Chapter 50

God Helps His Servant

1 Thus says Yahweh, Where is the bill of your mother’s divorcement, whom I have put away? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have you sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.

1 οὕτως λέγει κύριος ποῖον τὸ βιβλίον τοῦ ἀποστασίου τῆς μητρὸς ὑμῶν, ἐξαπέστειλα αὐτήν;
τίνι ὑπόχρεῳ πέπρακα ὑμᾶς;
1 οὕτως λέγει Κύριος· ποῖον τὸ βιβλίον τοῦ ἀποστασίου τῆς μητρὸς ὑμῶν, ἐξαπέστειλα αὐτήν;
τίνι ὑπόχρεῳ πέπρακα ὑμᾶς;
1 Thus says the Lord: Of what kind was your mother’s bill of divorce with which I sent her away?
Or to which creditor have I sold you?
Look! For you were sold for your sins, and I sent away your mother for your acts of lawlessness.
1 Thus says the Lord: Of what kind was your mother’s bill of divorce with which I sent her away?
Or to which creditor have I sold you?
Look! For you were sold for your sins, and I sent away your mother for your acts of lawlessness.

2 Wherfore, when I came, was there no man? When I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinks, because there is no water, and dies for thirst.

2 τί ὅτι ἦλθον καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἄνθρωπος;
ἐκάλεσα καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὑπακούων;
μὴ οὐκ ἰσχύει χείρ μου τοῦ ῥύσασθαι;
οὐκ ἰσχύω τοῦ ἐξελέσθαι;
2 τί ὅτι ἦλθον καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἄνθρωπος;
ἐκάλεσα καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὑπακούων;
μὴ οὐκ ἰσχύει χείρ μου τοῦ ῥύσασθαι οὐκ ἰσχύω τοῦ ἐξελέσθαι;
2 For what reason did I come and no man was there?
I called, and why did no one respond?
Is my hand not strong to deliver?
Or am I not strong to rescue?
Look! By my threat I will make the sea desolate, and I will make rivers deserts, and their fish shall be dried up because there is no water, and they will die by thirst.

Is my hand not strong to deliver?
Or am I not strong to rescue?

3 I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.

3 And I will clothe the sky with darkness and make its covering like sackcloth. 3 And I will clothe the sky with darkness and make its covering like sackcloth.

4 The Adonai Yahweh has given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary: he wakens morning by morning, he wakens my ear to hear as the learned.

4 The Lord gives me the tongue of instruction, to know in time when it is necessary to speak a word.
He entrusted it to me in the morning; he added to me an ear to hear.
4 The Lord gives me the tongue of instruction, to know in time when it is necessary to speak a word.
He entrusted it to me in the morning; he added to me an ear to hear.

5 The Adonai Yahweh has opened my ear, and I wasn’t rebellious, neither turned away back.

5 And the instruction of the Lord opens my ears, and I don’t disobey nor contradict. 5 and the instruction of the Lord, even the Lord, opens my ears, and I don’t disobey nor contradict.

6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to those who plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

6 I have given my back to whips and my jaw to punches, but I didn’t turn away my face from the shame of spittings. 6 I have given my back to whips and my jaw to punches, but I didn’t turn away my face from the shame of spittings.

7 For Adonai Yahweh will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded; therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

7 And the Lord became my helper; therefore I was not humiliated, but I have set my face like solid rock, and I knew that I would not be put to shame, 7 And the Lord, even the Lord became a helper for me; therefore I was not humiliated, but I have set my face like solid rock, and I knew that I would not be put to shame,

8 He is near that justifies me; who will contend with me? Let’s stand together: who is my adversary? Let him come near to me.

8 ὅτι ἐγγίζει δικαιώσας με· τίς κρινόμενός μοι;
ἀντιστήτω μοι ἅμα· καὶ τίς κρινόμενός μοι;
τίς κρινόμενός μοι;
ἀντιστήτω μοι ἅμα· καὶ τίς κρινόμενός μοι;
8 because he who justified me draws near.
Who is the one who contends with me?
Let him confront me at once.
Yes, who is the one who contends with me?
Let him draw near to me.
8 because he who justified me draws near.
Who is the one who contends with me?
Let him confront me at once.
Yes, who is the one who contends with me?
Let him draw near to me.

9 Behold, Adonai Yahweh will help me; who is he who shall condemn me? Lo, they all shall grow old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.

9 ἰδοὺ κύριος βοηθεῖ μοι· τίς κακώσει με;
9 ἰδοὺ Κύριος Κύριος βοηθήσει μοι· τίς κακώσει με;
9 Look! The Lord helps me; who will harm me?
Look! All of you will become old like a garment, and as it were a moth will devour you.
9 Look! The Lord, even the Lord helps me; who will harm me?
Look! All of you will become old like a garment, and as it were a moth will devour you.

10 Who is among you who fears Yahweh, that obeys the voice of his servant, that walks in darkness, and has no light? Let him trust in the name of Yahweh, and stay on his God.

10 τίς ἐν ὑμῖν φοβούμενος τὸν κύριον;
10 Τίς ἐν ὑμῖν φοβούμενος τὸν Κύριον;
10 Who among you is the one who fears the Lord?
Let him hear the voice of his servant.
Those who walk in darkness have no light for them; trust in the name of the Lord, and lean on God.
10 Who among you is the one who fears the Lord?
Let him hear the voice of his servant.
Those who walk in darkness have no light for them; trust in the name of the Lord, and lean on God.

11 Behold, all you who kindle a fire, that surround yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that you have kindled.
This you shall have of my hand; you shall lie down in sorrow.

11 Look! All of you, ignite a fire, and make a flame stronger.
Walk by the light of your fire and by the flame you have ignited.
Because of me, these things came on you; you shall lie down in sorrow.
11 Look! All of you, ignite a fire, and make a flame stronger.
Walk by the light of your fire and by the flame you have ignited.
Because of me, these things came on you; you shall lie down in sorrow.
