Joseph’s Brothers Sent to Egypt
1 Now when Jacōb saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacōb said to his sons, “Why do you look one on another?”
1 Now when he saw that there was a sale in Aigypt, Jacōb said to his sons, “Why are you idle? | 1 Now when he saw that there was a sale in Aigypt, Jacōb said to his sons, “Why are you idle? |
2 And he said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt: get down to that place, and buy for us from there; that we may live, and not die.”
2 Look! I have heard that there is grain in Aigypt; go down there, and purchase a few food for us in order that we may live and not die.” | 2 Look! I have heard that there is grain in Aigypt; go down there, and purchase a few food for us in order that we may live and not die.” |
3 And Joseph’s ten brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt.
3 And the ten brothers of Jōsēph went down to purchase grain from Aigypt. | 3 And the ten brothers of Jōsēph went down to purchase grain from Aigypt. |
4 But Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, Jacōb sent not with his brothers; for he said, “Lest perhaps mischief befall him.”
4 But he didn’t send Jōsēph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, “Lest perhaps sickness befall him.” | 4 But he didn’t send Jōsēph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, “Lest perhaps sickness befall him.” |
5 And the sons of Israēl came to buy grain among those who came; for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
5 And the sons of Israēl went to buy with those who were coming, for the famine was in Chanaan-land. | 5 And the sons of Israēl went to buy with those who were coming, for the famine was in Chanaan-land. |
6 And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was who sold to all the people of the land; and Joseph’s brothers came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.
6 Now Jōsēph was ruler of the land; this one was selling to all the people of the land. And when Jōsēph’s brothers came, they did obeisance to him with face on the ground. | 6 Now Jōsēph was ruler of the land; this one was selling to all the people of the land. And when Jōsēph’s brothers came, they did obeisance to him with face on the ground. |
7 And Joseph saw his brothers, and he knew them, but made himself strange to them, and spoke roughly to them; and he said to them, “From where do you come?” And they said, “From the land of Canaan to buy food.”

7 And when Jōsēph saw his brothers, he recognized them, and he was disguising himself from them and spoke harshly to them and said to them, “Where have you come from?” And they said, “From the Chanaan-land to buy food.” | 7 And when Jōsēph saw his brothers, he recognized them, and he was disguising himself from them and spoke harshly to them and said to them, “Where have you come from?” And they said, “From Chanaan-land to buy food.” |
8 And Joseph knew his brothers, but they didn’t know him.
8 Now Jōsēph recognized his brothers, but they didn’t recognize him. | 8 Now Jōsēph recognized his brothers, but they didn’t recognize him. |
9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said to them, “You are spies; to see the nakedness of the land are you come.”
9 And Jōsēph remembered the dreams that he himself had seen, and he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to inspect the tracks of the country!” | 9 And Jōsēph remembered the dreams that he himself had seen, and he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to inspect the tracks of the country!” |
10 And they said to him, “No, my lord, but to buy food are your servants come.
10 But they said, “No, sir, your servants came to purchase food. | 10 But they said, “No, sir, your servants came to purchase food. |
11 We are all one man’s sons; we are true men, your servants are no spies.”
11 We are all sons of one man. We are peaceable; your servants are not spies.” | 11 We are all sons of one man. We are peaceable; your servants are not spies.” |
12 And he said to them, “No, but to see the nakedness of the land you are come.”
12 But he said to them, “No, but you came to see the tracks of the land!” | 12 But he said to them, “No, but you came to see the tracks of the land!” |
13 And they said, “Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.”
13 Then they said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers in Chanaan-land, and see, the younger is with our father today, and the other doesn’t exist.” | 13 Then they said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers in Chanaan-land, and see, the younger is with our father today, and the other doesn’t exist.” |
14 And Joseph said to them, “It is as I said to you, saying, “You are spies!”
14 But Jōsēph said to them, “This is what I have said to you, saying, ‛You are spies!’ | 14 But Jōsēph said to them, “This is what I have said to you, saying, ‛You are spies!’ |
15 Hereby you shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh you shall not go forth hence, unless your youngest brother come here.
15 In this you will reveal yourselves: by the health of Pharaō, you shall never depart from this place unless your younger brother comes here. | 15 In this you will reveal yourselves: by the health of Pharaō, you shall never depart from this place unless your younger brother comes here. |
16 Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and you shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely you are spies.”
16 Send one of you, and get your brother; but as for you, may you be led away until your words become verified, whether you are telling the truth or not; otherwise, by the health of Pharaō, certainly you are spies.” | 16 Send one of you, and get your brother; but as for you, may you be led away until your words become verified, whether you are telling the truth or not; otherwise, by the health of Pharaō, certainly you are spies.” |
17 And he put them altogether into ward three days.
17 And he put them in prison for three days. | 17 And he put them in prison for three days. |
18 And Joseph said to them the third day, “This do, and live; for I fear God.
18 And on the third day, he said to them “This do, and you shall live, for I fear God. | 18 And on the third day, he said to them “This do, and you shall live, for I fear God. |
19 If you are true men, let one of your brothers be bound in the house of your prison: go, carry grain for the famine of your houses.
19 If you are peaceable, let one brother of you be confined in the prison, but you yourselves go, and take away the purchase of your grain allowance, | 19 If you are peaceable, let one brother of you be confined in the prison, but you yourselves go, and take away the purchase of your grain allowance, |
20 But bring your youngest brother to me; so shall your words be verified, and you shall not die.” And they did so.

21 And they said to one another, “We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come on us.”
21 And each one said to his brother, “Indeed, for we are at fault concerning our brother, because we disregarded the affliction of his soul, when he pleaded with us, and we didn’t listen to him. This is why this affliction has come on us.” | 21 And each one said to his brother, “Indeed, for we are at fault concerning our brother, because we disregarded the affliction of his soul, when he pleaded with us, and we didn’t listen to him. 22 And Reuben answered them, saying, “Didn’t I speak to you, saying, ‘Do not sin against the child’; and you would not hear? Therefore, behold, also his blood is required.”

22 When Rhoubēn answered, he said to them, “Didn’t I speak to you, saying, ‛Don’t injure the youngster?’ And you didn’t listen to me. 23 And they didn’t know that Jōsēph understood them; for he spoke to them by an interpreter.
