The People Confess Their Sin
1 Now on the 24th day of this month the sons of Israēl were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth on them.
1 And on the 24th day of this month the sons of Israēl gathered with fasting, and in sackcloths, | 1 And on the 24th day of this month the sons of Israēl gathered with fasting, and in sackcloths, and with ashes on their head. |
2 And the seed of Israēl separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.
2 And the sons of Israēl were separated from every foreign son, and stood and confessed their sins, and the lawlessness of their fathers. | 2 And the sons of Israēl were separated from every foreign son, and stood and confessed their sins, and the lawlessness of their fathers. |
3 And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of Yahweh their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped Yahweh their God.
3 And they stood in their place, and read in the book of the law of the Lord their God; and they confessed to the Lord, and worshipped the Lord their God. | 3 And they stood in their place, and read in the book of the law of the Lord their God; and they confessed to the Lord, and worshipped the Lord their God. |
4 Then stood up on the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice to Yahweh their God.
4 And Jēsous and the sons of Kadmiēl, Sachania the son of Sarabia, sons of Chanani stood at the stairs of the Levites and shouted with a loud voice to the Lord their God. | 4 And Jēsous and the sons of Kadmiēl, Sachania the son of Sarabia, sons of Chanani stood at the stairs of the Levites and shouted with a loud voice to the Lord their God. |
5 Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless Yahweh your Elohim forever and ever; and blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.
5 And the Levites, Jēsous and Kadmiēl, said, “Rise up, bless our Lord God from eternity to eternity; and they will bless your glorious name, and exalt it with every blessing and praise.” | 5 And the Levites, Jēsous and Kadmiēl, said, “Rise up, bless our Lord God from eternity to eternity; and they will bless your glorious name, and exalt it with every blessing and praise.” |
6 You, even you, are Yahweh alone; you have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their army, the earth, and all things that are in it, the seas, and all that is in it, and you preserves them all; and the army of heaven worships you.
6 And Esdras said, “You are he, the only Lord. You made the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, and all their position, the earth, and all things that are in it, the seas, and all things in them; and you invigorate all things, and the armies of heaven are giving worship to you. | 6 And Esdras said, “You are he, the only Lord. You made the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, and all their position, the earth, and all things that are in it, the seas, and all things in them; and you invigorate all things, and the armies of heaven are giving worship to you. |
7 You are Yahweh the God, who chose Abram, and brought him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gave him the name of Abraham;
7 You are the Lord God, you made a choice in Abram, and brought him out of the country of the Chaldeans, and assigned to him a name, Abraham. | 7 You are the Lord God, you made a choice in Abram, and brought him out of the country of the Chaldeans, and assigned to him a name, Abraham. |
8 And found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and have performed your words; for you are righteous.
8 And you found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give to him and to his seed the land of the Chananites, and the Chettites, and Amorrites, and Pherezites, and Jebousites, and Gergesites. And you have established your words, because you are righteous. | 8 And you found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give to him and to his seed the land of the Chananites, and the Chettites, and Amorrites, and Pherezites, and Jebousites, and Gergesites. And you have established your words, because you are righteous. |
9 And saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the Red Sea;
9 And you saw the humiliation of our fathers in Aigypt, and you heard their cry at the Red Sea. | 9 And you saw the humiliation of our fathers in Aigypt, and you heard their cry at the Red Sea. |
10 And showed signs and wonders on Pharoah, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land; for you knew that they dealt proudly against them. So you got a name, as it is this day.
10 And you gave signs in Aigypt, on Pharaō and all his servants, and on all the people of his land; because you knew that they acted arrogantly against them; and you made a name for yourself, as this day. | 10 And you gave signs in Aigypt, on Pharaō and all his servants, and on all the people of his land; because you knew that they acted arrogantly against them; and you made a name for yourself, as this day. |
11 And you divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors you threw into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.
11 And you split apart the sea before them, and they passed through the midst of the sea on dry land; and you threw into the depths those who pursued them, like a stone in the turbulent water. | 11 And you split apart the sea before them, and they passed through the midst of the sea on dry land; and you threw into the depths those who pursued them, like a stone in the turbulent water. |
12 Moreover you led them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way in which they should go.
12 And by day, you led them with a pillar of cloud; and by night, with a pillar of fire, to illuminate the way for them in which they should go in it. | 12 And by day, you led them with a pillar of cloud; and by night, with a pillar of fire, to illuminate the way for them in which they should go in it. |
13 You came down also on mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments.
13 Also you came down on mount Sina, and you spoke to them out of heaven, and gave them straightforward judgments, and laws of truth, ordinances, and good commandments. | 13 Also you came down on mount Sina, and you spoke to them out of heaven, and gave them straightforward judgments, and laws of truth, ordinances, and good commandments. |
14 And made known to them your holy sabbath, and commanded them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses your servant.
