Israēl Exhorted
1 Listen to me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek Yahweh: look to the rock from which you are hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you are dug.
1
Listen to me, you who aspire to what is righteous, and who seek the Lord.
Look to the solid rock that you hewed and to the hole of the pit that you dug. |
1
Listen to me, you who aspire to what is righteous, and who seek the Lord.
Look to the solid rock that you hewed and to the hole of the pit that you dug. |
2 Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who gave birth to you; for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.
2 Look to Abraham your father and to Sarrha who laboured in giving you birth; because he was only one, and I called him and blessed him and loved him and multiplied him. | 2 Look to Abraham your father and to Sarrha who laboured in giving you birth; because he was only one, and I called him and blessed him and loved him and multiplied him. |
3 For Yahweh shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of Yahweh; joy and gladness shall be found in it, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.
3 And now I will comfort you, Siōn; I comforted all her desolate places, and I will make her desolate places like the garden of the Lord; they will find joy and gladness in her, thanksgiving and the voice of praise. | 3 And now I will comfort you, Siōn; I comforted all her desolate places, and I will make her desolate places like the garden of the Lord; they will find joy and gladness in her, thanksgiving and the voice of praise. |
4 Listen to me, my people; and give ear to me, Oh my nation; for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.
4 Hear me; hear, my people, and kings, listen to me, because a law will go out from me, and my judgment for a light to nations. | 4 Hear me; hear, my people, and kings, listen to me, because a law will go out from me, and my judgment for a light to nations. |
5 My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and my arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait on me, and on my arm shall they trust.
5 My righteousness draws near swiftly; my salvation will go out like a light, and the nations will hope in my arm; the islands will wait for me and hope in my arm. | 5 My righteousness draws near swiftly; my salvation will go out like a light, and the nations will hope in my arm; the islands will wait for me and hope in my arm. |
6
Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look on the earth beneath; for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall grow old like a garment, and they who dwell in it shall die in like manner; but my salvation shall be forever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.
6 Lift up your eyes to heaven, and look at the ground beneath, because the sky was strengthened like smoke, and the ground will become old like a garment, and those who live on the land will die like these things, but my salvation will be forever, and my righteousness won’t fail. | 6 Lift up your eyes to heaven, and look at the ground beneath, because the sky was strengthened like smoke, and the ground will become old like a garment, and those who live on the land will die like these things, but my salvation will be forever, and my righteousness won’t fail. |
7 Listen to me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; don’t fear the reproach of men, neither be afraid of their revilings.
7 Hear me, you who know judgment, my people, where my law is in your heart; don’t fear the reproach of men, and don’t be dismayed by their contempt. | 7 Hear me, you who know judgment, my people, where my law is in your heart; don’t fear the reproach of men, and don’t be dismayed by their contempt. |
8 For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool; but my righteousness shall be forever, and my salvation from generation to generation.
8 For just as a garment it will be devoured by time, and like wool it will be devoured by a moth, but my righteousness will be forever and my salvation for generations of generations. | 8 For just as a garment it will be devoured by time, and like wool it will be devoured by a moth, but my righteousness will be forever and my salvation for generations of generations. |
9 Awake, awake, put on strength, Oh arm of Yahweh; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Are you not it that has cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?

Awake, awake, Oh Jerousalēm; wear the strength of your arm!
Awake, as at the beginning of a day, like a generation of long ago! Are you not |

Awake, awake, Oh Jerousalēm; wear the strength of your arm!
Awake, as at the beginning of a day, like a generation of long ago! Are you not |
10 Are you not it which has dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that has made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over?

10 she who made desolate the sea, the water, the abundance of the deep, who made the depths of the sea a way of passage for those being rescued | 10 she who made desolate the sea, the water, the abundance of the deep, who made the depths of the sea a way of passage for those being rescued |
11 Therefore the redeemed of Yahweh shall return, and come with singing to Zion; and everlasting joy shall be on their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.
11

