Israēl’s Obstinacy

1 Hear this, Oh house of Jacōb, which are called by the name of Israēl, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of Yahweh, and make mention of Elohim of Israēl, but not in truth, nor in righteousness.

1 Hear these things, Oh house of Jakōb, who are called by the name of Israēl and who came forth out of Jouda, who swear by the name of the Lord God of Israēl, remembering it, not with truth nor with righteousness, 1 Hear these things, Oh house of Jakōb, who are called by the name of Israēl and who came forth out of Jouda, who swear by the name of the Lord God of Israēl, remembering it, not with truth nor with righteousness,

2 For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves on Elohim of Israēl; Yahweh of armies is his name.

2 and clinging to the name of the holy city and supported on the God of Israēl; the Lord Sabaōth is his name. 2 and clinging to the name of the holy city and supported on the God of Israēl; the Lord Sabaōth is his name.

3 I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I showed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass.

3 The former things I have already declared, and they went out from my mouth and came to be heard; suddenly I did them, and they came to be. 3 The former things I have already declared, and they went out from my mouth and came to be heard; suddenly I did them, and they came to be.

4 Because I knew that you are obstinate, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your brow bronze;

4 I know that you are stubborn, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your forehead copper-alloy, 4 I know that you are stubborn, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your forehead copper-alloy,

5 I have even from the beginning declared it to you; before it happened I showed it you: lest you should say, My idol has done them, and my carved image, and my molten image, has commanded them.

5 and I declared to you the things of old; before they came on you I made them to be heard by you; don’t say, “The idols did them for me,” and don’t say, “The carved and the cast images commanded me.” 5 and I declared to you the things of old; before they came on you I made them to be heard by you; don’t say, “The idols did them for me,” and don’t say, “The carved and the cast images commanded me.”

6 You have heard, see all this; and won’t you declare it? I have shown you new things from this time, even hidden things, and you didn’t know them.

6 You have heard all things, and you yourselves have not known.
But I have also made to be heard by you, the new things from now on that shall come to be; yet you didn’t speak.
6 You have heard all things, and you yourselves have not known.
But I have also made to be heard by you, the new things from now on that shall come to be; yet you didn’t speak.

7 They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when you heard them not; lest you should say, Behold, I knew them.

7 Now they are coming to be, not long ago; in former days you didn’t hear of them; don’t say, “Yes, I know them.” 7 Now they are coming to be, not long ago; in former days you didn’t hear of them; don’t say, “Yes, I know them.”

8 Yes, you didn’t hear; yes, you didn’t know; yes, from that time that your ear wasn’t opened; for I knew that you would deal very treacherously, and were called a transgressor from the womb.

8 You have neither known nor understood, nor did I open your ears from the beginning.
Because I knew that while rejecting, you would reject, and that evening from the womb you would be called a lawless one.
8 You have neither known nor understood, nor did I open your ears from the beginning.
Because I knew that while rejecting, you would reject, and that evening from the womb you would be called a lawless one.

9 For my name’s sake will I defer my anger, and for my praise will I restrain for you, that I cut you not off.

9 For my name’s sake I will show you my wrath; and I will bring my glorious things on you in order that I may not destroy you. 9 For my name’s sake I will show you my wrath; and I will bring my glorious things on you in order that I may not destroy you.

10 Behold, I have refined you, but not with silver; I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction.

10 Look! I have sold you, not for silver, but I rescued you from the furnace of poverty. 10 Look! I have sold you, not for silver, but I rescued you from the furnace of poverty.

11 For my own sake, even for my own sake, will I do it; for how should my name be polluted? And I won’t give my glory to another.

11 For my sake, I will do this to you, because my name is being profaned, and I won’t give my glory to another. 11 For my sake, I will do this to you, because my name is being profaned, and I won’t give my glory to another.

Deliverance Promised

12 Listen to me, Oh Jacōb and Israēl, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.

12 Hear me, Oh Jakōb and Israēl, whom I call; I am first, and I am forever. 12 Hear me, Oh Jakōb and Israēl, whom I call; I am first, and I am forever.

13 My hand also has laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand has spanned the heavens: when I call to them, they stand up together.

13 And my hand laid the foundation of the land, and my right hand established the sky; I will call them, and they will stand together. 13 And my hand laid the foundation of the land, and my right hand established the sky; I will call them, and they will stand together.

14 All you, assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them has declared these things? Yahweh has loved him: he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans.

τίς αὐτοῖς ἀνήγγειλεν ταῦτα;
τίς αὐτοῖς ἀνήγγειλε ταῦτα;
14 And all of them will be gathered and hear.
Who has declared these things to them?
While I love you, I have done your will on Babylōn, to do away with the offspring of the Chaldeans.
14 And all of them will be gathered and hear.
Who has declared these things to them?
While I love you, I have done your will on Babylōn, to do away with the offspring of the Chaldeans.

15 I, even I, have spoken; yes, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.

15 I have spoken; I have called, I brought him and made his way prosperous. 15 I have spoken; I have called, I brought him and made his way prosperous.

16 Come you near to me, hear you this; I haven’t spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I; and now Adonai Yahweh, and his Spirit, has sent me.

16 Draw near to me, and hear these things.
From the beginning I have not spoken in secret, nor in the darkness of the land; when it came to be, I was there, and now the Lord has sent me and his spirit.
16 Draw near to me, and hear these things.
From the beginning I have not spoken in secret, nor in the darkness of the land; when it came to be, I was there, and now the Lord has sent me and his spirit.

17 Thus says Yahweh, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israēl; I am Yahweh your Elohim which teaches you to profit, which leads you by the way that you should go.

17 Thus says the Lord who rescued you, the Holy One of Israēl. I am your God; I have explained to you how to find the way in which you should go in it. 17 Thus says the Lord who rescued you, the Holy One of Israēl. I am your God; I have explained to you how to find the way in which you should go in it.

18 Oh that you had listened to my commandments! then had your peace been as a river, and your righteousness as the waves of the sea.

18 And if you had heard my commandments, your peace would have become like a river, and your righteousness like a wave of the sea; 18 And if you had heard my commandments, your peace would have become like a river, and your righteousness like a wave of the sea;

19 Your seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of your bowels like the gravel of it; his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me.

19 your offspring would have become like the sand, and the descendants of your womb like the dust of the land.
Now neither will you be destroyed, nor will your name perish before me.
19 your offspring would have become like the sand, and the descendants of your womb like the dust of the land.
Now neither will you be destroyed, nor will your name perish before me.

20 Go you forth of Babylon, flee you from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare you, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say you, Yahweh has redeemed his servant Jacōb.

20 Go out of Babylōn, fleeing from the Chaldeans; announce a sound of joy, and let this be heard; report it to the end of the land; say, “The Lord has rescued his slave Jakōb.” 20 Go out of Babylōn, fleeing from the Chaldeans; announce a sound of joy, and let this be heard; report it to the end of the land; say, “The Lord has rescued his slave Jakōb.”

21 And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts: he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them: he split the rock also, and the waters gushed out.

21 Even if they are thirsty, he will lead them through the wilderness; he will bring forth water out of a rock for them; a rock will be split, and water will flow, and my people will drink. 21 Even if they are thirsty, he will lead them through the wilderness; he will bring forth water out of a rock for them; a rock will be split, and water will flow, and my people will drink.

22 There is no peace, says Yahweh, to the wicked.

22 “There is no rejoicing, for the ungodly.” says the Lord. 22 “There is no rejoicing,” says the Lord, “for the ungodly.”
