Isaiah

1 Listen, Oh isles, to me; and listen, you people, from far; Yahweh has called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother has he made mention of my name.

2 And he has made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand has he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver has he hid me;

2 καὶ ἔθηκεν τὸ στόμα μου ὡσεὶ μάχαιραν ὀξεῖαν καὶ ὑπὸ τὴν σκέπην τῆς χειρὸς αὐτοῦ ἔκρυψέν με, ἔθηκέν με ὡς βέλος ἐκλεκτὸν καὶ ἐν τῇ φαρέτρᾳ αὐτοῦ ἐσκέπασέν με.	2 καὶ ἔθηκε τὸ στόμα μου ὡσεὶ μάχαιραν ὀξεῖαν καὶ ὑπὸ τὴν σκέπην τῆς χειρὸς αὐτοῦ ἔκρυψέ με, ἔθηκέ με ὡς βέλος ἐκλεκτὸν καὶ ἐν τῇ φαρέτρᾳ αὐτοῦ ἔκρυψέ με.

3 And said to me, You are my servant, Oh Israēl, in whom I will be glorified.

4 Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with Yahweh, and my work with my God.

4 καὶ ἐγὼ εἶπα κενῶς ἐκοπίασα καὶ εἰς μάταιον καὶ εἰς οὐδὲν ἔδωκα τὴν ἰσχύν μου· διὰ τοῦτο ἡ κρίσις μου παρὰ κυρίῳ, καὶ ὁ πόνος μου ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ μου.	4 καὶ ἐγὼ εἶπα· κενῶς ἐκοπίασα, εἰς μάταιον καὶ εἰς οὐδὲν ἔδωκα τὴν ἰσχύν μου· διὰ τοῦτο ἡ κρίσις μου παρὰ Κυρίῳ, καὶ ὁ πόνον μου ἐναντίον τοῦ Θεοῦ μου.

5 And now, says Yahweh that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacōb again to him, Though Israēl isn’t gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of Yahweh, and my God shall be my strength.

6 And he said, It is a light thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacōb, and to restore the preserved of Israēl: I will also give you for a light to the Gentiles, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth.

6 καὶ εἶπέν μοι μέγα σοὶ ἐστιν τοῦ κληθῆναί σὲ παῖδά μου τοῦ στῆσαι τὰς φυλὰς Ἰακὼβ καὶ τὴν διασπορὰν τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἐπιστρέψαι· ἰδοὺ τέθεικά σὲ εἰς διαθήκην γένους εἰς φῶς ἐθνῶν τοῦ εἶναί σὲ εἰς σωτηρίαν ἕως ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς.	6 καὶ εἶπέ μοι· μέγα σοὶ ἔστι τοῦ κληθῆναί σε παῖδά μου τοῦ στῆσαι τὰς φυλὰς Ἰακὼβ καὶ τὴν διασπορὰν τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἐπιστρέψαι· ἰδοὺ δέδωκά σε εἰς διαθήκην γένους, εἰς φῶς ἐθνῶν τοῦ εἶναί σε εἰς σωτηρίαν ἕως ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς.–
6 And he said to me, “It is a great thing for you to be called my servant so that you may set up the tribes of Jakōb and turn back the dispersion of Israēl. Look! 7 Thus says Yahweh, the Redeemer of Israēl, and his Holy One, to him whom man despises, to him whom the nation abhors, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of Yahweh that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israēl, and he shall choose you.

8 Thus says Yahweh, In an acceptable time have I heard you, and in a day of salvation have I helped you; and I will preserve you, and give you for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;

9 saying to those who are in bonds, “Come out,” and to those who are in darkness that they be revealed. 10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them; for he who has mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water he shall guide them.

12 Behold, these shall come from far: and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.

13 Sing, Oh heavens; and be joyful, Oh earth; and break forth into singing, Oh mountains; for Yahweh has comforted his people, and will have mercy on his afflicted.

13 εὐφραίνεσθε, οὐρανοί, καὶ ἀγαλλιάσθω ἡ γῆ, ῥηξάτωσαν τὰ ὄρη εὐφροσύνην καὶ οἱ βουνοὶ δικαιοσύνην, ὅτι ἠλέησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς ταπεινοὺς τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ παρεκάλεσεν.	13 εὐφραίνεσθαι, οὐρανοί, καὶ ἀγαλλιάσθω, ἡ γῆ, ῥηξάτωσαν τὰ ὄρη εὐφροσύνην, ὅτι ἠλέησεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς ταπεινοὺς τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ παρεκάλεσεν.–

14 But Zion said, Yahweh has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me.

15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have mercy on the son of her womb? Yes, they may forget, yet will I not forget you.

15 Will a woman forget her child so as not to have mercy on the descendants of her womb? 16 Behold, I have engraven you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.

16 ἰδοὺ ἐπὶ τῶν χειρῶν μου ἐζωγράφησά σου τὰ τείχη, καὶ ἐνώπιόν μου εἶ διὰ παντός·	16 ἰδοὺ ἐπὶ τῶν χειρῶν μου ἐζωγράφηκά σου τὰ τείχη, καὶ ἐνώπιόν μου εἶ διαπαντός·

17 Your children shall make haste; your destroyers and they who made you waste shall go forth of you.

18 Lift up your eyes all around, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to you. As I live, says Yahweh, you shall surely clothe you with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on you, as a bride does.

18 ἆρον κύκλῳ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου καὶ ἰδὲ πάντας, ἰδοὺ συνήχθησαν καὶ ἤλθοσαν πρὸς σέ· ζῶ ἐγώ, λέγει κύριος, ὅτι πάντας αὐτοὺς ἐνδύσῃ καὶ περιθήσῃ αὐτοὺς ὡς κόσμον νύμφης.	18 ἆρον κύκλῳ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου καὶ ἰδὲ πάντας, ἰδοὺ συνήχθησαν καὶ ἤλθοσαν πρός σε· ζῶ ἐγώ, λέγει Κύριος, ὅτι πάντας αὐτοὺς ὡς κόσμον ἐνδύσῃ καὶ περιθήσῃ αὐτοὺς ὡς κόσμον νύμφης.
18 Lift up your eyes all around, and see them all. Look! They have gathered and have come to you. 19 For your waste and your desolate places, and the land of your destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and they who swallowed you up shall be far away.

20 The children which you shall have, after you have lost the other, shall say again in your ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.

21 Then you shall say in your heart, Who has fathered me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? And who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been?

21 And you will say in your heart, “Who has fathered these for me? But I was childless and a widow, so who has reared these for me? 22 Thus says Adonai Yahweh, Behold, I will lift up my hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people; and they shall bring your sons in their arms, and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders.

22 Thus says the Lord: Look! I am lifting up my hand to the nations, and I will lift my signal to the islands, and they shall bring your sons in their bosom, and your daughters shall they carry on their shoulders.	22 Thus says the Lord: Look! 23 And kings shall be your nursing fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers: they shall bow down to you with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of your feet; and you shall know that I am Yahweh; for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.

24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?