and those who have been ransomed? For by the Lord they shall be returned and come into Siōn with joy and everlasting gladness; for gladness and praise shall be on their heads and joy shall seize them; pain and sorrow and sighing have fled away. |
11
and those who have been ransomed? For by the Lord they shall be returned and come into Siōn with joy and everlasting gladness; for gladness and praise shall be on their heads and joy shall seize them; pain and sorrow and sighing have fled away. |
12 I, even I, am he who comforts you: who are you, that you should be afraid of a man who shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass;
12
I am, I am the one who comforts you.
Know of whom you were afraid; you were afraid of a mortal man and a son of man, who have dried up like grass. |
12
I am, I am the one who comforts you.
Know of whom you were afraid; you were afraid of a mortal man and a son of man, who have dried up like grass. |
13 And forget Yahweh your maker, that has stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and have feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? And where is the fury of the oppressor?
13
And you have forgotten God the one who made you, who made the sky and laid the foundations of the land.
And always, all the days, you feared the face of the wrath of the one who was oppressing you, for in the manner he planned to do away with you, and where now is the wrath of the one who was oppressing you? |
13
And you have forgotten God the one who made you, who made the sky and laid the foundations of the land.
And always, all the days, you feared the face of the wrath of the one who was oppressing you, for in the manner he planned to do away with you, and where now is the wrath of the one who was oppressing you? |
14 The captive exile hastens that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.
14 For when you are saved, he won’t stand nor delay, | 14 For when you are saved, he won’t stand nor delay, |
15 But I am Yahweh your Elohim, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: Yahweh of armies is his name.
15 because I am your God, who agitates the sea and makes its waves to roar–the Lord Sabaōth is my name. | 15 because I am your God, who agitates the sea and makes its waves to roar–the Lord Sabaōth is my name. |
16 And I have put my words in your mouth, and I have covered you in the shadow of my hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say to Zion, You are my people.
16
I will put my words ito your mouth and shelter you under the shadow of my hand, by which I established the sky and laid the foundations of the land.
And he will say to Siōn, “You are my people.” |
16
I will put my words ito your mouth and shelter you under the shadow of my hand, by which I established the sky and laid the foundations of the land.
And he will say to Siōn, “You are my people.” |
17 Awake, awake, stand up, Oh Jerusalem, which have drunk at the hand of Yahweh the cup of his fury; you have drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.
17 Awake, awake! Stand up, Oh Jerousalēm, you who have drunk the cup of his wrath from the hand of the Lord, for you drank dry and emptied out the cup of havoc and the drinking cup of wrath. | 17 Awake, awake! Stand up, Oh Jerousalēm, you who have drunk the cup of his wrath from the hand of the Lord, for you drank dry and emptied out the cup of havoc and the drinking cup of wrath. |
18 There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she has brought forth; neither is there any that takes her by the hand of all the sons that she has brought up.
18 And there was none who comforted you from among all your children whom you have given birth, and there was none who held your hand, not even from among all your sons, whom you have raised. | 18 And there was none who comforted you from among all your children whom you have given birth, and there was none who held your hand, not even from among all your sons, whom you have raised. |
19 These two things are come to you; who shall be sorry for you? Desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort you?

20
Your sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of Yahweh, the rebuke of your God.
20 Your sons are the ones perplexed, who lie down at the head of every exit like a half-cooked beet, who are full of the wrath of the Lord, become exhausted by the Lord God. | 20 Your sons are the ones perplexed, who lie down at the head of every exit like a half-cooked beet, who are full of the wrath of the Lord, become exhausted by the Lord God. |
21 Therefore hear now this, you afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine.
21 Therefore hear, you who are humbled, who are drunk, but not with wine. | 21 Therefore hear, you who are humbled, who are drunk, but not with wine. |
22 Thus says your Lord Yahweh, and your God that pleads the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of your hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; you shall no more drink it again.
22 Thus says the Lord God, who judges his people: Look! I have received from your hand the cup of havoc, the drinking cup of wrath, and you shall not continue to drink it any longer. | 22 Thus says the Lord God, who judges his people: Look! I have received from your hand the cup of havoc, the drinking cup of wrath, and you shall not continue to drink it any longer. |
23 But I will put it into the hand of those who afflict you; which have said to your soul, Bow down, that we may go over; and you have laid your body as the ground, and as the street, to those who went over.
23 And I will put it into the hands of those who have wronged you and humbled you, who have said to your soul, “Bow down, in order that we may pass by,” and you put your back level to the ground, outside, for those who were going by. | 23 And I will put it into the hands of those who have wronged you and humbled you, who have said to your soul, “Bow down, in order that we may pass by,” and you put your back level to the ground, outside, for those who were going by. |
