Help Not in Egypt but in God
1 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not to the Holy One of Israēl, neither seek Yahweh!
1 Alas, those who go down to Aigypt for help, who trust in horses and in chariots, for they are many, and in horses–a great multitude–but didn’t trust in the Holy One of Israēl and didn’t seek God. | 1 Alas, those who go down to Aigypt for help, who trust in horses and in chariots, for they are many, and in horses–a great multitude–but didn’t trust in the Holy One of Israēl and didn’t seek the Lord. |
2 Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and won’t call back his words; but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of those who work iniquity.
2 And he, being wise, brought evils on them; his word won’t be invalidated. And he will rise against the houses of evil men and against their vain hope, | 2 And he, being wise, brought evils on them; his word won’t be invalidated. And he will rise against the houses of evil men and against their vain hope, |
3 Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When Yahweh shall stretch out his hand, both he who helps shall fall, and he who is helped shall fall down, and they all shall fail together.
3 an Aigypt, a man and not God– the flesh of horses, and there is no help. But the Lord will lay his hand on them, and those who help will grow tired, and they will all perish together. | 3 an Aigypt, a man and not God– the flesh of horses, and there is no help. But the Lord will lay his hand on them, and those who help will grow tired, and they will all perish together. |
4 For thus has Yahweh spoken to me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he won’t be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them; so shall Yahweh of armies come down to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill of it.
4 Because thus the Lord said to me, in the manner that a lion or a cub might roar over the prey that he has captured and might cry out over it until the mountains are filled with his voice–and they were defeated, and were terrified at the greatness of his wrath–so the Lord Sabaōth will go down, to march against Mount Siōn and against its mountains. |
5 As birds flying, so will Yahweh of armies defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.
5 Like flying birds, so the Lord will shield Jerousalēm; he will rescue and preserve and save it. | 5 Like flying birds, so the Lord will shield Jerousalēm; he will rescue and preserve and save it. |
6
Turn to him from whom the sons of Israēl have deeply revolted.
6 Turn, you who plan a deep and lawless plan, | 6 Turn, you who plan a deep and lawless plan, |
7 For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made to you for a sin.
7 because on that day, men shall disown their handcrafts of silver and gold, which their hands have made. | 7 because on that day, men shall disown their handcrafts of silver and gold, which their hands have made. |
8
Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him; but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be defeated.
8 Then Assour shall fall; not a male’s dagger, nor a man’s dagger, shall devour him, and he won’t flee from before a dagger, but his young men shall be defeated; | 8 Then Assour shall fall; not a male’s dagger, nor a man’s dagger, shall devour him, and he won’t flee from before a dagger, but his young men shall be defeated; |
9 And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign, says Yahweh, whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.

This is what the Lord says. “Blessed is the one who has a offspring in Siōn and relatives in Jerousalēm.” | 9 for they shall be surrounded by a rock, as with a rampart, and they shall be defeated, and the one who flees will be caught.
