Pharaoh’s Dream

1 And it happened at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.

1 Now it happened after two years of days that Pharaō saw a dream. He imagined he was standing by the river, 1 Now it happened after two years of days that Pharaō saw a dream. He imagined he was standing by the river,

2 And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fat; and they fed in a meadow.

2 then look! seven cows were coming up as it were out of the river. They were in good shape and choice in flesh, and they were grazing in the reed grass. 2 then look! seven cows were coming up as it were out of the river. They were in good shape and choice in flesh, and they were grazing in the reed grass.

3 And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill favoured and leanfleshed; and stood by the other kine on the brink of the river.

3 But another seven cows, ugly in appearance and skinny in flesh, were coming up out of the river after them and were grazing beside the cows by the bank of the river. 3 But another seven cows, ugly in appearance and skinny in flesh, were coming up out of the river after them and were grazing beside the cows by the bank of the river.

4 And the ill favoured and leanfleshed kine ate up the seven well favoured and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke.

4 And the seven cows that were ugly and skinny in flesh ate up the seven cows that were in good shape and choice. Then Pharaō awoke. 4 And the seven cows that were ugly and skinny in flesh ate up the seven cows that were in good shape and choice. Then Pharaō awoke.

5 And he slept and dreamed the second time: and, behold, seven ears of grain came up on one stalk, rank and good.

5 And he dreamed for the second time, and look! seven heads of grain, choice and good, were coming up on one stalk. 5 And he dreamed for the second time, and look! seven heads of grain, choice and good, were coming up on one stalk.

6 And, behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them.

6 Now look! another seven heads of grain, skinny and wind-damaged, were growing up with them. 6 Now look! seven heads of grain, skinny and wind-damaged, were growing up with them.

7 And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.

7 And the skinny and wind-damaged heads of grain, swallowed up the seven choice and full heads of grain. Then Pharaō awoke, and it was a dream. 7 And the skinny and wind-damaged heads of grain, swallowed up the seven choice and full heads of grain. Then Pharaō awoke, and it was a dream.

8 And it happened in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men of it; and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them to Pharaoh.

8 It became morning and his soul was troubled, and after sending for them, he called all the expositors of Aigypt and all its wise men, and Pharaō described his dream to them, and no one was explaining it to Pharaō. 8 It became morning and his soul was troubled, and after sending for them, he called all the expositors of Aigypt and all its wise men, and Pharaō described his dream to them, and no one was explaining it to Pharaō.

9 Then spoke the chief butler to Pharaoh, saying, “I do remember my faults this day.

9 And the head wine steward spoke to Pharaō, saying, “I recall my fault today. 9 And the head wine steward spoke to Pharaō, saying, “I recall my fault today.

10 Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and put me in ward in the captain of the guard’s house, both me and the chief baker.

10 Pharaō was angry with his servants and put us in custody in the house of the chief cook, both me and the chief baker. 10 Pharaō was angry with his servants and put us in custody in the house of the chief cook, both me and the chief baker.

11 And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

11 And we saw a dream in one night, both he and I; we saw, each according to his dream. 11 And we saw a dream in one night, both he and I; we saw, each according to his dream.

12 And there was there with us a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret.

12 Now a young man was there with us, a Hebrew servant of the chief cook, and we related to him, and he interpreted to us. 12 Now a young man was there with us, a Hebrew servant of the chief cook, and we related to him, and he interpreted to us.

13 And it happened, as he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored to my office, and him he hanged.”

13 And it happened that just as he interpreted to us, so also it happened, and thus I was restored to my head office, but that one was hanged.” 13 And it happened that just as he interpreted to us, so also it happened, and thus I was restored to my head office, but that one was hanged.”

Joseph Interprets

14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon; and he shaved himself, and changed his clothing, and came in to Pharaoh.

14 Then after Pharaō sent for him, he called Jōsēph, and they brought him out of the prison and shaved him and changed his robe, and he went to Pharaō. 14 Then after Pharaō sent for him, he called Jōsēph, and they brought him out of the prison and shaved him and changed his robe, and he went to Pharaō.

15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it; and I have heard say of you, that you can understand a dream to interpret it.”

15 And Pharaō said to Jōsēph, “I have seen a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. But I have heard concerning you saying, after hearing dreams, you interpret them.” 15 And Pharaō said to Jōsēph, “I have seen a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. But I have heard concerning you saying, after hearing dreams, you interpret them.”

16 And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”

16 When Jōsēph answered, he said to Pharaō, “Without God the safety of Pharaō will not be answered.” 16 When Jōsēph answered, he said to Pharaō, “Without God the safety of Pharaō will not be answered.”

17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream, behold, I stood on the bank of the river.

17 Then Pharaō spoke to Jōsēph, saying, “In my dream I imagined I was standing by the bank of the river, 17 Then Pharaō spoke to Jōsēph, saying, “In my dream I imagined I was standing by the bank of the river,

18 And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fat and well favoured; and they fed in a meadow.

18 and seven cows, in good shape and choice in flesh, were coming up as it were out of the river and were grazing in the reed grass. 18 and seven cows, in good shape and choice in flesh, were coming up as it were out of the river and were grazing in the reed grass.

