to your head wine stewardship, and you shall give Pharaō’s cup into his hand in accordance with your former office, when you used to pour wine. 13 yet three days and Pharaō will remember your office and restore you to your head wine stewardship, and you shall give Pharaō’s cup into his hand in accordance with your former office, when you used to pour wine.

14 But think on me when it shall be well with you, and show kindness, please, to me, and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house.

14 But remember me through yourself, when it becomes good for you, and show me mercy and remember me to Pharaō and bring me out of this prison. 14 But remember me through yourself, when it becomes good for you, and show me mercy and remember me to Pharaō and bring me out of this prison.

15 For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews; and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.x

15 For by theft I was stolen out of a land of Hebrews, and here I did nothing, but they put me into this pit.” 15 For by theft I was stolen out of a land of Hebrews, and here I did nothing, but they put me into this pit.”

16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, “I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head.

16 And the chief baker saw that he interpreted correctly, and he said to Jōsēph, “I also saw a dream, and I imagined I was taking up on my head three baskets of groat bread. 16 And the chief baker saw that he interpreted correctly, and he said to Jōsēph, “I also saw a dream, and I imagined I was taking up on my head three baskets of groat bread.

17 And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of baked foods for Pharaoh; and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.”

17 Now in the basket on top there was all kinds of baker’s work, which the king Pharaō eats, and the birds of the sky were devouring them from the basket that was on the top of my head.” 17 Now in the basket on top there was all kinds of baker’s work, which the king Pharaō eats, and the birds of the sky were devouring them from the basket that was on the top of my head.”

18 And Joseph answered and said, “This is the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days.

18 Now when Jōsēph answered, he said, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days; 18 Now when Jōsēph answered, he said, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days;

19 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up your head from off you, and shall hang you on a tree; and the birds shall eat your flesh from off you.”

19 After three days, Pharaō will remove your head from you and hang you on a tree, and the birds of the sky will eat your flesh from you.” 19 After three days, Pharaō will remove your head from you and hang you on a tree, and the birds of the sky will eat your flesh from you.”

20 And it happened the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast to all his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.

20 Now it happened on the third day, Pharaō’s birthday, and he was making a drinking party for all his servants. And he remembered the high office of the head wine steward and the high office of the chief baker among his servants. 20 Now it happened on the third day, Pharaō’s birthday, and he was making a drinking party for all his servants. And he remembered the high office of the head wine steward and the high office of the chief baker among his servants.

21 And he restored the chief butler to his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.

21 And he restored the head wine steward to his office, and he gave the cup into Pharaō’s hand, 21 And he restored the head wine steward to his office, and he gave the cup into Pharaō’s hand,

22 But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.

22 but he hanged the chief baker, just as Jōsēph had interpreted to them. 22 but he hanged the chief baker, just as Jōsēph had interpreted to them.

23 Yet the chief butler didn’t remember Joseph, but forgot him.

23 But the head wine steward did not remember Jōsēph; but he forgot him. 23 But the head wine steward did not remember Jōsēph; but he forgot him.
