1 and all the people were gathered as one man to the wide place before the gate of the water, and they told Esdras the scribe to bring the book of the law of Mōysē, which the Lord commanded Israēl. | 1 And when the seventh month came, and the sons of Israēl were in their cities, and all the people were gathered as one man to the wide place before the gate of the water, and they told Esdras the scribe to bring the book of the law of Mōysē, which the Lord commanded Israēl. |
2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.
2 So Esdras the priest brought the law before the assembly from man to woman and everyone who is understanding to listen, on the first day of the seventh month. | 2 So Esdras the priest brought the law before the assembly from man to woman and everyone who is understanding to listen, on the first day of the seventh month. |
3 And he read in it before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.
3 And he read in it from the hour of the dawning of the sun until the middle of the day, before the men and the women; and they understood it, and the ears of all the people were toward the book of the law. | 3 And he read in it from the hour of the dawning of the sun until the middle of the day, before the men and the women; and they understood it, and the ears of all the people were toward the book of the law. |
4 And Ezra the scribe stood on a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
4 And Esdras the scribe stood on a wooden platform, and next to him stood Mattathias, and Samaias, and Ananias, and Ouria, and Elkia, and Maasaia, on his right hand; and on his left Phadaia, and Misaēl, and Melchias, and Ōsam, and Asabdana, and Zacharias, and Mosollam. | 4 And Esdras the scribe stood on a wooden platform, and next to him stood Mattathias, and Samaias, and Ananias, and Ouria, and Chelkia, and Maasia, on his right hand; and on his left Phadaia, and Misaēl, and Melchias, and Asōm, and Asabadma, and Zacharias, and Mesollam. |
5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up.
5 And Esdras opened the book before all the people – for he was above the people – and it happened when he had opened it, that all the people stood. | 5 And Esdras opened the book before all the people – for he was above the people – and it happened when he had opened it, that all the people stood. |
6 And Ezra blessed Yahweh, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands; and they bowed their heads, and worshipped Yahweh with their faces to the ground.
6 And Esdras blessed the Lord, the great God; and all the people answered, and said, Amen, lifting up their hands. And they bowed down and worshipped the Lord with their face to the ground. | 6 And Esdras blessed the Lord, the great God; and all the people answered, and said, Amen, lifting up their hands. And they bowed down and worshipped the Lord with their face to the ground. |
7 Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law; and the people stood in their place.
7 And Jēsous and Banaias and Sarabia instructed the people in the law, and the people remained in their standing. | 7 And Jēsous and Banaias and Sarabias instructed the people in the law, and the people remained in their standing. |
8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.
8 And they read in the book of the law of God, and Esdras was teaching, and expanding on the knowledge of the Lord, and the people understood the law by the reading. | 8 And they read in the book of the law of God, and Esdras was teaching, and expanding on the knowledge of the Lord, and the people understood the law by the reading. |
"This Day Is Distinctive"
9 And Nehemiah, who is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites who taught the people, said to all the people, This day is holy to Yahweh your Elohim; don’t mourn, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.
9 And Neemias said, and Esdras the priest and scribe, and the Levites, and those who were instructing the people, said to all the people, “It is a dedicated day to our Lord God; don’t mourn, nor weep.” Because all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. | 9 And Neemias said, and Esdras the priest and scribe, and the Levites, and those who were instructing the people, said to all the people, “It is a dedicated day to our Lord God; don’t mourn, nor weep.” Because all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. |
10 Then he said to them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions to them for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord: neither be sorry; for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.
10 And he said to them, “Go, eat fat, and drink sweetness, and send portions to those who don’t have; because the day is dedicated to our Lord. And don’t err, because the Lord is our strength.” | 10 And he said to them, “Go, eat fat, and drink sweetness, and send portions to those who don’t have; because the day is dedicated to our Lord. And don’t err, because the Lord is our strength.” |
11 So the Levites silenced all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be grieved.
11 And the Levites kept silencing all the people, saying, “Keep silent, because the day is dedicated, and don’t be downcast.” | 11 And the Levites kept silencing all the people, saying, “Keep silent, because the day is dedicated, and don’t be downcast.” |
12 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.
12 So all the people departed to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great gladness, because they understood the words that he made known to them. | 12 So all the people departed to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great gladness, because they understood the words that he made known to them. |
Feast of Booths Restored
13 And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, to Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law.
13 And on the second day the chiefs of families, with all the people, and the priests and Levites, gathered together to Esdras the scribe, to attend to all the words of the law. | 13 And on the second day the chiefs of families, with all the people, and the priests and Levites, gathered together to Esdras the scribe, to attend to all the words of the law. |
14 And they found written in the law which Yahweh had commanded by Moses, that the sons of Israēl should dwell in tents in the feast of the seventh month.
14 And they found written in the law which the Lord commanded Mōysē, that the sons of Israēl should dwell in tents during a feast in the seventh month, | 14 And they found written in the law which the Lord commanded Mōysē, that the sons of Israēl should dwell in tents during a feast in the seventh month, |
15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth to the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make tents, as it is written.

15 and that they should sound with trumpets in all their cities, and in Hierousalēm. And Esdras said, “Go out to the mountain, and bring foliage of olive trees, and foliage of cypress wood, and foliage of myrtle, and foliage of palm trees, and foliage of every leafy tree, to make tents, according to what has been written.” | 15 and that they should sound with trumpets in all their cities, and in Hierousalēm. 16 So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves tents, everyone on the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.

17 And all the congregation of those who were come again out of the captivity made tents, and sat under the tents; for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the sons of Israēl hadn’t done so. And there was very great gladness.
17 And all the assembly who had returned from the captivity, made tents, and dwelt in tents; because from the days of Jēsou son of Navē until that day, the sons of Israēl hadn’t done so. And there was great gladness. |
18 Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the manner.
