Philistines Take the Ark in Victory
1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israēl. Now Israēl went out against the Philistines to battle, and camped beside Eben-ezer; and the Philistines camped in Aphek.

1 And it happened in those days that the allophyles gathered for war against Israēl, and Israēl went out to meet them for war, and they encamped at Abenezer, and the allophyles encamped at Aphek. | 1 And it happened in those days that the allophyles gathered for war against Israēl, and Israēl went out to meet them for war, and they encamped at Abenezer, and the allophyles encamped at Aphek. |
2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israēl; and when they joined battle, Israēl was smitten before the Philistines; and they killed of the army in the field about 4000 men.
2 And the allophyles deployed troops for war against Israēl, and the battle turned and a man of Israēl was defeated before the allophyles, and 4000 men were struck on the field in the battle. | 2 And the allophyles deployed troops for war against Israēl, and the battle turned and a man of Israēl was defeated before the allophyles, and 4000 men were struck on the field in the battle. |
3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israēl said, Why has Yahweh smitten us today before the Philistines? Let’s fetch the ark of the covenant of Yahweh out of Shiloh to us, that, when it comes among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

3 And the people came to the camp, and the elders of Israēl said, “Why has the Lord caused us to fall today before allophyles? Let us take the ark of our God from Sēlōm, and let it go out in our midst, and it will save us out of the hand of our enemies.” | 3 And the people came to the camp, and the elders of Israēl said, “Why has the Lord caused us to fall today before allophyles? Let us take the ark of our God from Sēlōm, and let it go out in our midst, and it will save us out of the hand of our enemies.” |
4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of armies, which dwells between the cherubs; and the two sons of Ēli, Ophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

5 And when the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came into the camp, all Israēl shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.
5 And it happened, when the ark of the Lord came into the camp, all Israēl shouted with a mighty voice, and the land reverberated. | 5 And it happened, when the ark of the Lord came into the camp, all Israēl shouted with a mighty voice, and the land reverberated. |
6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What means the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of Yahweh came into the camp.

7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe to us! for there hasn’t been such a thing before.
7 And the allophyles were afraid and said, “These are the gods that have come to them into the camp; woe to us, Oh Lord! Rescue us today, for nothing like this has happened yesterday or the third day. | 7 And the allophyles were afraid and said, “These are the gods that have come to them into the camp; woe to us, Oh Lord! 8 Woe to us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

9 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, Oh you Philistines, that you do not become servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

10 And the Philistines fought, and Israēl was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent; and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israēl 30,000 footmen.

11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Ēli, Ophni and Phinehas, were slain.

12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth on his head.

13 And when he came, lo, Ēli sat on a seat by the wayside watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

Ēli was sitting on the seat by the gate watching the road, for his heart was distraught concerning the ark of God; and the man came into the city to brought news, and the city shouted out. | 13 And he arrived, and look! Hēli was sitting on the seat by the gate watching the road, for his heart was distraught concerning the ark of God; and the man came into the city to brought news, and the city shouted out. |
14 And when Ēli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What means the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Ēli.

16 And after hurrying, the man came to Ēliand said to him, “I am the one who has come from the camp, and I have fled from the battle today.” And he said, “What thing has happened, child?” | 16 And after hurrying, the man came to Hēli and said to him, “I am the one who has come from the camp, and I have fled from the battle today.” And he said, “What thing has happened, child?” |
17 And the messenger answered and said, Israēl is fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people, and your two sons also, Ophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
17 And the young man answered and said, “A man of Israēl has fled before the allophyles, and there has also been a great slaughter among the people, and both your sons are dead, and the ark of God has been taken.” | 17 And the young man answered and said, “A man of Israēl has fled before the allophyles, and there has also been a great slaughter among the people, and both your sons are dead, and the ark of God has been taken.” |
18 And it happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck broke, and he died; for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israēl 40 years.
18 And it happened, when he mentioned the ark of God, he fell over backward from the seat near the gate, and his back was broken, and he died, for the man was old and heavy, and he had judged Israēl twenty years. | 18 And it happened, when he mentioned the ark of God, he fell over backward from the seat near the gate, and his back was broken, and he died, for the man was old and heavy, and he had judged Israēl twenty years. |
19 And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered; and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came on her.
19 And his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinees, was pregnant to give birth, and she heard the news that the ark of God was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, and she crouched down and gave birth, for her labor pains came on her. | 19 And his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinees, was pregnant to give birth, and she heard the news that the ark of God was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, and she crouched down and gave birth, for her labor pains came on her. |
20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said to her, Fear not; for you have born a son. But she didn’t answer, neither did she regard it.
20 And as she was about to die, the women attending her said to her, “Don't be afraid, for you have given birth to a son,” and she didn't answer, and her heart didn't realize. | 20 And as she was about to die, the women attending her said to her, “Don't be afraid, for you have given birth to a son,” and she didn't answer, and her heart didn't realize. |
21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israēl: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
21 And she named the boy Woe-Barchabōth, because of the ark of God and because of her father-in-law and because of her husband. | 21 And she named the boy Woe Barchabōth, because of the ark of God and because of her father-in-law and because of her husband. |
22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israēl; for the ark of God is taken.
22 And they said, “The glory of Israēl has been exiled, in that the ark of the Lord has been taken.” | 22 And they said, “The glory of Israēl has been exiled, in that the ark of the Lord has been taken.” |
