Hannah’s Song of Thanksgiving

1 And Hannah prayed, and said, “My heart rejoices in Yahweh, my horn is exalted in Yahweh: my mouth is enlarged over my enemies; because I rejoice in your salvation.

1 And she said, “My heart was made firm in the Lord; my horn was exalted in my God; my mouth was enlarged against enemies; I was glad in your deliverance, 1 “My heart was made firm in the Lord; my horn was exalted in my God; my mouth was enlarged against enemies; I was glad in your deliverance,

2 There is none holy as Yahweh; for there is none besides you; neither is there any rock like our Elohim.

2 because there is none holy like the Lord, and there is none righteous like our God; there is none holy besides you. 2 because there is none holy like the Lord, and there is none righteous like our God; there is none holy besides you.

3 Stop speaking so very proudly; don’t let arrogancy come out of your mouth; for Yahweh is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

3 Don't boast and don't speak lofty things; don't let bragging speech come out of your mouth, because the Lord is a God of knowledge, and a God who prepares his own business. 3 Don't boast and don't speak lofty things; don't let bragging speech come out of your mouth, because the Lord is a God of knowledge, and a God who prepares his own business.

4 The bows of the mighty men are broken, and those who stumbled are girded with strength.

4 The bow of the mighty has weakened, and weak ones have girded themselves with might; 4 The bow of the mighty has weakened, and weak ones have girded themselves with might;

5 Those who were full have hired out themselves for bread. Those who were hungry ceased their hunger so that the barren has given birth to seven; and she who has many children has grown feeble.

5 full of bread they were diminished, and the hungry have forsaken the land, because a barren one has borne seven, and she who is full with children became weak. 5 full of bread they were diminished, and the hungry have forsaken the land, because a barren one has borne seven, and she who is full with children became weak.

6 Yahweh kills, and makes alive: he brings down to the grave, and brings up.

6 The Lord kills and keeps alive; he brings down to Hades and brings up. 6 The Lord kills and keeps alive; he brings down to Hades and brings up.

7 Yahweh makes poor, and makes rich: he brings low, and lifts up.

7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, and he raises up. 7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, and he raises up.

8 He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory; for the pillars of the earth are Yahweh’s, and he has set the world on them.

8 He raises up the needy from the ground and lifts the poor from the manure, to make them sit with the mighty of the peoples, even inheriting a throne of glory for them. 8 He raises up the needy from the ground and lifts the poor from the manure, to make them sit with the mighty of the peoples, even inheriting a throne of glory for them.

9 He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.

9 Granting a prayer to the one who prays, he has even blessed the years of the righteous, because not by strength is a man mighty. 9 Granting a prayer to the one who prays, he has even blessed the years of the righteous, because not by strength is a man mighty.

10 The adversaries of Yahweh shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven he shall thunder on them: Yahweh shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength to his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.”

10 The Lord will make his adversary weak; the Lord is holy. Don't let the clever boast in his cleverness, and don't let the mighty boast in his might, and don't let the wealthy boast in his wealth, but let him who boasts boast in this: to understand and know the Lord and to execute justice and righteousness in the midst of the land. The Lord ascended to the skies and thundered. He will judge extend of the land and gives strength to our kings and will exalt the horn of his anointed.” 10 The Lord will make his adversary weak; the Lord is holy. He will judge extend of the land and gives strength to our kings and will exalt the horn of his anointed.”

11 And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child ministered to Yahweh before Eli the priest.

11 And they left him there before the Lord and departed to Armathaim, and the child was ministering in the presence of the Lord, before Ēli the priest. 11 And they left him there before the Lord and departed to Armathaim, and the child was ministering in the presence of the Lord, before Hēli the priest.

The Sin of Eli’s Sons

12 Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they didn’t know Yahweh.

12 And the sons of Ēli the priest were pestilent sons not knowing the Lord, 12 And the sons of Hēli the priest were pestilent sons, not knowing the Lord. And what was right for the priests from evertibe of the people who sacrificed.

13 And the priests’ custom with the people was, that, when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant came, while the meat was in boiling, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;

13 And what was right for the priests from evertibe of the people who sacrificed. and the priest’s servant would come, while the meat boiled, and a three-pronged meat hook in his hand, 13 and the priest’s servant would come, while the meat boiled, and a three-pronged meat hook in his hand,

14 And he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot. All that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israēlites who came to that place.

14 and he thrust it into the great cauldron or into the copper-kettle or into the earthen-pot; all that came up on the meat hook the priest would take for himself. Accordingly, they would do this to all Israēl who came to sacrifice to the Lord at Sēlōm. 14 and he thrust it into the great cauldron or into the copper-kettle or into the earthen-pot; and all that came up on the meat hook the priest would take for himself. Accordingly, they would do this to all Israēl who came to sacrifice to the Lord at Sēlōm.

