Elkanah and His Wives
1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite.
1 There was a man of Armathaim Sipha, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkana, a son of Jeremeēl the son of Ēlias the son of Thoke, in Nasib Ephraim. | 1 There was a man of Armathaim Sipha, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Helkana, a son of Hieremeēl the son of Ēlias the son of Thoke, in Nasib Ephraim. |
2 And he had two wives. The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Anna, and the name of the second Fennana. And Fennana had children, but Anna had no child. | 2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Anna, and the name of the second Fennana. And Fennana had children, but Anna had no child. |
3 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice to the Yahweh of armies in Shiloh. And the two sons of Ēli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of Yahweh, were there.
3 And the man used to go up from days to days from his city, from Armathaim, to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord God Sabaoth at Sēlō, and there Ēli and his two sons, Ophni and Phinees, were priests of the Lord. | 3 And the man used to go up from days to days from his city, from Armathaim, to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord God Sabaoth at Sēlō, and there Hēli and his two sons, Ophni and Phinees, were priests of the Lord. |
4 And when the time for Elkanah to offer, he gave portions to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters.
4 And it happened on a day and Elkana sacrificed and gave portions to his wife Fennana and to her sons and to her daughters; | 4 And it happened on a day and Helkana sacrificed and gave portions to his wife Fennana and to her sons; |
5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah; but Yahweh had shut up her womb.
5 and to Anna he gave one portion, because she didn't have a child; however, Elkana loved Anna more than this one, and the Lord had closed the area of her womb. | 5 and to Anna he gave one portion, because she didn't have a child; however, Helkana loved Anna more than this one, and the Lord had closed the area of her womb. |
6 And also her rival provoked her greatly, to discourage her, because Yahweh had shut up her womb.
6 Because the Lord did not give her a child according to her affliction and according to the discouragement of her affliction, she was also becoming discouraged because of this, that the Lord had closed the area of her womb so as not to give her a child. | 6 Because the Lord did not give her a child according to her affliction and according to the discouragement of her affliction, she was also becoming discouraged because of this, that the Lord had closed the area of her womb so as not to give her a child. |
7 And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of Yahweh, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and didn’t eat.
7 Thus she used to do year by year, when she would go up to the house of the Lord, and she would be discouraged and would weep and not eat. | 7 Thus she used to do year by year, when she would go up to the house of the Lord, and she would be discouraged and would weep and not eat. |
8 Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why don’t you eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
8

8 And her husband Elkana said to her, “Anna,” and she said to him, “Here I am, sir.” And he said to her, “What is with you that you are weeping? And why don't you eat? And why does your heart smite you? Am I not good to you beyond ten children?” | 8 And her husband Helkana said to her, “Anna,” and she said to him, “Here I am, sir.” And he said to her, “What is with you that you are weeping? And why don't you eat? And why does your heart smite you? Am I not good to you beyond ten children?” |
9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh. Now Ēli the priest sat on a seat by a post of the temple of Yahweh.
9 And after they had eaten at Sēlō, Anna rose and stood before the Lord, and Ēli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the door frame of the Lord’s temple. | 9 And after they had eaten at Sēlō, Anna rose and stood before the Lord, and Hēli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the door frame of the Lord’s temple. |
10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Yahweh, and wept greatly.
10 And she was deeply distressed in soul and prayed to the Lord, and weeping she wept | 10 And she was deeply distressed in soul and prayed to the Lord, and weeping she wept |
11 And she vowed a vow, and said, “Oh Yahweh of armies, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your handmaid, and remember me, and not forget your handmaid, but will give to your handmaid a man child, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head.”
11 and vowed a vow to the Lord, saying: “Adōnai, Lord, Elōai, Sabaōth, when looking you will look on the humiliation of your slave and remember me and give to your slave an offspring of men, and I will give him as one devoted before you until the day of his death, and wine and intoxicant he shall not drink, and no iron shall come on his head.” | 11 and vowed a vow to the Lord, saying: “Adōnai, Lord, Elōai, Sabaōth, when looking you will look on the humiliation of your slave and remember me and give to your slave an offspring of men, and I will give him as one devoted before you until the day of his death, and wine and intoxicant he shall not drink, and no iron shall come on his head.” |
12 And it happened, as she continued praying before Yahweh, that Ēli observed her mouth.
12 And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Ēli the priest noticed her mouth, | 12 And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Hēli the priest noticed her mouth, |
13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice wasn’t heard; therefore Ēli thought she had been drinking.
13 and she was speaking in her heart, and her lips kept moving, and her voice was not heard, and Ēli reckoned her as a drunken woman. | 13 and she was speaking in her heart, and her lips kept moving, and her voice was not heard, and Hēli reckoned her as a drunken woman. |
14 And Ēli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you.”

