The Prophetic Call to Samuel

1 And the child Samuel ministered to Yahweh before Ēli. And the word of Yahweh was rare in those days; there was no wide-spread vision.

1 And the child Samouēl was ministering to the Lord before Ēli the priest, and a word of the Lord was valuable in those days; there was no defining vision. 1 And the child Samouēl was ministering to the Lord before Hēli the priest, and a word of the Lord was valuable in those days; there was no defining vision.

2 And it happened at that time, when Ēli was lying down in his place, and his eyes began to grow dim, so that he couldn’t see;

2 And it happened in that day that Ēli was lying down in his place, and his eyes began to be heavy, and he could not see, 2 And it happened in that day that Hēli was lying down in his place, and his eyes began to be heavy, and he could not see,

3 Samuel was also lying down to sleep. Before the lamp of God went out in the temple of Yahweh, where the ark of God was,

3 and it was before the lamp of God was replenished, and Samouēl was lying down in the temple, where the ark of God was, 3 and it was before the lamp of God was replenished, and Samouēl was lying down in the temple, where the ark of God was,

4 That Yahweh called Samuel; and he answered, Here am I.

4 and the Lord called, “Samouēl! Samouēl!” And he said, “Yes, I am here!” 4 and the Lord called, “Samouēl! Samouēl!” And he said, “Yes, I am here!”

5 And he ran to Ēli, and said, Here am I; for you called me. And he said, I didn’t call; lie down again. And he went and lay down.

5 and he ran to Ēli and said, “Yes, I am here, for you have called me,” and he said, “I have not called you; return, lie down.” And he returned and lay down. 5 and he ran to Hēli and said, “Yes, I am here, for you have called me,” and he said, “I have not called you; return, lie down.” And he returned and lay down.

6 And Yahweh called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Ēli, and said, Here am I; for you did call me. And he answered, I didn’t call, my son; lie down again.

6 And the Lord continued and called, “Samouēl! Samouēl!” and he went to Ēli the second time and said, “Yes, I am here, for you have called me,” and he said, “I have not called you; return, lie down.” 6 And the Lord continued and called, “Samouēl! Samouēl!” and he went to Hēli the second time and said, “Yes, I am here, for you have called me,” and he said, “I have not called you; return, lie down.”

7 Now Samuel didn’t yet know Yahweh, neither was the word of Yahweh yet revealed to him.

7 And it was before Samouēl knew God and a word of the Lord had been revealed to him. 7 And it was before Samouēl knew God and a word of the Lord had been revealed to him.

8 And Yahweh called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Ēli, and said, Here am I; for you did call me. And Ēli perceived that Yahweh had called the child.

8 And the Lord continued to call Samouēl for a third time, and he got up and went to Ēli and said, “Yes, I am here, for you have called me.” And Ēli realized that the Lord had called the boy, 8 And the Lord continued to call Samouēl for a third time, and he got up and went to Hēli and said, “Yes, I am here, for you have called me.” And Hēli realized that the Lord had called the boy,

9 Therefore Ēli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and it shall be, if he call you, that you shall say, Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

9 and he said, “Return, lie down, child, and it shall be that if he calls you, then you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, because your slave is listening.’ ” And Samouēl went and lay down in his place. 9 and he said, “Return, lie down, child, and it shall be that if he calls you, then you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, because your slave is listening.’ ” And Samouēl went and lay down in his place.

10 And Yahweh came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for your servant hears.

10 And the Lord came and stood and called him as once and once,[1] and Samouēl said, “Speak, because your slave is listening.” 10 And the Lord came and stood and called him as once and once,[1] and Samouēl said, “Speak, because your slave is listening.”

11 And Yahweh said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israēl, at which both the ears of everyone who hears it shall tingle.

11 And the Lord said to Samouēl, “Look! I perform my words in Israēl so that both ears of everyone who hears will tingle. 11 And the Lord said to Samouēl, “Look! I perform my words in Israēl so that both ears of everyone who hears will tingle.

12 In that day I will perform against Ēli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.

12 On that day I will raise up against Ēli all things that I have spoken concerning his house; I will begin, and I will finish. 12 On that day I will raise up against Hēli all things that I have spoken concerning his house; I will begin, and I will finish.

13 For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

13 And I have told him that I am punishing his house forever, for the iniquities of his sons, because his sons are disparaging God, and he wasn't admonishing them, not even thus. 13 And I have told him that I am punishing his house forever, for the iniquities of his sons, because his sons are disparaging God, and he wasn't admonishing them.

14 And therefore I have sworn to the house of Ēli, that the iniquity of Ēli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering forever.

14 I have sworn to the house of Ēli, ‘The iniquity of Ēli’s house shall never be propitiated by incense or sacrifice forever.’ ” 14 I have sworn to the house of Hēli, ‘The iniquity of Hēli’s house shall neverbe propitiated by incense or sacrifice forever.’ ”

15 And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of Yahweh. And Samuel feared to show Ēli the vision.

15 And Samouēl lay there until morning, and he arose early in the morning and opened the doors of the Lord’s house, and Samouēl was afraid to tell the vision to Ēli. 15 And Samouēl lay there until morning, and he arose early in the morning and opened the doors of the Lord’s house, and Samouēl was afraid to tell the vision to Hēli.

16 Then Ēli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.

16 And Ēli said to Samouēl, “Samouēl, child,” and he said, “Yes, I am here.” 16 And Hēli said to Samouēl, “Samouēl, child,” and he said, “Yes, I am here.”

17 And he said, What is the thing that Yahweh has said to you? Please don’t hide it from me; God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that he said to you.

17 καὶ εἶπεν τί τὸ ῥῆμα τὸ λαληθὲν πρὸς σέ;
17 καὶ εἶπε· τί τὸ ῥῆμα τὸ λαληθὲν πρός σε;
17 And he said, “What was the word that was spoken to you? Please don't hide it from me. May God do thus to you and thus continue, if you hide anything from me of all the words spoken to you in your ears.” 17 And he said, “What was the word that was spoken to you? Please don't hide it from me. May God do thus to you and thus continue, if you hide anything from me of all the words spoken to you in your ears.”

18 And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is Yahweh: let him do what seems him good.

18 And Samouēl reported all the words and didn't hide from him, and Ēli said, “He is the Lord; he will do what is good before him.” 18 And Samouēl reported all the words and didn't hide from him, and Hēli said, “He is the Lord; he will do what is good before him.”

19 And Samuel grew, and Yahweh was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.

19 And Samouēl became great, and the Lord was with him, and none of all his words fell to the ground. 19 And Samouēl became great, and the Lord was with him, and none of all his words fell to the ground.

20 And all Israēl from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of Yahweh.

20 And all Israēl from Dan and as far as Bērsabee knew that Samouēl was faithful as a prophet to the Lord. 20 And all Israēl from Dan and as far as Bērsabee knew that Samouēl was faithful as a prophet to the Lord.

21 And Yahweh appeared again in Shiloh; for Yahweh revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of Yahweh.

21 And the Lord continued to be revealed at Sēlōm, for the Lord had disclosed himself to Samouēl, and from one end of the land and as far as the other, Samouēl was believed to be a prophet of the Lord to all Israēl. And Ēli was a very old man, and his sons kept advancing, and their way was evil before the Lord. 21 And the Lord continued to be revealed at Sēlōm, for the Lord had disclosed himself to Samouēl, and from one end of the land and as far as the other, Samouēl was believed to be a prophet of the Lord to all Israēl. And Hēli was a very old man, and his sons kept advancing, and their way was evil before the Lord.