15 Also before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat for roasting for the priest; for he won’t have boiled meat from you, but raw.”

15 And before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast, and I will not accept from you boiled meat out of the cauldron.” 15 And before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast, and I will not accept from you boiled meat out of the cauldron.”

16 And if any man said to him, “Don’t let them fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as your soul desires”; then he would answer him, “No; but you shall give it to me now; and if not, I will take it by force.”

16 And the man who was sacrificing kept saying, “Let the fat be burned first as is proper, and take for yourself of all that your soul desires.” And he said, “No, because you shall give it now, otherwise I will take it by force.” 16 And the man who was sacrificing kept saying, “Let the fat be burned first as is proper, and take for yourself of all that your soul desires.” And he said, “No, because you shall give it now, otherwise I will take it by force.”

17 Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before Yahweh; for men abhorred the offering of Yahweh.

17 And the sin of the boys before the Lord was very great, for they were invalidating the offering of the Lord. 17 And the sin of the boys before the Lord was very great, for they were invalidating the offering of the Lord.

Samuel before the Lord as a Boy

18 But Samuel ministered before Yahweh, being a child, girded with a linen ephod.

18 And Samouēl was ministering before the Lord, a boy wearing an ephod cloth. 18 And Samouēl was ministering before the Lord, a boy wearing an ephod cloth.

19 Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

19 And his mother made a small double cloak for him and used to bring it up to him from time to time when she would go up with her husband to offer the sacrifice of the days.[1] 19 And his mother made a small double cloak for him and used to bring it up to him from time to time when she would go up with her husband to offer the sacrifice of the days.[1]

20 And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, “May Yahweh give you children of this woman for the loan which is lent to Yahweh.” And they went to their own home.

20 And Ēli blessed Elkana and his wife, saying, “May the Lord repay you with offspring by this woman in return for the loan that you supplied to the Lord.” And the man returned to his place. 20 And Hēli blessed Elkana and his wife, saying, “May the Lord repay you with offspring by this woman in return for the loan that you supplied to the Lord.” And the man returned to his place.

21 And Yahweh visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before Yahweh.

21 And the Lord took an interest in Anna, and she gave birth further, three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samouēl became great before the Lord. 21 And the Lord visited Anna, and she gave birth yet to three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the Lord.

Eli Rebukes His Sons

22 Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did to all Israēl; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tent of the congregation.

22 And Ēli was a very old man, and he heard what his sons were doing to the sons of Israēl, 22 And Hēli was a very old man, and he heard what his sons were doing to the sons of Israēl,

23 And he said to them, “Why do you such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.

23 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα τί ποιεῖτε κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο, ἐγὼ ἀκούω ἐκ στόματος παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ κυρίου; 23 καὶ εἶπε αὐτοῖς· ἱνατί ποιεῖτε κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο, ὃν ἐγὼ ἀκούω ἐκ στόματος παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ Κυρίου;
23 and he said to them, “Why do you do according to this thing which I hear from the mouth of all the people of the Lord? 23 and he said to them, “Why do you do according to this thing which I hear from the mouth of all the people of the Lord?

24 No, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: you make Yahweh’s people to transgress.

24 No, children, for the report which I hear is not good; don't do so, because the reports that I hear are not good so that people are not subject to God. 24 No, children, for the report which I hear is not good; don't do so, because the reports that I hear are not good so that people are not subject to God.

25 If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him; but if a man sin against Yahweh, who shall entreat for him?” Nevertheless they didn’t listen to the voice of their father, because Yahweh intended to slay them.

25 ἐὰν ἁμαρτάνων ἁμάρτῃ ἀνὴρ εἰς ἄνδρα, καὶ προσεύξονται ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ πρὸς κύριον· καὶ ἐὰν τῷ κυρίῳ ἁμάρτῃ, τίς προσεύξεται ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ;
25 ἐὰν ἁμαρτάνων ἁμάρτῃ ἀνὴρ εἰς ἄνδρα, καὶ προσεύξονται ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ πρὸς Κύριον· καὶ ἐὰν τῷ Κυρίῳ ἁμάρτῃ, τίς προσεύξεται ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ;
25 If in sinning, a man sins against a man, then they shall pray for him to the Lord; but if he sins against the Lord, who shall pray for him?” And they wouldn’t listen to the voice of their father, for the Lord willfully willed to destroy them. 25 If in sinning, a man sins against a man, then they shall pray for him to the Lord; but if he sins against the Lord, who shall pray for him?” And they wouldn’t listen to the voice of their father, for the Lord willfully willed to destroy them.

26 And the child Samuel grew more, and was in favour both with Yahweh, and also with men.

26 And the boy Samouēl kept growing and became great and was in favour both with the Lord and with men. 26 And the boy Samouēl kept growing and became great and was in favour both with the Lord and with men.

