Capture of the Ark Provokes God
1 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Eben-ezer to Ashdod.
1 And the allophyles took the ark of God and brought it from Abennezer to Azōtus. | 1 And the allophyles took the ark of God and brought it from Abenezer to Azōtus. |
2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagōn, and set it by Dagōn.
2 And the allophyles took the ark of the Lord and brought it into Dagōn’s house and placed it beside Dagōn. | 2 And the allophyles took the ark of the Lord and brought it into Dagōn’s house and placed it beside Dagōn. |
3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the next day, behold, Dagōn was fallen on his face to the earth before the ark of Yahweh. And they took Dagōn, and set him in his place again.

3 And the Azōtians rose early and entered into Dagōn’s house and looked and look! Dagōn fallen on his face before the ark of God. And they raised up Dagōn and put him back in his place. And the hand of the Lord was heavy on the Azōtians, and he tormented them and struck them on their buttocks, Azōtus and its borders. |
4 And when they arose early on the next day morning, behold, Dagōn was fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Yahweh; and the head of Dagōn and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold; only the stump of Dagōn was left to him.
4 And it happened, when they rose early on the next morning, that, look! Dagōn fallen on his face before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and the head of Dagōn and both soles of his hands had been removed, each on the front parts of threshold, and both wrists of his hands fallen in the doorway; only the spine of Dagōn was left. |
5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagōn, nor any that come into Dagōn’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagōn in Ashdod to this day.
5 This is why the priests of Dagōn and anyone who enters into Dagōn’s house don't step on the step of Dagōn’s house in Azōtus to this day, for when they step over, they step over. | 5 This is why the priests of Dagōn and anyone who enters into Dagōn’s house don't step on the step of Dagōn’s house in Azōtus to this day, for when they step over, they step over. |
6 But the hand of Yahweh was heavy on them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts of it.
6 And the hand of the Lord was heavy on Azōtus and brought trouble on them, and it erupted on them into the ships, and in the midst of its country mice grew up, and there was great confusion of death in the city. | 6 And the hand of the Lord was heavy on Azōtus and brought trouble on them, and it erupted on them into the ships, and in the midst of its country mice grew up, and there was great confusion of death in the city. |
7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israēl shall not abide with us; for his hand is sore on us, and on Dagōn our god.
7 And the men of Azōtus saw that it was so, and they say, “The ark of the God of Israēl shall not sit with us, for his hand is harsh on us and on our god Dagōn.” | 7 And the men of Azōtus saw that it was so, and they say, “The ark of the God of Israēl shall not sit with us, for his hand is harsh on us and on our god Dagōn.” |
8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines to them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israēl? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israēl be carried about to Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israēl about to that place.

8 And they sent and gathered together to them the satraps of the allophyles and say, “What should we do with the ark of the God of Israēl?” And the Geththites said, “Let the ark of God come over to us,” and the ark of God came over to Geththa. | 8 And they sent and gathered together to them the satraps of the allophyles and say, “What should we do with the ark of the God of Israēl?” And the Gethites said, “Let the ark of God come over to us,” and the ark of the God of Israēl came over to Geth. |
9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of Yahweh was against the city with a very great destruction; and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
9 And it happened, after it came over, that the hand of the Lord came on the city, a very great disturbance, and smote the men of the city from small to great and smote them on their buttocks, and the Geththites made buttocks for themselves. | 9 And it happened, after it came over, that the hand of the Lord came on the city, a very great disturbance, and smote the men of the city from small to great and smote them on their buttocks, and the Geththites made buttocks for themselves. |
10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it happened, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israēl to us, to slay us and our people.

10 And they sent away the ark of God to Ascalōn, and it happened, when the ark of God entered Ascalōn, that the Ascalōnites shouted, saying, “Why have you brought back to us the ark of the God of Israēl to put us to death and our people?” | 10 And they sent away the ark of God to Ascalōn, and it happened, when the ark of God entered Ascalōn, that the Ascalōnites shouted, saying, “Why have you brought back to us the ark of the God of Israēl to put us to death and our people?” |
11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israēl, and let it go again to his own place, that it doesn’t slay us, and our people; for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
11 And they sent and gathered together the satraps of the allophyles and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israēl, and let it stay in its own place, and it shall not put us and our people to death”; for there was a very heavy confusion of death in the whole city when the ark of the God of Israēl entered there, | 11 And they sent and gathered together the satraps of the allophyles and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israēl, and let it stay in its own place, and it shall not put us and our people to death”; |
12 And the men who didn’t die were smitten with the emerods; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
12 and those who lived and did not die were struck on the buttocks, and the cry of the city went up to the sky. | 12 for there was a very heavy confusion of death in the whole city when the ark of the God of Israēl entered there, and those who lived and did not die were struck on the buttocks, and the cry of the city went up to the sky. |