19 And, behold, seven other kine came up after them, poor and very ill favoured and leanfleshed, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for badness.

19 And look! seven other cows were coming up after them out of the river, wicked and ugly in form and skinny in flesh, such that I had not seen uglier in the whole land of Aigypt. 19 And look! seven other cows were coming up after them out of the river, wicked and ugly in form and skinny in flesh, such that I had not seen uglier in the whole land of Aigypt.

20 And the lean and the ill favoured kine ate up the first seven fat kine.

20 And the seven skinny and ugly cows ate up the first seven good and choice cows, 20 And the seven skinny and ugly cows ate up the first seven good and choice cows,

21 And when they had eaten them up, it couldn’t be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill favoured, as at the beginning. So I awoke.

21 and they entered into their bellies, and they didn’t become noticeable that they entered into their bellies, and their outward appearances were ugly as also at first. After I awoke, I fell asleep. 21 and they entered into their bellies, and they didn’t become noticeable that they entered into their bellies, and their outward appearances were ugly as also at first. After I awoke, I fell asleep.

22 And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears came up in one stalk, full and good.

22 And I saw again in my sleep, and as it were seven heads of grain, full and good, were coming up on one stalk; 22 And I saw again in my sleep, and as it were seven heads of grain, full and good, were coming up on one stalk;

23 And, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them.

23 And other seven heads, skinny and wind-damaged, sprang up close to them. 23 And other seven heads, skinny and wind-damaged, sprang up close to them.

24 And the thin ears devoured the seven good ears; and I told this to the magicians; but there was none who could declare it to me.”

24 and the seven skinny and wind-damaged heads of grain swallowed up the seven good and full heads of grain. So I spoke to the expositors, and there was no one to explain it to me.” 24 and the seven skinny and wind-damaged heads of grain swallowed up the seven good and full heads of grain. So I spoke to the expositors, and there was no one to explain it to me.”

25 And Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dream of Pharaoh is one: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do.

25 And Jōsēph said to Pharaō, “Pharaō’s dream is one; God has shown to Pharaō what he is about to do. 25 And Jōsēph said to Pharaō, “Pharaō’s dream is one; God has shown to Pharaō what he is about to do.

26 The seven good kine are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one.

26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years; Pharaō’s dream is one. 26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years; Pharaō’s dream is one.

27 And the seven thin and ill favoured kine that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine.

27 And the seven skinny cows that were coming up after them are seven years, and the seven skinny and wind-damaged heads of grain shall be seven years of famine. 27 And the seven skinny cows that were coming up after them are seven years, and the seven skinny and wind-damaged heads of grain shall be seven years of famine.

28 This is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh: What God is about to do he shows to Pharaoh.

28 Now as for the word that I have spoken to Pharaō, God showed to Pharaō what he is about to do, 28 Now as for the word that I have spoken to Pharaō, God showed to Pharaō what he is about to do,

29 Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt.

29 Look! seven years are coming, great prosperity in all Aigypt’s land. 29 Look! seven years are coming, great prosperity in all Aigypt’s land.

30 And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land;

30 But after them will come seven years of famine, and they will forget the abundance in the whole land of Aigypt, and the famine will consume the land, 30 But after them will come seven years of famine, and they will forget the abundance in the whole land of Aigypt, and the famine will consume the land,

31 And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous.

31 and the prosperity will not be recognized on the land because of the famine that will be afterwards, for it will be very severe. 31 and the prosperity will not be recognized on the land because of the famine that will be afterwards, for it will be very severe.

32 And because the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

32 And concerning the repetition of Pharaō’s dream twice; it is because the matter that is from God will be genuine, and God will hurry to do it. 32 And concerning the repetition of Pharaō’s dream twice; it is because the matter that is from God will be genuine, and God will hurry to do it.

33 Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.

33 Now then search for a man, wise and intelligent, and appoint him over Aigypt’s land. 33 Now then search for a man, wise and intelligent, and appoint him over Aigypt’s land.

34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years.

34 And let Pharaō make and appoint district governors over the land, and let them take one-fifth of all the produce of the land of Aigypt in the seven years of prosperity, 34 And let Pharaō make and appoint district governors over the land, and let them take one-fifth of all the produce of the land of Aigypt in the seven years of prosperity,

35 And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up grain under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.

35 And let them gather all the food of these seven good years that are coming, and let the grain be gathered under the hand of Pharaō; let food be kept in the cities. 35 And let them gather all the food of these seven good years that are coming, and let the grain be gathered under the hand of Pharaō; let food be kept in the cities.

36 And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.”

36 And the stored food shall be for the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in Aigypt’s land; and the land shall not be utterly destroyed by the famine.” 36 And the stored food shall be for the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in Aigypt’s land; and the land shall not be utterly destroyed by the famine.”