27 And there came a man of God to Eli, and said to him, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Did I plainly appear to the house of your father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?

27 And a man of God came to Ēli and said, “This is what the Lord says, ‘When I revealed myself, I revealed myself to your father’s house when they were in Aigypt, slaves to the house of Pharaō, 27 And a man of God came to Hēli and said, “This is what the Lord says, ‘When I revealed myself, I revealed myself to your father’s house when they were in Aigypt, slaves to the house of Pharaō,

28 Didn't I choose him out of all the tribes of Israēl to be my priest, to offer on my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? Didn't I give to the house of your father all the offerings made by fire of the sons of Israēl?

28 and I chose the house of your father out of all the sceptres of Israēl, to serve me as priests and to go up on my altar and to offer incense and to bear an ephod, and I gave to the house of your father all the things of the fire of the sons of Israēl for food, 28 and I chose the house of your father out of all the sceptres of Israēl, to serve me as priests and to go up on my altar and to offer incense and to bear an ephod, and I gave to the house of your father all the things of the fire of the sons of Israēl for food,

29 Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honour your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israēl my people?’

29 καὶ ἵνα τί ἐπέβλεψας ἐπὶ τὸ θυμίαμά μου καὶ εἰς τὴν θυσίαν μου ἀναιδεῖ ὀφθαλμῷ καὶ ἐδόξασας τοὺς υἱούς σου ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ ἐνευλογεῖσθαι ἀπαρχῆς πάσης θυσίας Ἰσραὴλ ἔμπροσθέν μου; 29 ἱνατί ἐπέβλεψας ἐπὶ τὸ θυμίαμά μου καὶ εἰς τὴν θυσίαν μου ἀναιδεῖ ὀφθαλμῷ καὶ ἐδόξασας τοὺς υἱούς σου ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ ἐνευλογεῖσθαι ἀπαρχῆς πάσης θυσίας τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἔμπροσθέν μου;
29 and why did you look on my incense and my sacrifice with an unrestrained eye and honored your sons above me, to bless themselves with the first fruit of every offering of Israēl before me?’ 29 and why did you look on my incense and my sacrifice with an unrestrained eye and honored your sons above me, to bless themselves with the first fruit of every offering of Israēl before me?’

30 Therefore Yahweh Elohim of Israēl says, ‘I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever’; but now Yahweh says, ‘Be it far from me; for those who honour me I will honour, and they who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

30 Therefore this is what the Lord the God of Israēl said, ‘I said, Your house and your father’s house shall go in and out before me forever,’ but now, says the Lord: ‘Far be it from me, for I will only honour those who honour me, and he who despises me shall be dishonoured. 30 Therefore this is what the Lord the God of Israēl said, ‘I said, Your house and your father’s house shall go in and out before me forever,’ but now, says the Lord: ‘Far be it from me, for I will only honour those who honour me, and he who despises me shall be dishonoured.

31 Behold, the days come, that I will cut off your arm, and the arm of your father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in your house.

31 Look! days are coming, and I will destroy your offspring and the offspring of your father’s house, 31 Look! days are coming, and I will destroy your offspring and the offspring of your father’s house,

32 And you shall see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israēl; and there shall not be an old man in your house forever.

32 and no elderly of yours will be in my house all the days, 32 and no elderly of yours will be in my house all the days,

33 And the man of yours, whom I shall not cut off from my altar, shall be to consume your eyes, and to grieve your heart; and all the increase of your house shall die in the flower of their age.

33 and a man I will not destroy for you from my altar so that his eyes may fail and his soul may flow away, but every one that remains of your house— they will fall by the sword of men. 33 and a man I will not destroy for you from my altar so that his eyes may fail and his soul may flow away, but every one that remains of your house— they will fall by the sword of men.

34 And this shall be a sign to you, that shall come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.

34 And this is the sign for you that will come on these two sons of yours, Ophni and Phinees; both shall die on one day. 34 And this is the sign for you that will come on these two sons of yours, Ophni and Phinees; both shall die on one day.

35 And I will raise up a faithful priest for me, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind; and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before my anointed forever.

35 And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do all that is in my heart and that is in my soul; and for him, I will build a faithful house, and he shall go about before my anointed one all the days. 35 And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do all that is in my heart and that is in my soul; and for him, I will build a faithful house, and he shall go about before my anointed one all the days.

36 And it will happen, that everyone who is left in your house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, “Put me, please, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.” ’ ”

36 And it shall be; he who remains in your house shall come to worship to him for a silver obole,[2] saying, Throw me aside in one of your priestly places to eat bread.” 36 And it shall be; he who remains in your house shall come to worship to him for a silver obole,[2] saying, Throw me aside in one of your priestly places to eat bread.”
