Lament for Babylon
1 Come down, and sit in the dust, Oh virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, Oh daughter of the Chaldeans; for you shall no more be called tender and delicate.
1 Come down; sit on the ground, virgin daughter of Babylon. Enter the darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans, because you shall no longer be called tender and spoiled. | 1 Come down; sit on the ground, virgin daughter of Babylon. Enter the darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans, because you shall no longer be called tender and spoiled. |
2 Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover your locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.
2 Take a millstone; grind flour; uncover your covering; uncover your gray hairs; pull up your shins; pass through rivers. | 2 Take a millstone; grind flour; uncover your covering; uncover your gray hairs; pull up your shins; pass through rivers. |
3 Your nakedness shall be uncovered, yes, your shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I won’t meet you as a man.
3
Your shame shall be uncovered; your disgrace shall be seen.
I will take what is right from you; I will no longer deliver you over to men. |
3
Your shame shall be uncovered; your disgrace shall be seen.
I will take what is right from you; I will no longer deliver you over to men. |
4 As for our redeemer, Yahweh of armies is his name, the Holy One of Israēl.
4 He who rescued you–the Lord Sabaōth is his name, the Holy One of Israēl–has said. | 4 He who rescued you–the Lord Sabaōth is his name, the Holy One of Israēl–has said. |
5 Sit silent, and get you into darkness, Oh daughter of the Chaldeans; for you shall no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.
5 Sit stunned; enter the darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans! You shall no more be called the strength of a kingdom. | 5 Sit stunned; enter the darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans! You shall no more be called the strength of a kingdom. |
6 I was wroth with my people, I have polluted my inheritance, and given them into your hand: you did show them no mercy; on the ancient have you very heavily laid your yoke.
6
I was provoked at my people; you defiled my heritage.
I gave them into your hand, but you didn’t give them mercy; you made the yoke of the elder exceedingly heavy. |
6
I was provoked at my people; you defiled my heritage.
I gave them into your hand, but you didn’t give them mercy; you made the yoke of the elder exceedingly heavy. |
7 And you said, I shall be a lady forever; so that you didn’t lay these things to your heart, neither did remember the latter end of it.
7 And you said, “I shall be ruling forever”; you didn’t think these things in your heart, nor did you remember the last things. | 7 And you said, “I shall be ruling forever”; you didn’t think these things in your heart, nor did you remember the last things. |
8 Therefore hear now this, you who are given to pleasures, that dwells carelessly, that say in your heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children.
8 But now hear these things, you spoiled woman, who sits confidently, who says in her heart, “I am, and there is no other; I won’t sit as a widow or know bereavement.” | 8 But now hear these things, you spoiled woman, who sits confidently, who says in her heart, “I am, and there is no other; I won’t sit as a widow or know bereavement.” |
9 But these two things shall come to you in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come on you in their perfection for the multitude of your sorceries, and for the great abundance of your enchantments.
9 But now both these things shall come on you suddenly, in one day: widowhood and childlessness shall come on you suddenly in your sorcery, exceedingly in the strength of your enchanters, | 9 But now both these things shall come on you suddenly, in one day: widowhood and childlessness shall come on you suddenly in your sorcery, exceedingly in the strength of your enchanters, |
10 For you have trusted in your wickedness: you have said, None sees me. Your wisdom and your knowledge, it has perverted you; and you have said in your heart, I am, and none else beside me.
10
τῇ
τῆς
σου.
10
in the hope of your evil, for you said, “I am and there is no other.”
Know that the understanding of these things and your prostitution shall be your shame.
And you said in your heart, “I am, and there is no other.” |
10
in the hope of your evil, for you said, “I am and there is no other.”
Know that the understanding of these things and your prostitution shall be your shame.
And you said in your heart, “I am, and there is no other.” |
11 Therefore shall evil come on you; you shall not know from where it rises; and mischief shall fall on you; you shall not be able to put it off; and desolation shall come on you suddenly, which you shall not know.
11
But destruction shall come on you, and you won’t know it;
a pit, and you shall fall into it.
And misery shall come on you, and you won’t be able to become clear of it, and destruction shall come on you suddenly, and you won’t know it. |
11
But destruction shall come on you, and you won’t know it;
a pit, and you shall fall into it.
And misery shall come on you, and you won’t be able to become clear of it, and destruction shall come on you suddenly, and you won’t know it. |
12 Stand now with your enchantments, and with the multitude of your sorceries, in which you have laboured from your youth; perhaps shall be able to profit, perhaps may prevail.
12 Stand now in your incantations and your abundant sorcery, which you learned from your youth, if you will be able to be benefitted. | 12 Stand now in your incantations and your abundant sorcery, which you learned from your youth, if you will be able to be benefitted. |
13 You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save you from these things that shall come on you.
13 You have become weary with your advices; let the astrologers of the sky stand up and save you, those who look at the stars; let them declare to you what is about to come for you. | 13 You have become weary with your advices; let the astrologers of the sky now stand up and save you, those who look at the stars; let them declare to you what is about to come for you. |
14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
14 Look! They all will all be burned like brushwood on a fire, and they won’t rescue their soul from the flame; since you have coals of fire, sit on them; | 14 Look! They all will all be burned like brushwood on a fire, and they won’t rescue their soul from the flame; since you have coals of fire, sit on them; |
15 Thus shall they be to you with whom you have laboured, even your merchants, from your youth: they shall wander everyone to his quarter; none shall save you.
15
these will be a help to you.
You have become exhausted in your traffic from your youth; a man has deceived by himself, but for you there will be no salvation. |