14 And you revealed to them your sacred sabbath; you commanded on them commandments, and ordinances, and law, by the hand of your slave Mōysē. | 14 And you revealed to them your sacred sabbath; you commanded on them commandments, and ordinances, and law, by the hand of your slave Mōysē. |
15 And gave them bread from heaven for their hunger, and brought forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promised those that they should go in to possess the land which you had sworn to give them.

15 And you gave them bread from heaven for their famine, and you brought out water for them from a rock for their thirst; and you told them to go in to inherit the land over which you stretched out your hand to give them. | 15 And you gave them bread from heaven for their famine, and you brought out water for them from a rock for their thirst; and you told them to go in to inherit the land over which you stretched out your hand to give them. |
16 But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and didn’t listen to your commandments,

17 And refused to obey, neither were mindful of your wonders that you did among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage; but you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and didn’t forsake them.

17 and they refused to obey, and didn’t remember your wonders which you did with them; and they hardened their neck, and appointed a leader to return into their slavery in Aigypt. But you, Oh God, are merciful and compassionate, patient, and very merciful, and you didn’t forsake them. | 17 and they refused to obey, and didn’t remember your wonders which you did with them; and they hardened their neck, and appointed a leader to return into their slavery in Aigypt. But you, Oh God, are merciful and compassionate, patient, and very merciful, and you didn’t forsake them. |
18 Yes, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is your God that brought you up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;
18 Furthermore, they made a molten bull calf for themselves, and said, ‛ These are the gods that brought us up out of Aigypt. And they performed great provocations. ’ | 18 Furthermore, they made a molten bull calf for themselves, and said, ‛ These are the gods that brought us up out of Aigypt. And they performed great provocations. ’ |
19 Yet you in your manifold mercies didn’t forsake them in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud didn’t depart from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to show them light, and the way in which they should go.
19 And in your great mercies, you didn’t forsake them in the wilderness. You didn’t turn away from them the pillar of the cloud by day to lead them in the way, nor the pillar of fire for them to illuminate the way in which they should go at night. | 19 And in your great mercies, you didn’t forsake them in the wilderness. You didn’t turn away from them the pillar of the cloud by day to lead them in the way, nor the pillar of fire for them to illuminate the way in which they should go at night. |
20 You gave also your good spirit to instruct them, and didn’t withhold your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst.
20 And you gave your good Spirit to instruct them, and you didn’t withhold your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst. | 20 And you gave your good Spirit to instruct them, and you didn’t withhold your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst. |
21 Yes, 40 years you sustained them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes didn’t grow old, and their feet didn’t swell.
21 And you sustained them in the wilderness for 40 years. They didn’t lack anything, their clothes didn’t grow old, and their feet [1] didn’t tear apart. | 21 They didn’t lack anything, their clothes didn’t grow old, and their feet [1] didn’t tear apart. |
22 Moreover you gave them kingdoms and nations, and divided them into corners; so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.
22 And you gave kingdoms to them, and allocated peoples to them; and they took possession of the land of Sēōn king of Esebōn, and the land of Ōg king of Basan. | 22 And you gave kingdoms to them, and allocated peoples to them; and they took possession of the land of Sēōn king of Esebōn, and the land of Ōg king of Basan. |
23 Their children you also multiplied as the stars of heaven, and brought them into the land, concerning which you had promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess.
23 And you multiplied their sons like the stars of the sky, and brought them into the land about which you spoke to their fathers, and they possessed it. | 23 And you multiplied their sons like the stars of the sky, and brought them into the land about which you spoke to their fathers, and they possessed it. |
24 So the children went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.
24 And you wiped out from before them the inhabitants of the land of the Chananites; and into their hands, you gave them and their kings and the peoples of the land, to do to them as it was pleasing before them. | 24 And you wiped out from before them the inhabitants of the land of the Chananites; and into their hands, you gave them and their kings and the peoples of the land, to do to them as it was pleasing before them. |
25 And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells dug, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance; so they ate, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in your great goodness.
25 And they seized lofty cities, and took possesion of houses full of all good things, cisterns having been dug out, vineyards, and olive orchards, and every fruit tree in abundance. They ate, were filled, grew fat, and were nourished by your great goodness. | 25 And they seized lofty cities, and took possesion of houses full of all good things, cisterns having been dug out, vineyards, and olive orchards, and every fruit tree in abundance. They ate, were filled, grew fat, and were nourished by your great goodness. |
26 Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against you, and cast your law behind their backs, and killed your prophets who testified against them to turn them to you, and they wrought great provocations.
26 But they changed, and departed from you, and threw your law behind their body. And they killed your prophets, who warned them to turn them back to you, and they did great provocations. | 26 But they changed, and departed from you, and threw your law behind their body. And they killed your prophets, who warned them to turn them back to you, and they did great provocations. |
27 Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them; and in the time of their trouble, when they cried to you, you heard them from heaven; and according to your manifold mercies you gave them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies.