14 And the servant of Ēli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine, and go out from the presence of the Lord.” | 14 And the servant of Hēli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine, and go out from the presence of the Lord.” |
15 And Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor beer, but have poured out my soul before Yahweh.
15 And Anna answered and said, “No, sir; I am a woman for whom this is a hard day; I have not drunk wine and intoxicant, and I am pouring out my soul before the Lord; | 15 And Anna answered and said, “No, sir; I am a woman for whom this is a hard day; I have not drunk wine and intoxicant, and I am pouring out my soul before the Lord; |
16 Don’t consider that your handmaid is a worthless daughter. For out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken until now.”
16 do not consider your slave as a pestilent daughter, because I have been greatly extending my mumblings until now.” | 16 do not consider your slave as a pestilent daughter, because I have been greatly extending my mumblings until now.” |
17 Then Ēli answered and said, “Go in peace; and may the God of Israēl grant you your petition that you have asked of him.”
17 And Ēli answered and said to her, “Go in peace; may the God of Israēl grant you your every request which you have requested of him.” | 17 And Hēli answered and said to her, “Go in peace; may the God of Israēl grant you your every request which you have requested of him.” |
18 And she said, “Let your handmaid find favour in your sight.” So the woman went her way, and ate, and her countenance was no longer sad.

18 And she said, “Your slave has found favour in your eyes.” And the woman went on her way and entered her lodgings and ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. | 18 And she said, “Your slave has found favour in your eyes.” And the woman went on her way and entered her lodgings and ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. |
Samuel Is Born to Hannah
19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before Yahweh, and returned, and came to their home in Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Yahweh remembered her.

19 And they rose early in the morning and worshipped the Lord and went their way. And Elkana entered into his home at Armathaim, and he knew his wife Anna, and the Lord remembered her, | 19 And they rose early in the morning and worshipped the Lord and went their way. And Helkana entered into his home at Armathaim, and he knew his wife Anna, and the Lord remembered her, |
20 Therefore it happened, when the time came about after Hannah had conceived, that she gave birth to a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked him of Yahweh.”
20 and she conceived. And it happened at the season of days[1] that she gave birth to a son, and she called his name Samouēl, and she said, “Because I have requested him of the Lord God Sabaoth.” | 20 and she conceived. And it happened at the season of days[1] that she gave birth to a son, and she called his name Samouēl, and she said, “Because I have requested him of the Lord God Sabaoth.” |
21 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to Yahweh the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
21 And the man Elkana and all his household went up to offer in Sēlōm the sacrifice of the days and his vows and all the tithes of his land, | 21 And the man Helkana and all his household went up to offer in Sēlōm the sacrifice of the days and his vows and all the tithes of his land, |
22 But Hannah didn’t go up; for she said to her husband, “I won’t go up until the child is weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and there abide forever.”
22 and Anna did not go up with him, because she said to her husband, “Until the boy goes up when I shall wean it, and it will appear to the face of the Lord and stay there forever.” | 22 and Anna did not go up with him, because she said to her husband, “Until the boy goes up when I shall wean it, and it will appear to the face of the Lord and stay there forever.” |
23 And Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems good to you. Stay until you have weaned him; only may Yahweh establish his word.” So the woman stayed, and nursed her son until she weaned him.
