Babylon’s Idols and the True God

1 Bel bows down, Nebo stoops, their idols were on the beasts, and on the cattle: your carriages were heavy loaded; they are a burden to the weary beast.

1 Bel has fallen; Dagon has been crushed; their carved images have become things for wild beasts and livestock; you carry them tied up as a burden for the weary; 1 Bel has fallen; Dagon has been crushed; their carved images have become things for wild beasts and livestock; you carry them tied up as a burden for the weary;

2 They stoop, they bow down together; they couldn’t deliver the burden, but themselves are gone into captivity.

2 and the hungry and for the feeble who has no strength, who won’t be able to be saved from war, but they have been led away captive. 2 and the hungry and for the feeble who has no strength, who won’t be able to be saved from war, but they have been led away captive.

3 Listen to me, Oh house of Jacōb, and all the remnant of the house of Israēl, which are given birth by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb.

3 Hear me, Oh house of Jakōb and everyone who remains of Israēl, you who are being carried out of the womb and instructed from a child. 3 Hear me, Oh house of Jakōb and everyone who remains of Israēl, you who are being carried out of the womb and instructed from a child.

4 And even to your old age I am he; and even to grey hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

4 Until old age: I am; and until you grow old: I am; I keep tolerating you; I have made, and I will forgive; I will take up and save you. 4 Until old age: I am; and until you grow old: I am; I keep tolerating you; I have made, and I will forgive; I will take up and save you.

5 To whom will you liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like?

5 τίνι με ὡμοιώσατε;
5 τίνι με ὡμοιώσατε;
5 To whom have you compared me?
Look! Use skill, you who are going astray!
5 To whom have you compared me?
Look! Use skill, you who are going astray!

6 They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he makes it a god: they fall down, yes, they worship.

6 Those who contribute gold from a bag and silver in a balance will set it on a scale, and after they hire a goldsmith, they made fabricated things, and after bowing down they do obeisance to them. 6 Those who contribute gold from a bag and silver in a balance will set it on a scale, and after they hire a goldsmith, they made fabricated things, and after bowing down they do obeisance to them.

7 They bear him on the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he stands; from his place he shall not remove: yes, one shall cry to him, yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.

7 They carry it on their shoulders and go, and if they set it up, it remains in its place; it won’t move.
And whoever shouts to it, it won’t listen; it won’t save him from evil things.
7 They carry it on their shoulders and go, and if they set it up, it remains in its place; it won’t move.
And whoever shouts to it, it won’t listen; it won’t save him from evil things.

8 Remember this, and show yourselves men: bring it again to mind, Oh you transgressors.

8 Remember these things and groan; repent, you who have gone astray; turn in your heart, 8 Remember these things and groan; repent, you who have gone astray; turn in your heart,

9 Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

9 and remember the former things of the past, because I am God, and there is no other apart from me, 9 and remember the former things of the past, because I am God, and there is no other apart from me,

10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.

10 declaring the last things first, before they come to be, and together they are done, and I said, “My whole plan shall stand, and all things I have planned, I will do;” 10 declaring the last things first, before they come to be, and together they are done, and I said, “My whole plan shall stand, and all things I have planned, I will do;”

11 Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man who executes my counsel from a far country: yes, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

11 calling a bird from the east and from a distant land those concerning whom I have planned.
I have spoken and brought it; I have created and made it. I have brought it and prospered its way.
11 calling a bird from the east and from a distant land those concerning whom I have planned.
I have spoken and brought it; I have created and made it. I have brought it and prospered its way.

12 Listen to me, you stouthearted, that are far from righteousness.

12 Hear me, you who have ruined your heart, you who are far from righteousness. 12 Hear me, you who have ruined your heart, you who are far from righteousness.

13 I bring near my righteousness; it shall not be far off, and my salvation shall not stay; and I will place salvation in Zion for Israēl my glory.

13

13 I brought near my righteousness, and I won’t delay the salvation that comes from me; I have given salvation in Siōn to Israēl for glorying. 13 I brought near my righteousness, and I won’t delay the salvation that comes from me; I have given salvation in Siōn to Israēl for glorying.