27 And you gave them into the hand of those who oppressed them, and they oppressed them. And they cried out to you in the time of their oppression, and you heard them from your heaven, and in your great mercies you gave them deliverers, and delivered them from the hand of those who oppressed them. | 27 And you gave them into the hand of those who oppressed them, and they oppressed them. And they cried out to you in the time of their oppression, and you heard them from your heaven, and in your great mercies you gave them deliverers, and delivered them from the hand of those who oppressed them. |
28 But after they had rest, they did evil again before you; therefore you left them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried to you, you heard them from heaven; and many times did you deliver them according to your mercies;

καὶ
ὡς
τὸ
σου·
καὶ
εἰς
καὶ
ἐν
28 But after they rested, they returned to do the evil before you. And you left them in the hands of their enemies, and they ruled over them. And they cried out to you again, and you heard them from heaven, and rescued them by your great mercies. | 28 But after they rested, they returned to do the evil before you. And you left them in the hands of their enemies, and they ruled over them. And they cried out to you again, and you heard them from heaven, and rescued them by your great mercies. |
29 And testified against them, that you might bring them again to your law: yet they dealt proudly, and didn’t listen to your commandments, but sinned against your judgments, (which if a man does, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.
29 And you sternly warned them, to bring them back to your law. And they didn’t listen, but sinned against your commandments and your judgments, when a man does them, he will live by them. And they turned their back, and kept being disobedient and hardened their neck, and didn’t listen. | 29 And you sternly warned them, to bring them back to your law. And they didn’t listen, but sinned against your commandments and your judgments, when a man does them, he will live by them. And they turned their back, and kept being disobedient and hardened their neck, and didn’t listen. |
30 Yet many years did you forbear them, and testified against them by your spirit in your prophets: yet they wouldn’t give ear; therefore you gave them into the hand of the people of the lands.
30 And for many years, you tolerated them and severely warned them by the hand of your prophets. But they didn’t listen, so you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the land. | 30 And for many years, you tolerated them and severely warned them by the hand of your prophets. But they didn’t listen, so you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the land. |
31 Nevertheless for your great mercies’ sake you didn’t utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for you are a gracious and merciful God.
31 And in your many mercies, you didn’t make an end of them, and didn’t forsake them; because you are strong, and merciful, and compassionate. | 31 And in your many mercies, you didn’t make an end of them, and didn’t forsake them; because you are strong, and merciful, and compassionate. |
32 Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keeps covenant and mercy, don’t let all the trouble seem little before you, that has come on us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria to this day.
32 And now, Oh our God, the powerful, the great, the mighty, and the fearsome, keeping your covenant and your mercy, don’t let all the trouble seem little before you which has found us, and our kings, and our rulers, and our priests, and our prophets, and our fathers, and among all your people, from the days of the kings of Assour even until this day. |
33 However you are just in all that is brought on us; for you have done right, but we have done wickedly.
33 And you are righteous in all the things that come on us; because you have dealt faithfully, but we did wrong. | 33 And you are righteous in all the things that come on us; because you have dealt faithfully, but we did wrong. |
34 Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept your law, nor listened to your commandments and your testimonies, with which you testified against them.
34 And our kings, our rulers, our priests, and our fathers haven’t performed your law, and haven’t paid attention to your commandments, and your testimonies which you severely warned them. | 34 And our kings, our rulers, our priests, and our fathers haven’t performed your law, and haven’t paid attention to your commandments, and your testimonies which you severely warned them. |
35 For they haven’t served you in their kingdom, and in your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and fat land which you gave before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.
35 And they were not subject to you in your kingdom and in your great goodness which you gave to them and in the wide and rich land which you presented before them. And they didn’t turn from their evil habits. | 35 And they were not subject to you in your kingdom and in your great goodness which you gave to them and in the wide and rich land which you presented before them. And they didn’t turn from their evil habits. |
36 Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that you gave to our fathers to eat the fruit of it and the good of it, behold, we are servants in it.
36 Behold, we are slaves today, and the land which you gave to our fathers to eat its fruit; | 36 Behold, we are slaves today, and the land which you gave to our fathers to eat its fruit, and its good things, behold we are slaves on it. |
37 And it yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.
37 is abundant for the kings whom you appointed over us because of our sins; and they have authority over our bodies, and over our cattle, as it pleases them, and we are in great affliction.” | 37 and its fruit is abundant for the kings whom you appointed over us because of our sins; and they have authority over our bodies, and over our cattle, as it pleases them, and we are in great affliction.” |
38 [LM 10:1] And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal to it.
38 [LM 10:1] And by all these things, we are making a covenant in faith, and write it, and all our rulers, our Levites, and our priests are sealing it. | 38 [LM 10:1] And by all these things, we are making a covenant in faith, and write it, and all our rulers, our Levites, and our priests are sealing it. |