37 And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.

37 And the words were pleasing before Pharaō and before all his servants, 37 And the words were pleasing before Pharaō and before all his servants,

Joseph Is Made a Ruler of Egypt

38 And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?”

38 καὶ εἶπεν Φαραὼ πᾶσιν τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ, Μὴ εὑρήσομεν ἄνθρωπον τοιοῦτον, ὃς ἔχει πνεῦμα θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ; 38 καὶ εἶπε Φαραὼ πᾶσι τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ· μὴ εὑρήσομεν ἄνθρωπον τοιοῦτον, ὃς ἔχει πνεῦμα Θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ;
38 and Pharaō said to all his servants, “We won’t find a man such as this, who has a divine spirit within, eh?” 38 and Pharaō said to all his servants, “We won’t find a man such as this, who has a divine spirit within, eh?”

39 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Forasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is none so discreet and wise as you are.

39 Then Pharaō said to Jōsēph, “Now, since God showed you all these things, there is no man wiser and more intelligent than you. 39 Then Pharaō said to Jōsēph, “Now, since God showed you all these things, there is no man wiser and more intelligent than you.

40 You shall be over my house, and according to your word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than you.”

40 You shall be over my house, and all my people shall comply with your mouth; only regarding the throne will I be above you.” 40 You shall be over my house, and all my people shall comply with your mouth; only regarding the throne will I be above you.”

41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph,“ See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”

42 And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it on Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;

42 And after Pharaō removed his finger ring from his hand, he presented it on Jōsēph’s hand and clothed him with fine linen robe and placed a gold collar around his neck. 42 And after Pharaō removed his finger ring from his hand, he presented it on Jōsēph’s hand and clothed him with fine linen robe and placed a gold collar around his neck.

44 And Pharaō said to Jōsēph, “I am Pharaō; without you no one shall lift up his hand in all Aigypt’s land.” 44 And Pharaō said to Jōsēph, “I am Pharaō; without you no one shall lift up his hand in all Aigypt’s land.”

45 And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnath-paaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.

46 And Joseph was 30 years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

47 And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls.

47 And in the seven years of posperity the land produced sheaves. 47 And in the seven years of posperity the land produced sheaves.

48 And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was all around every city, laid he up in the same.

48 And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, in which there was prosperity in Aigypt’s land, and put the food in the cities; food of the plains of the city which were around it he put in it. 48 And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, in which there was prosperity in Aigypt’s land, and put the food in the cities; food of the plains of the city which were around it he put in it.

49 And Joseph gathered grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number.

49 And Jōsēph gathered up very much grain like the sand of the sea until they were unable to count, for there was no counting. 49 And Jōsēph gathered up very much grain like the sand of the sea until they were unable to count, for there was no counting.

The Sons of Joseph

50 And to Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, whom Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On gave birth to him.

50 Now before the seven years of famine came, Jōsēph had two sons, whom Asenneth daughter of Petephrē, priest of Son City, gave birth to him. 50 Now before the seven years of famine came, Jōsēph had two sons, whom Asenneth daughter of Petephrē, priest of Ēlioupoleōs, gave birth to him.

51 And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: “For God,” said he, “has made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.”

51 And Jōsēph called the name of the firstborn Manassē, because “God has caused me to forget all my hardships and all things of my father.” 51 And Jōsēph called the name of the firstborn Manassē, because “God has caused me to forget all my hardships and all things of my father.”

52 And the name of the second called he Ephraim: “For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

52 And the name of the second he called Ephraim, because “God has made me increase in a land of my humiliation.” 52 And the name of the second he called Ephraim, because “God has made me increase in a land of my humiliation.”

53 And the seven years of plenty, that was in the land of Egypt, were ended.

53 So the seven years of prosperity that occurred in Aigypt’s land passed, 53 So the seven years of prosperity that occurred in Aigypt’s land passed,

54 And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said, and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

54 and the seven years of famine began to come, just as Jōsēph had said. And famine became in all the land, yet in all Aigypt’s land there was food. 54 and the seven years of famine began to come, just as Jōsēph had said. And famine became in all the land, yet in all Aigypt’s land there was food.

55 And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread; and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; what he says to you, do.”

55 And all the land of Aigypt was hungry, and the people cried to Pharaō for food. Then Pharaō said to all the Aigyptians, “Go to Jōsēph, and do whatever he says to you.” 55 And all the land of Aigypt was hungry, and the people cried to Pharaō for food. Then Pharaō said to all the Aigyptians, “Go to Jōsēph, and do whatever he says to you.”

56 And the famine was over all the face of the earth; and Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold to the Egyptians; and the famine grown severe in the land of Egypt.

56 And the famine was over the face of all the land, and Jōsēph opened all the granaries and was selling to all the Aigyptians. 56 And the famine was over the face of all the land, and Jōsēph opened all the granaries and was selling to all the Aigyptians.

57 And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy grain; because that the famine was so severe in all lands.

57 And all the countries came into Aigypt to Jōsēph to buy, for the famine prevailed in all the land. 57 And all the countries came into Aigypt to Jōsēph to buy, for the famine prevailed in all the land.
