Elijah Predicts Drought

1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, As Yahweh Elohim of Israēl lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

1 And Ēliou the prophet, the Thesbitē of Thesbōn of Galaad, said to Achaab, “The Lord God lives, the God of armies, the God of Israēl, before whom I stand, if there is dew and rain these years, except through the word of my mouth.” 1 And Ēliou the prophet, the Thesbitē of Thesbōn of Galaad, said to Achaab, “The Lord God lives, the God of armies, the God of Israēl, before whom I stand, if there is dew and rain these years, except through the word of my mouth.”

2 And the word of Yahweh came to him, saying,

2 And the word of the Lord came to Ēliou, 2 And the word of the Lord came to Ēliou,

3 Get you hence, and turn you eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

3 “Go from here eastward, and hide by the brook of Chorrath, that is before Jordan. 3 “Go from here eastward, and hide by the brook of Chorrath, that is before Jordan.

4 And it shall be, that you shall drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.

4 And it shall be that you will drink water out of the brook, and I will command the ravens to feed you there.” 4 And it shall be that you will drink water out of the brook, and I will command the ravens to feed you there.”

5 So he went and did according to the word of Yahweh; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

5 And Ēliou did according to the word of the Lord, and he sat by the brook of Chorrath before Jordan. 5 And Ēliou did according to the word of the Lord, and he sat by the brook of Chorrath before Jordan.

6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

6 And the ravens brought bread to him in the morning, and meat in the evening and he drank water out of the brook. 6 And the ravens brought bread to him in the morning, and meat in the evening and he drank water out of the brook.

7 And it happened after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

7 And it happened after some days, the brook dried up, because there was no rain on the ground. 7 And it happened after some days, the brook dried up, because there was no rain on the ground.

8 And the word of Yahweh came to him, saying,

8 And the word of the Lord came to Ēliou, 8 And the word of the Lord came to Ēliou,

9 Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain you.

9 “Arise, and go to Sarepta of the Sidōnians: pay attention! I have commanded a widow woman to feed you there.” 9 “Arise, and go to Sarepta of the Sidōnians: pay attention! I have commanded a widow woman to feed you there.”

10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks; and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, please, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

10 And he arose and went to Sarepta to the gate of the city: and, look! there was a widow woman gathering sticks; and Ēliou shouted after her, and said to her, “Bring me, urgently, a little water in a container and I will drink.” 10 And he arose and went to Sarepta and came to the gate of the city: and, look! there was a widow woman gathering sticks; and Ēliou shouted after her, and said to her, “Bring me, urgently, a little water in a container and I will drink.”

11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, please, a morsel of bread in your hand.

11 And she went to bring it; and Ēliou shouted after her, and said, “Bring me, urgently, a chunk of the bread in your hand.” 11 And she went to bring it; and Ēliou shouted after her, and said, “Bring me, urgently, a chunk of the bread in your hand.”

12 And she said, As Yahweh your Elohim lives, I haven’t a cake, but a handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

12 And the woman said, “The Lord your God lives, if it were my cake, but it is only a handful of meal in the jug, and a little oil in the flask, and, look!, I am gathering two twigs, and I shall go in and make it for myself and my children, and we shall eat and die.” 12 And the woman said, “The Lord your God lives, if it were my cake, but it is only a handful of meal in the jug, and a little oil in the flask, and, look!, I am gathering two twigs, and I shall go in and make it for myself and my children, and we shall eat and die.”

13 And Elijah said to her, Fear not; go and do as you have said. but make me of it a little cake first, and bring it to me, and after make for you and for your son.

13 And Ēliou said to her, “Have courage, go in and do according to your word. but make me a little cake from there first, and bring it out to me, and then you shall make for yourself and your children afterward. 13 And Ēliou said to her, “Have courage, go in and do according to your word. but make me a little cake from there, and bring it out to me first, and then you shall make for yourself and your children afterward.

14 For thus says Yahweh Elohim of Israēl, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that Yahweh sends rain on the earth.

14 For thus says the Lord, The jug of meal won’t subside, and the flask of oil won’t diminish, until the day that the Lord gives rain on the earth.” 14 For thus says the Lord, The jug of meal won’t subside, and the flask of oil won’t diminish, until the day that the Lord gives rain on the earth.”

15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah; and she, and he, and her house, ate many days.

15 And the woman went and did, and she and he, and her children ate. 15 And the woman went and did, and she and he, and her children ate.

16 And the barrel of meal didn’t fail, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of Yahweh, which he spoke by Elijah.

16 And the jug of meal didn’t subside, and the flask of oil didn’t diminish, according to the word of the Lord which he spoke by the hand of Ēliou. 16 And the jug of meal didn’t subside, and the flask of oil didn’t diminish, according to the word of the Lord which he spoke by the hand of Ēliou.

Elijah Raises the Widow’s Son

17 And it happened after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

17 And it happened after these things, the son of the woman the mistress of the house was sick; and his sickness was very severe, until there was no breath left in him. 17 And it happened after these things, the son of the woman the mistress of the house was sick; and his sickness was very severe, until there was no breath left in him.

18 And she said to Elijah, What have I to do with you, Oh you man of God? are you come to me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?

18 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Ἠλίου τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοὶ, ἄνθρωπε τοῦ θεοῦ;
18 καὶ εἶπε πρὸς Ἠλιού· τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοὶ, ἄνθρωπε τοῦ Θεοῦ;
εἰσῆλθες πρός με τοῦ ἀναμνῆσαι ἀδικίας μου καὶ θανατῶσαι τὸν υἱόν μου;
18 And she said to Ēliou, “What am I to you, Oh man of God? You came in to me to bring my injustices to remembrance and to kill my son.” 18 And she said to Ēliou, “What am I to you, Oh man of God? Have you come in to me to bring my injustices to remembrance and to kill my son?”

19 And he said to her, Give me your son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him on his own bed.

19 And Ēliou said to the woman, “Give me your son.” And he took him out of her bosom, and took him up into the upper room in which he himself dwelt there, and laid him on his bed. 19 And Ēliou said to the woman, “Give me your son.” And he took him out of her bosom, and took him up into the upper room in which he himself dwelt there, and laid him on the bed.

20 And he cried to Yahweh, and said, Oh Yahweh my Elohim, have you also brought evil on the widow with whom I stay, by slaying her son?

20 And Ēliou called out, and said, “Alas, Oh Lord, the witness of the widow with whom I stay, you mistreated her by killing her son.” 20 And Ēliou called out, and said, “Alas, Oh Lord, the witness of the widow with whom I stay, you mistreated her by killing her son.”

21 And he stretched himself on the child three times, and cried to Yahweh, and said, Oh Yahweh my Elohim, please, let this child’s soul come into him again.

21 And he breathed on the child three times, and called on the Lord, and said, “Oh Lord my God, now return the soul of this child to him.” 21 And he breathed on the child three times, and called on the Lord, and said, “Oh Lord my God, now return the soul of this child to him.”

22 And Yahweh heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

22 And so it happened, and the child called out, 22 And so it happened, and the child called out,

23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him to his mother; and Elijah said, See, your son lives.

23 and he brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother; and Ēliou said, “See, your son lives.” 23 and he brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother; and Ēliou said, “See, your son lives.”

24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of Yahweh in your mouth is truth.

24 And the woman said to Ēliou, “Look! I know that you are a man of God, and the word of the Lord in your mouth is true.” 24 And the woman said to Ēliou, “Look! I know that you are a man of God, and the word of the Lord in your mouth is true.”
