Joseph’s Success in Egypt
1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down to that place.
1 Now Jōsēph was brought down to Aigypt, and Petephrēs, the eunuch of Pharaō, a chief cook, an Aigypt, acquired him from the hand of the Ismaēlites, who had brought him down there. | 1 Now Jōsēph was brought down to Aigypt, and Petephrēs, the eunuch of Pharaō, a chief cook, an Aigypt, acquired him from the hand of the Ismaēlites, who had brought him down there. |
2 And Yahweh was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
2 And the Lord was with Jōsēph, and he was a successful man, and he was in the home with the Aigypt master. | 2 And the Lord was with Jōsēph, and he was a successful man, and he was in the home with his Aigypt master. |
3 And his master saw that Yahweh was with him, and that Yahweh made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
3 And his master knew that the Lord was with him and the Lord is prospering in his hands whatever he did. | 3 And his master knew that the Lord was with him and the Lord is prospering in his hands whatever he did. |
4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
4 And Jōsēph found favour before his master, and he was well pleased with him and appointed him over his house and gave everything that he had into Jōsēph’s hand. | 4 And Jōsēph found favour before his master, and he was well pleased with him and appointed him over his house and gave everything that he had into Jōsēph’s hand. |
5 And it happened from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that Yahweh blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of Yahweh was on all that he had in the house, and in the field.
5 Now it happened after he had been appointed over his house and over everything that he had, that then the Lord blessed the Aigypt’s house for Jōsēph’s sake, and the Lord’s blessing was on all his possessions in the house and in the field. | 5 Now it happened after he had been appointed over his house and over everything that he had, that then the Lord blessed the Aigypt’s house for Jōsēph’s sake, and the Lord’s blessing was on all his possessions in the house and in the field. |
6 And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he didn’t know anything he had, except the bread which he ate. And Joseph was a good person, and well favoured.

6 And he entrusted everything that he had into Jōsēph’s hands, and he wasn’t acquainted with any of his own affairs except the bread that he was eating. And Jōsēph was handsome in physique and very pleasing in appearance. | 6 And he entrusted everything that he had into Jōsēph’s hands, and he wasn’t acquainted with any of his own affairs except the bread that he was eating. And Jōsēph was handsome in physique and very pleasing in appearance. |
7 And it happened after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph; and she said, “Lie with me.”
7 And it happened after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes on Jōsēph and said, “Lie with me.” | 7 And it happened after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes on Jōsēph and said, “Lie with me.” |
8 But he refused, and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, my master doesn’t know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand;
8 But he didn’t want to, and he said to his master’s wife, “If, because of me, my master wasn’t acquainted with anything in his house and he gave everything that he has into my hands | 8 But he didn’t want to, and he said to his master’s wife, “If, because of me, my master wasn’t acquainted with anything in his house and he gave everything that he has into my hands |
9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
9 and nothing in this household is above me nor has he excluded anything from me except you, because you are his wife, and how shall I do this evil thing and sin against God?” | 9 and nothing in this household is above me nor has he excluded anything from me except you, because you are his wife, and how shall I do this evil thing and sin against God?” |
10 And it happened, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he didn’t listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
10 And when she kept speaking to Jōsēph day after day, then he didn’t submit to her to sleep with her in order to be intimate with her. | 10 And when she kept speaking to Jōsēph day after day, then he didn’t submit to her to sleep with her in order to be intimate with her. |
11 And it happened about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
11 Now it happened on such a day, Jōsēph went into the house to do his tasks, and no one of those in the household was inside, | 11 Now it happened on such a day, Jōsēph went into the house to do his tasks, and no one of those in the household was inside, |
12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me”; and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got out.

12 and she dragged him by his garments, saying, “Lie with me!” And leaving his garments behind in her hands, he fled and went outside. | 12 and she dragged him by his garments, saying, “Lie with me!” And leaving his garments behind in her hands, he fled and went outside. |
13 And it happened, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
13 Then it happened as she saw that he had left his garments behind in her hands and had fled and gone outside, | 13 Then it happened as she saw that he had left his garments behind in her hands and had fled and gone outside, |
14 That she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to mock us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice.
14 and she called those who were in her household and spoke to them, saying, “Look! he has brought to us a Hebrew to mock us! He came in to me, saying, ‛Lie with me,’ and I shouted with a loud voice. | 14 and she called those who were in her household and spoke to them, saying, “Look! he has brought to us a Hebrew to mock us! He came in to me, saying, ‛Lie with me,’ and I shouted with a loud voice. |
15 And it happened, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got out.”
15 And when he heard that I raised my voice and shouted. After he left his garments behind with me, he fled and went outside.” | 15 And when he heard that I raised my voice and shouted. After he left his garments behind with me, he fled and went outside.” |
16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.
16 And she left his garments beside her until the master came into his home. | 16 And she left his garments beside her until the master came into his home. |
17 And she spoke to him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought to us, came in to me to mock me.
17 And she spoke with him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you brought in to us, came in to me to mock me and said to me, ‛I will lie with you.’ | 17 And she spoke with him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you brought in to us, came in to me to mock me and said to me, ‛I will lie with you.’ |
18 And it happened, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.”
18 But when he heard that I raised my voice and shouted, he left his garments behind with me and fled and went outside.” | 18 But when he heard that I raised my voice and shouted, he left his garments behind with me and fled and went outside.” |
Joseph Imprisoned
19 And it happened, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “After this manner did your servant to me”; that his wrath was kindled.
19 Now it happened when his master heard the words of his wife that she spoke to him, saying, “Thus your servant did to me,” that then he was incensed with anger. | 19 Now it happened when his master heard the words of his wife that she spoke to him, saying, “Thus your servant did to me,” that then he was incensed with anger. |
20 And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound; and he was there in the prison.
20 And after Jōsēph’s master took him, he threw him into the prison, into the place in which the king’s prisōners are confined, there in the prison. | 20 And after Jōsēph’s master took him, he threw him into the prison, into the place in which the king’s prisōners are confined, there in the prison. |
21 But Yahweh was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
21 And the Lord was with Jōsēph and poured down mercy on him, and he gave him favour before the chief jailer, | 21 And the Lord was with Jōsēph and poured down mercy on him, and he gave him favour before the chief jailer, |
22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatever they did there, it was his doing.
22 and the chief jailer gave the prison into Jōsēph’s hand, and all who had been led away, as many as were in the prison, and everything that they were doing there. | 22 and the chief jailer gave the prison into Jōsēph’s hand, and all who had been led away, as many as were in the prison, and everything that they were doing there. |
23 The keeper of the prison looked not to anything that was under his hand; because Yahweh was with him, and what he did, Yahweh made it to prosper.
23 The chief jailer of the prison was not aware of anything because of him, for everything was under Jōsēph’s control, because the Lord was with him, and whatever he would do, the Lord would prosper in his hands. | 23 The chief jailer of the prison was not aware of anything because of him, for everything was under Jōsēph’s control, because the Lord was with him, and whatever he would do, the Lord would prosper in his hands. |
